Toffoli and Dadonov were the same year, but the point is we aren't doing what we did when the guys you listed walked away as UFA.

The doom and gloom is understandable given the years of rebuilding, and it's certainly possible this season's collapse gives Zub and DeBrincat cold feet, but comparing what we did from 2017-2019 to what we will do now is ignoring some pretty significant context.
We weren't doing these things, no. They say they want to win now, and the trade shows that.

They are still in 31st place, and are 3.5 months away from a deadline, and a decision that needs to be made.

I'd wager we start to hear about Zub being mentioned in trade talk within a matter of weeks., or that the team has made offers and are still trying to sign him, same as every other year

Should open the polling again and see if results are static or if it changes.

82.4% wanted a change as of Nov 6. Hasn't looked good since then.

Damn dreger saying sense is change I coming but a couple wins or win streak could change things.
Pretty info-less really.

- Dorion can get more time to preach patience if they can get some wins soon (incredible….)

- Said goaltending hasn’t been very good

- Team needs to improve at both D and team D

- Sense is there is significant changes possibly coming

- Need to be careful firing Smith because he’s well liked…

That’s all I took out of it on a quick listen in my office, to be fair wasn’t paying compete attention, definitely missed a bit.

That’s the gist. Interesting to hear coaching change is likely. And likely soon if thing don’t turn around

End of day this is hockey insider. Very rarely are they saying groundbreaking things it’s as vanilla as it gets. Always has been

Im baffled by the entire Zub situation really.

Perhaps his agent had told him to wait for FA and cash in huge.
I mean, if nothing else the longer this season goes sideways defensively for us the more leverage he gains. He doesn't need to wait till UFA, but he's going to get his best offer from us at the deadline unless JBD and/or Thomson take off.

I want DJ replaced, but I can't see us doing anything but naming Capuano as an interim coach at least until a sale is agreed to in principle

Zub isn’t deaf either, he heard Dorion say that Zub’s 2 year deal correlates with JBD and Thomson stepping into the top 4.

“Dorion said he talked about multiple scenarios with Zub’s agent. The club wanted to go two years with Zub because they want to make room for Jacob Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thomson plus the Senators have No. 5 pick Jake Sanderson coming out of the University of North Dakota after next season.”

Don’t think Ottawa will be in a position to offer Zub his “best offer” at the trade deadline, as the sale of the franchise would more than likely impact the Ability of the GM to sign such a contract…… IF by “ best offer” you’re max dollar and 8 years.

not sure Ottawa would want to sign Zub, who will be 28 at the beginning of next season to 8 years…… so IF his agent has advised him to go to July 1st, to get the “best offer” I would tend to agree with him.

I don't expect anyone to offer Zub 7 or 8 years, by his best offer I only mean the best offer he'd get from us, he can then decide if he'd rather go to UFA, or stick around.

FIRE DJ SMITH RN!!!!!!!!!!! Your team is ruining my man Brinksy's career :(

In a what world plug like Austin Watson gets more 5 on 5 ice time what a young star player like Alex DeBrincat?
Not to mention Brassard, Motte and Joseph, all 4 got more ice time what DeBrincat.

In 60 minutes of ice hockey he gives under 9 minutes of 5 on 5 ice hockey to your best player...
No wonder he can't score, he isn't playing... he is not just some PP specialist for crying out loud!!!!!

FIRE THAT MORON DENIS JOSEPH SMITH RIGHT F NOW!!!

FYI last time Hawks played against Ducks; DeBrincat scored 1+1
and had 19 and change 5 on 5 minutes..... total about 22 minutes
Hawks won that game 4-2.

I just don't see the point in firing DJ at this point. Not with the ownership change looming overhead.

I actually hope that ownership puts a hold on making any major changes to the staff or roster, and we just let things run thier course this season.

Maybe Dorion and DJ pull a rabbit out their hats and save the season (and possibly their careers). Doubtful, but knowing they are both 100% gone unless the team massively overachieves for the rest of the season - lts good enough for me to let them have their final stand together.

We already lost all hope this season, all hype is cold and dead. And we can't get any more disappointed as fans. If we were in last place right now I can't say I would be any less optimistic than being in second last place.

So its only positives from here on out for us to look forward to. Either we see a miracle run of sorts, or we get a great pick in stacked draft + a brand new GM and coaching staff. probably high profile people that our previous owner was not able to entice.

These are two exciting scenarios and we already know how to take a punch, so what the hell is one more as far as I'm concerned. I finally feel like see can see an end to humiliation though one way or another. It stops after this season.

Thanks for the clarification….. the “best offer” he’ll get from Ottawa, will be less than what he’ll get as an UFA, as factors such as state/provincial/federal taxes will be factored in, if his agent is any good.

This is Dreger’s schtick, really. Says a bunch of things that are obvious to any outside observer, hints that insiders might be telling him something but prefaces it with “There is a sense that… “, concludes with a caution about what might happen if the team does or not do something.

Never any actual info, just talk.

never heard someone say so much while also saying so little. kind of impressive the verbal diarrhea he can spout, yet keeps being invited back as an 'insider'.

lol neither guy is in a position to be taking Zub's spot.

I don’t think I want a coach that is liked.

Respected maybe, even a little feared.

Anyway, maybe I’m too old school for the league these days.

Oh obviously not. JBD should be on the 3rd pair for the foreseeable future and Thomson in the AHL.

Dorion knows this, he does know hockey, but the fact that the above quote was said at all is mind numbingly stupid.

Whichever way you look at it (Zub would only sign to UFA/Team only wanted him to bridge JBD and Thomson/Pushing the can down the road with a prayer) the 2 year signing was pretty dumb.

I remember saying at the time, “good to get him under contract, we’ll sign him later”. That doesn’t look like a wise opinion to hold.

Oh I’m with you there. Have had coaches I loved, and coaches I wanted to get to love me.

The coaches I wanted to get to love me were undoubtedly better coaches.

This post is ok. But as a veteran, we need you to set the tone and the pace. Try to do better every post. I'm talking about attention-to-detail, like tidying up dangling participles. Otherwise, your insight and passion show up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Don't let me down.
