The truth is we made an error in giving DJ a shot with a better roster. It may not have been fair to DJ, but he should have been let go at the end of his contract instead of given a three year extension. This season could have started with a fresh voice, someone who's a known commodity, but instead we gave DJ a chance and while I get it's not entirely his fault, he hasn't inspired confidence either.
Dorion should be held accountable for that too.

What is/was your solution.
I was pushing hard for the sens to add a center such as Eichel or a lower profile center and starting Pinto lower or in the AHL. Been pushing to add good defensemen for years now. I was happy with Giroux cause it adds faceoff support. Happy with the Cat. Should have kept brown. Going into a season with such young centres is always a risk

I would still go hard after CHychrun without giving up a 1st this year. JBD, Greig, Thomson should all be on the table imo

I think that it is inevitable that he gets fired after this road trip. Problem is, how do you sign somone like Julien, when new ownership will be coming in. They will most likley clean house.

Would someone like Julien come in like Marty St. Louis did and just coach the rest of the season? He is still under contract so he won't do that. Or will he? I guess if he is scouting then he must be off and free to sign wherever? It could give Julien the chance to show he can still coach, so he may jump at the chance ( or be pateitn for the inevitable firings that are coming in the NHL). Julien needs his own staff too, I would imagine .

It is very hard to do a coaching change outside of Capuano or Mann with ownership up in the air

I don't think it would be crazy to sign Julien for this year and next. That way even if new management immediately cuts him loose, he still gets paid for next year. New management might be OK with an established guy like CJ for a year, as well.

Perhaps, though we have better callup options on the wing than we do at center in Sokolov, Greig, and Crookshank, and center is a more important position to have filled with someone qualified for the role.
I’m not sure Sokolov or Crookshank are better options than Brassard to be honest. I would call up Greig, we could play him every 2nd Tuesday around his constant injuries, the kid has played 90 games including playoffs and WJC since the start of the pandemic. I think we should sell high on him.

You can’t just add all the expensive players, there is a budget and a salary cap.

Adding Eichel would have cost a Tuch equivalent like Batherson and probably Stutzle or Sanderson. Does that make us better, maybe but probably not. It also doesn’t mitigate losing Norris.

Everyone is loyal and thinks it's tough and brave until the bill comes due and someone has to pay for all the failures, then we'll see Dorion blame everything on DJ and praise himself for supporting him too much.
News articles are saying that the new owners will likely be announced by end of Jan or Feb.
I think we're stuck with both Dorion and DJ until then. If I was buying the team, I would want to clean house and not have to pay for the interim GM and interim's coach salaries as well.

Eichel would have been an excellent addition as he is the straw that stirs the drink. A top D would also be high on the must do list.

Instead we got no D and a small winger. (EDIT: He did acquire Hamonic. :). )

The GM is responsible for the roster and failed.

Ironically, not firing DJ at least a week ago is probably what will ultimately get Dorion himself fired.

The season will be fully lost once this road trip is over, and that's when our idiot in chief will finally do what needed to be done ages ago.
Dorion has done a lot more wrong than not firing DJ.

How does DJ Smith's contract work exactly? The third year of his extension [the 24-25 season] was reported to be a team option. If he's fired, does the organization still retain the right to decline that option when the time comes?

That would be an interesting wrinkle. At that point you're really only on the hook for next season, likely at a very low number relative to modern NHL coach salaries.

Would only be next year. Would be the same as declining an option. Only the first 2 seasons were signed and guaranteed

I meant better call up options than our center call up options. As to whether Brassard is a better winger than our call up options that's certainly debatable.

The big advantage in my mind of Giroux as our 2nd line center is simply that it gives us an experienced top 6 center that is still top six material.

Plus the other coaches you fired. DJ likely makes 1 and change million per year.
Who knows, maybe they choose Bowness as GM.
