Surnames are translated pretty much as correctly as you can, but there's some fun and creativity with first names as there are no direct translations. Translator was probably just looking for similar sounding first names.

This makes sense to me, especially given how varied spellings and alterations of given names can be - in any language.

Moreover, the first names do have their own background and etymology and in many cases come from the Biblical names through heavy mangling, but it would be just pedantic if you were to insist someone being Nicodemus Ridge instead of somewhat more obvious Timothy.

Timmy Ridge from Ankankodin Ankat.

Hahaha, why say "people" when you're talking specifically about me?

Anyway, shame that flew so far over my head, haha.

Edit: Must be a bit ornery from other things. Not trying to be a dick.

A guy in the first page was confused too :)

Haha some of these names sound so wonderfully british when translated. Can't even say them without a british accent.

Joseph Midhill and Henry Riverridge payed two quid for a pint and had a jolly good time with Edward Hillpoint.

I want to roadtrip with John Land-Of-Bast, J. R. Skimmedmilk and OJ River.

I'm feeling better about the Pens draft now. You don't **** with a guy named Andy Firelake.

A for effort to OP even if many of the concoctions were off the mark. :D As was noted already, -nen is an Eastern Finnish postfix that could be translated as "of". It is also a diminutive form, so Tikkanen could be either O'Woodpecker or native American-ish Little Woodpecker.

However the Western Finnish equivalent -la definitely stands for "house of". So Rajala is someone who comes from house of Border. Ristolainen in turn is either someone who doesn't know if he's from the east or the west :D or simply "of the house of Risto" (=Christopher).

I must insist he be Jack Boob, the less-well-known Tom Clancy character.
