Amazing this management group just watched this season waste away without making a clear and obvious coaching change 10+ games ago

At least Dorion and DJ will be gone next year, and we can get another high draft pick

Coaching is definitely a problem. But it's not the only problem.

Dump and chase, you need the players playing hard and aggressive. Dog on a bone mentality. I don't see that on the ice. We have no swagger or hustle at all.

We need guys out there to start banging bodies again and move their feet.

Somehow these expected goals and high-danger shot rates always suggest we’re better than our record.

It seems to me that we don’t pounce on rebounds or deflect shots as much. Do we just not have a plan to crowd the crease when we get these shots?

God damn take a look at Jersey.

I'm not seeing that at all.

What I am seeing is guys running around chasing random opponents in their own end. Why do I regularly see wingers in their offside corners in the defensive zone?

I am also seeing lots of powerplays where the only plan is to setup one timers from the dots like Norris scored a ton of last season.

Assen na yo!

This has always been clear.

We have the talent, the ability and even mainly the personnel. The coaching is garbage.

Changing the coach alone may even give us .600 record rest of the season. Even with Hamonic playing top 4. The more we wait, the worst it'll get and this season will be wasted.

Likely already wasted. Will be fully confirmed by December's end.

Ya that’s been the narrative though, are stats show we should be higher, partly due to 1 goal losses, and not getting the timely goals would be a couple of reasons, obviously others.
Timely defending has been the teams biggest issue. Undisciplined plays, careless turnovers. Been the teams biggest Achilles heal and I think when those mistakes are made over and over again that's reflected on the coach.

What is RT, the yellow square?

Most teams in the top right are good. The exceptions are Ottawa and the Rangers who are 9th in the eastern conference.

I was thinking it might be PIT. At least Pittsburgh has a "T".
It's definitely Pens, the kerning in whatever typeface they used is messed up, look at FLa for example, the F and L are attached but it doesn't look as weird because it doesn't create a letter that already exists.

below the average is putting it lightly

They are bottom 2 with Det
Since when, this year, since last year, all time, a little context.
Agree with you, when your a rebuilding team , you will be below the 20% average.

DJ is 7-90-10 when trailing after two periods

take that in
Not a particularly good stat to analyze for a team that was bottoming out for draft picks. I mean, what else would you expect from a team that had that many bottom of the standings finishes?

What stats WOULD be good ones to analyze to evaluate DJ Smith as a coach?

As nearly as I can tell, any stat or argument put forth is always countered with "they were in the midst of a tear it down rebuild ... of course <whatever stat> looks bad"

Even if we all agreed he was doing a shit job as a coach this year, lording that stat over him like we didn't have one of the worst rosters for 5 years running is beyond ridiculous. Why is it so hard to understand that both things can be true at the same time?

I agree that it's not a good stat to use to evaluate him, for a number of reasons. So I am not "lording it over him".

But I don't know what would be a good stat. Which is my question.

I see your point, but what that stat says that the team kinda gives up if they are losing. This is partly on the shoulders of the coach. My expectations are that the stat should be better. Not amazing, But not abysmal as it is now.

For the me that stat the damns DJ is the defensive record. There is absolutely no improvement in his tenure.
