It got the (Eastern) Finnish lastname -nen ending that could mean it's diminutive form or then it could refer to someone from around 'kapa', like 'jokinen' is someone from around the river (for example people of the Finnish town Seinäjoki prefer to be called 'seinäjokinen'). But we don't know what 'kapa' has maybe once meant as the word is lost to us. Sounds like a sensible Finnish word though.

The utterly foreign baby first name site you posted has absolutely nothing of worth to say concerning the Finnish last name Kapanen. It's not a case of Kelly Taylor / Taylor Swift.

How is that not the case?

For all I know the given meanings and allusions on the site can be a full butt-pull by the folks running it. There's absolutely no references to anything unlike the name sites generally where some kind of origin and etymology for the name is given, with the name's variants in another languages. These folks got numerology and tarot instead; their new age leanings have nothing on the Finns, whose magic is arcane and old age.

Plus there is the matter of '-nen', the last name ending half the Finnish morons have, me included, which to this site seems to be a total non-issue when they take off.

edit: and trying with my own name I get exactly the same long litany as with Kapanen. Convincing.

Surnames are translated pretty much as correctly as you can, but there's some fun and creativity with first names as there are no direct translations. Translator was probably just looking for similar sounding first names.
