Hughes was saying during his press conference that the decision wasn’t his and that he needed to speak with Mesar’s agent.

I saw where Hughes said he wanted him to play in the OHL and that Mesar didn't want to, cause it is 100% up to Hughes once a player signs a contract, you have to play where they say without getting into the legal side of it.

Slovak league would be way better an option than the OHL, there’s a reason the Rangers trusted Sykora to return to Nitra.

don't agree that the Slovak league is better then the OHL for him.

If he really tears up the OHL and Laval sees an injury or two up front do they have the option to call him up midseason

no.

like the play at 11:16, you don't think that had an impact on their decision?

He's not a perfect player and won't be dominating at 18, so mistakes will happen. That's a one-off, not a trend (sample size is too small). It's not like he was making the same mistakes over and over during Habs camp either. Even vets make all kinds of mistakes every game.

He's a smart kid, and he'll learn from his mistakes as he realises what he can do and can't do at this level. I don't disagree that OHL might be best for his development, but I have a problem with writing him off because of his age in favor of AHL "vets" before even giving him a chance. At the Habs' camp, he improved every game and looked better as camp progressed.

I find it quite funny that he had more opportunities in an NHL camp than he did in the AHL. Seems to me that they're more focused on winning with vets/favorite coach pets than developing, which is part of the main mandate of an AHL team.

But that's just me... what do I know, right?

The play is exactly what you don't want to see from him, Hughes said before this game that they wanted him to go to the OHL as he wasn't physically strong enough for the AHL (or to that effect, and I believe it was Hughes although it could have been Houle, it's been a very busy week)

As for his AHL views, you don't think Houle saw him since rookie camp?

I don't know what you know, but in my 20+ years at HF, one thing I learned well is that most posters know a lot less then they think they do, not directed at you just HF in general.

No offense taken. I've been here for 17 years, so I've seen them all and I agree with you about that. I've seen your work on prospects over the years and respect you as a poster.

Yes, Hugues was the one that said that he'd prefer Mesar scoring 80 points in the OHL than scoring 40 in the AHL. My point is that I didn't see him make glaring mistakes over and over from rookie camp, to the 3 NHL preseason games, that lead me to believe that that mistake is systemic and a trend.

Everything that I've seen or heard from Houle points me to a type of coach that plays by the book in terms of thinking and methods. He prefers his "vets" and blue-coller workers. I wasn't surprised at all to hear him say that he has no room for Mesar right at the beginning of Laval's camp... anyway, he's going to the OHL now, and I believe it's all for the best.

he's under contract with us, so it's not like he had much of a choice.
Sounded like he had a full choice between Kitchener and Europe. If he picked Europe, we weren't standing in his way.

Looks like he reluctantly agreed to their path. Hopefully he lights the OHL quickly instead of being visibly annoyed and struggle.

Glad to see that Hughes was able to convince him.

I don't know why you guys feel like he needed convincing to go to the OHL. For one, he's under contract so Montreal gets to decide where he goes. If Mesar preferred to go to Europe, Montreal would have accommodated for sure.

Also, when Mesar was drafted, he was asked about all the possibilities of where he could play (Montreal, Laval, OHL or Europe). He obviously said he'd like to play in Montreal and even in Laval. But he also said he'll go wherever Montreal sends him.

The only thing he said about Europe was that he didn't want to go back to the Slovakian league. That he would rather play in Liiga or SHL. But he never said he'd rather go to Europe instead of the OHL.

It wasn't about mistakes as Hughes said he felt he wasn't physically strong enough for the AHL (I agree) and thus early into his first AHL game he gets muscled off the puck. So yes very very small sample size but seeing how it's exactly what the GM said they were worried about (personally I would not put 18 year olds in the AHL unless they are strong and big like Slaf)

Houle played Ylonen and RHP in the top 6 all last season despite when both were slumping. I have some issues with him but Ylonen is clearly not a blue collar worker or a vet yet I can't complain about how Houle used him. Now Norlinder that was a different story, what the f*** caused him to put Norlinder on the PK and NOT the PP for a guy that's more of a PP specialist just blows my mind. Like what in the actual f*** was he looking at that led him to do that? unless he was told to do that by say MB, since it was before he was fired and I don't know how much or little MB talked to Houle about TOI and usage for prospects.

I don't think Mesar wants to go to the OHL, all he needs to work on is his physicality so it's better for him to develop that aspect against men and if its not going to be in the AHL he's going to go back to europe. I support that.

Well Suzuki had fantastic development years in the OHL and they seem to be at similar places in their post draft year.

I'd like to see him really light it up and get used to the North American ice surface.

He's already in Kitchener...

I can't wait to see what he does in the OHL this year.
What are the odds he gets traded to a contending team by season’s end?

I understand that Kitchener is not exactly competitive.

You're going to play in the OHL buddy, there's no way around it.
