GDT: Feb. 20 • Women's Gold Medal Game • Canada vs. United States • Pt IV

Bottom line is we medaled and got 2nd. Swiss beat Sweden that's another upset.

It looked like much more of a ticky tack make up call than a legitimate slashing call.

I've never seen forwards called for such a weak attempt to dislodge the puck loose in men's hockey but once again I'm not sure of the rules regarding the women's version.

Either way I'm not a fan of such a weak call in OT gold medal games.

I agree with this post.

I feel bad for both teams. The US for losing to Canada again. Canada for getting the gold in a tainted OT. I would rather have seen a clean win either way. Canada did a great job coming back in regulation, but was owned in the OT until the questionable calls began.

This ref should never do any international game again. She managed to ruin the game for both teams!

How can you feel bad for both teams.

Was listening to TSN 690 on drive home and they had Tessa Bonhomme on. She was going on and on about how she knew Canada would come back once they scored the first goal because the American women weren't resilient and couldn't handle adversity and pressure.

All I could think was...... What a ****ing *****

No it didn't. That play was plain and simply not a slash. They even replayed it and it couldn't have been clearer. That wasn't even ticky tack, that was a phantom, and if you don't play for the puck when you are in front of the goalie, you don't deserve to play on a team competing for the gold medal. Canadian fans denying this just goes to show how credible they are on analyzing what happened.

The ref flat out chose to make a phantom call to deny the US a PP so as "not to get involved" and in process, she got more involved. That's why you do not make calls like that.
The puck wasn't in sight at all, she wacked the goalie when she clearly had the puck covered. If you're denying that then you clearly didn't watch the game, or have extremely impaired vision. And if you were watching the game, you would know they got a warning for slashing the goalie at the end of the third. The American player is an idiot because that wack was completely unnecessary and she did it to just be a ****. You clearly don't know the difference between playing for a loose puck and giving the goalie a hack when the puck is covered.

But please, keep whining. I'm sure if you do it enough they'll take back the goal.

This thread is for discussing the Canada/USA Women's Gold Medal game that occurred today (02/20/2014), not the one that occurred 8 years ago nor the events after it. Stay on topic.

#3 was an obvious penalty at the time. Sure, upon further review she may not have hauled her down as obviously as it appeared at first, but if someone has a breakaway and you are behind them and pull them down, you are getting a penalty.

If someone has a breakaway and you are behind them and pull them down, how on earth is that a penalty? By the rule book it's most certainly not a penalty:

In a breakaway situation, when a player in control of the puck outside his own defending zone, with no opponent to pass other than the goalkeeper is fouled from behind, thus preventing a reasonable scoring opportunity, the referee shall award to the non-offending team a penalty shot.

That was clearly a penalty shot, and two minutes for cross-checking was an absolute joke, when the US player's stick didn't even touch Wickenheiser.

I am happy and proud of the Canadian women for getting gold but that last penalty call was brutal. The girl on the Breakaway fell down with no contact and had she not fell the American girl would have caught her anyways......but that blown call led to the GWG and if I were cheering for the Americans I'd be very pissed off.....I thought it was hilarious that Cassy Cambell and the other Canadian announcers were crying foul. " That should have been a penalty shot! bla bla bla!" I saw her get tired and lose an edge, I wouldn't go as far as to say she took a dive but it worked in Canada's favour to say the least......But congradulations to All the Canadian women for working hard and coming back in the game. Poulin was the hero.

There was contact. Knigh'st skate clipped Hayley Wickenheiser back skate which resulted in them both falling. The wrong call was made (it should have been tripping) but the result was the same - a 2 minute penalty.

The refs blew the game. That last penalty cost the Americans the game. American fans have a right to be upset.

That is incorrect. See above.

True, that's pretty torrid. Then again, looking at her, I don't really care

Wow I'm going to miss her on sportscentres panel.

I can safely say I thought there was no way Canada would come back, for the entire third period they pressured, but kept on doing dinky little shots from the outside or across the crease from the wings, it wasn't until the final 5 minutes that they DROVE TOWARDS THE NET (I.E Spooner)

When you trip a player on a breakaway from behind, how is that 2 minutes for tripping? By the rule book it's not two minutes, it's a penalty shot.

Fair enough but from what I understand they did not give her a penalty shot because she did not have full control of the puck at the time of contact.

LOL kinda of a dick thing to say, she ended up being right, but still.

so when you watched the game live, if you did, were you absolutely certain that there was no contact between the players when the play happened live with no benefit of a replay? We watched the replay a couple times to try to determine that. The ref doesn't get the benefit of the replay. Do you know what angle the ref saw the play from?

I know some folks are saying there was no contact on the breakaway penalty and that both players went to the ice independently. Even if that's the case, it hardly matters. The ref is calling the game in real-time so the way the play developed that call is going to be made 100% of the time unless it's very obvious there was no contact (and even on the replays it's not at all obvious).

They didn't give her a penalty shot because they knew how bad the slashing call before was. And the slashing call was a make-up call for the cross-checking call before it, where there was no cross-check. The refereeing in the overtime was so atrocious that they might want to think about having male referees in the next Olympics.

I think LaT is reading too much into what she said.

I disagree.

The slashing call was correct because she and Team USA had been warned.

The penalty shot was not given because she did not have full possession of the puck.

You can believe what you want. I don't want to argue. :)

Yeah, the puck was about 1.5 feet ahead of her, because she put it there knowing full well that the goalie has no chance to get to it before she does. Two more strides and she has it with only the goalie to beat. If that's not a clear-cut breakaway, then I don't know what is.
