Exactly! All for giving local talent a chance and before he got with the Oilers he coached in Spruce Grove and for the Oil Kings but its hard to say he made any impact beyond being a nice guy or something (whatever he brings to the table) but the fact that he has been around for so long and that players like Nuge have gone through so many coaches due to dumb GMs not addressing the key issues on the team for the 19th year in the row but getting bandaids (Ekholm for defense and we got extra "offense" in Arvy and J Skinner but look how much that helps) and hoping the win loss ratio isn't so crap by the middle of November or "well we had to let the coach go because idk what his problem was he should have made this team amazing, we made the finals you know?".I am in no way defending Dustin Schwartz. He is an abysmal failure as a goalie coach with the Oilers. As for being a pathetic human being, I don’t think that’s the case but I won’t even get involved in that discussion with you.
But, you do not have to have had an NHL career to even remotely qualify you to be a successful goalie coach. Mitch Korn, the Allaire brothers all parlayed a keen sense of how to use a combination of the team’s and the goalie’s strengths/weaknesses; knowledge of solid position fundamentals to develop a number of quality players at the position.
The problem with Schwartz is his CV indicates he can’t do this - multiple management structures where he has failed with the same middling results, a number of goalies he’s worked with and the same middling results.
This failure is on management to not assess the outputs of the coach and act accordingly. Who knows, maybe under a different coach Stu looks, plays and has different results. (I’m stretching there but trying to find a positive).
Doesn't cover up the fact that we have used up the talents of D Schwartz and we could have hired anyone else that is excited for a job in the NHL but this guy has been signed here longer than some Oilers draftees careers have lasted for (rip Poolparty and Yamamoto and more).
