The Othmann pick was exactly what Ranger fans have been asking for, for years!

"Go BPA!"
"Don't reach!"
"Don't settle for need"

Othmann is exactly that. BPA.

"Go BPA" - he wasn't
"Don't reach" - he was, albeit not a Tyler Boucher level one.
"Don't settle for need" - if you consider the team "needing" physicality, well, guess what...

I draft, without question, the 4 players drafted after him before I draft Othmann. Arguably the 6 players after him. Unless Othmann fixes his skating mechanics significantly, I'm not sure I see a future long-term NHLer. Certainly not a top 6'er.

Telling people here to learn how to lose like adults is honorable but a lost cause.

"I'm losing faith in Gallant." (Hasn't coached an official game for us yet.)
"Bag skate them until they puke." (Never mind that pesky CBA.)

And people ask me why they never see me around here anymore. :(

If you had a problem with me saying that I feel sorry for you

It takes time for the team to come together and gel under a new coach. Hopefully gallant won’t be so married to the 93-20 and 16-10 duos that he’ll keep them together through massive struggles, but otoh given some time maybe they’ll work out if they play the way he wants them to.

The goaltending will make a big difference at the start of the season. The good news is that Panarin is still Panarin, Fox is still Fox, and plenty of young players have played well—including our 1OA and 2OA. That’s enough firepower to keep us afloat as things settle. If the goalies can hold down a GAA under 4.

I'm not even going to pretend to be annoyed until I see a full lineup and the games count. Even then, it may take a games to get organized with a new coach. I'll expect to see effort and repercussions for lack of effort once the games count.

It will be interesting to see what decisions they make on the defense after the staff has observed the various options in camp and in preseason games.

Lol obviously some have biased against Nils. Nils took a low percentage shot once. Jones did exactly the same thing on the 5 on 3 yet this isn’t mentioned. Nils was great making quick smart passes on the pp up to forwards so zone entries were mostly smooth. This was second game on North American ice. I guess he needs to score a couple goals for you to be satisfied? As others said his plus minus was ZERO in 2 games where the team lost 5-0 and 7-1!! He also played over 20 minutes per game. That is actually pretty tough to do. Also made a nice pass to Mika for the assist. Once Nils gets comfortable he is going to be a stud.

Jones low percentage shot was with like 6 seconds left on the powerplay. At that time it is more acceptable since the PP is basically over anyway. Do it earlier and you cause problems.

Anyway, I didn't say he looked bad. I said I thought he was bad on the powerplay. Not to mention that issue is a coaching thing. Coaches need to tell the dmen those shots are unacceptable. Nils shot is particularly worse than Jones considering he was on with PP1 (i.e. Mika an elite PP scorer) whereas Jones was on with nobody near as good so his shot relative to the rest of the PP unit was better.

Isnt that exactly what he's already acknowledged that he's working on?
If he fixes his skating mechanics he's potentially a steal at that spot.

Come on. But just looking at their team on paper compared to ours we our levels above them.
Their forwards are still young, but Smith, Severson, Subban, Hamilton, and Graves are a very good defensive group. If Hughes, Hischier, Boqvist, and Bratt take the next steps, it could be a pretty good team.

I'm hopeful Miller can turn it around but i really don't see him and Trouba as a fit, they are both gamblers, we need a steady guy with them

How bad was it?

Can we stop pretending now? That a lot of these players will ever sniff the NHL roster? Is it mandated by the league or something?

It's a new coach, new system... build some chemistry and repetitions in pre season. It is pre-season, but it's been slop.

We literally have a runner up MVP and a f***ing Norris trophy winner on the team. That’s not even adding to a #1 and #2 OA picks and one of the better D prospects in the world with Lundy. On top of that a 1C who is capable of 40 goals.

It's absurd how bad the defense was last night. They couldn't dump the puck down the ice well enough to play for Tom Renney let alone start the transition. Trouba is good in his zone when he has a partner that can wheel and deal like Jones or Lundkvist. Trouba is good when he's just defending. Imagine a Ryan McDonagh without legs or hands. Miller can't do much of anything right now. He's laboring to keep up. The game is going too fast for him. He has the reach, the size, and the tools but the speed and the reads of the game are beating him down right now. Size doesn't matter if you don't use your body or if the play is going by you while you're just jabbing at it. He needs time in the AHL more than any other player. Drury and Gallant needs to be a good partnership that can evaluate and make the right roster decisions constantly. You have a Gauthier showing life and hungry to make an NHL career for himself and he deserves a spot on opening night even though it'll be tough to sit a guy like Blais or Reeves. You have a Miller who had been touted so much and played as a regular last season but he needs to start over in the AHL for half a season and be the first call up if there's an injury after 12-14 games. This is the first sample of how well Gallant can adapt and make roster changes.

I know but we are slow and we made panic moves. I’m not saying the Devils are better now, but I’ll revisit in 1-2 years. I also think we overrate our prospects and underrate other teams’ prospects.
