Player Discussion Fabian Lysell

On our team Donato would be 3rd in goals behind only Pasta and Marchand. He'd be 3rd in points for us too.

So I do look forward to you defending this point in some reasonable way.

And even though I STILL don't think Donato is spectacular, my point stands. We'd be lucky to see Lysell develop to this level (3rd on our team in scoring). Every single one of us in here right now prays that ends up being his best case. Because his most likely case right now doesn't look amazing.

But if Donato was actually playing for the Bruins this season, he would not have those numbers.

He is a one way player that scores 25-30 points from the bottom six. He is having a hot streak this year on a brutal team, but he really has less value than some two way grinder who gives you 20 points and can PK instead.

Donato is outscoring Taylor Hall and Tyler Bertuzzi at the moment. And he's a better 2-way player than both of them.

That said, I agree that its way too early to project Lysell's career at this point.
I strongly disagree with donato being a better two way player than Taylor hall. Hall is better at every part of the game. Donato is having a career year at 28 and out scoring hall by a couple points. Hall also came back from a bad injury last season. By the end of this season I expect halls numbers to easily pass donato.

Sorry to derail this thread.

I think lysell was literally sent back down because they down want Tom Wilson to obliterate him along the boards.

Lysell will probably see some more games this season. Let’s remain optimistic.

I mentioned last year that odds are Lysell would be Donato if he was lucky. People thought that was outrageous. I'm just saying we'd all happily take the Donato career arc now. That would be beyond what he's trending at presently.
When Donato was Lysell's age he was still in college. Lysell is far beyond what Donato was at the same points in their career arcs.

I'm not remotely suggesting Lysell is lagging Donato, you're the only one infering that.

I'm simply suggesting that most of us NOW would take the Donato career, if it was out there. Because of all the possible outcomes on offer for Lysell, there are some much worse ones looking not entirely impossible for this young man.

Most of us? I don't think we're anywhere close to resigning Lysell to the 'lucky to be Donato at this point' category. The guy is about to turn 22, has been putting up solid offensive numbers in the AHL and has grown his game and his body. Sure, he might be a complete bust, but I don't see how anyone can honestly say that before he's really even had a chance to play in the NHL.

Maybe I'm not expressing this correctly, so I'll try.

if you made a poll thread in here now that said

"Would you be happy if Lysell one day was a 25 goal per season NHL player"

My sense is you'd get at least 80% of the board who would fist pump that.

Donato is probably getting 25g this year.

Are we now saying the same thing?

Yeah, now I get it., The problem I think was the Donato comparison, because he is a not very good one dimensional NHLer, this outlier scoring season notwithstanding. If you had led with just 25 goal scorer I think you would have had everyone pretty much agreeing we'd be happy with that.

But I think if you make a second poll and ask if people would take 30 pt NHL years out of Lysell at this point (aka Freddy output), most ALSO take it.

Would you put Fabian in the top 75 players under the age of 22? Don't think he's in mine. I'm not sure he's in my top 75 FORWARDS under 22.

To me, if he ends up as a 30 point one-way forward, that to me is a basically a bust, and I'd be bummed. Unlike Freddy, he doesn't have size and (alleged) grit and physicality to make a career out of the bottom six.

As for the second part, I don't know where Fabian ranks among all NHLers under 22 because I don't know them all, especially not the ones that aren't etablished NHLers at this point. We should come back to that list in 3-5 years and see what it looks like. I imagine it will be quite different that what it would look like today.

I guess my larger objection is that so many people here are writing the kid off already when there is no real basis for that yet. He is a late first rounder so he should get the benefit of prospects taken at that spot- 3-5 years to grow into an NHLer and perhaps a bit longer to become established regulars. Is it because he opted to come to Providence instead of play in Europe so it feels like he has been in the system long enough he should be more than he is? What if he had played a couple years pro in Sweden? Or had gone to college for a couple of seasons? Would it feel different?

Yeah, he's right where he's supposed to be at age 21. Like someone else mentioned earlier. Marchand played 20 games in the NHL at 21 and didn't have a point. For most CHL drafted players, this is their 2nd year in the AHL, the year they make noise and a case for call ups.

Lysell has done that. He's a point per game AHL'er. He's made a case for himself to be called up, got called up and played a safe smart game where he helped us scored a goal. Check that box.

Honestly, it should have been enough to stick around but I get the Bruins are also managing the toughest part of their schedule and have no room for error. They have a stretch of 19 games, most against contenders, and if they're not in a playoff position a month from now the season is over.

OK.

But Hall has never been considered a good defensive player.

In his career Donato has 211 takeaways with 127 giveaways. Hall 582 takeaways with 726 giveaways.

Lysell was sent down because that was the plan all along no matter what happened.

i think most fans would like to see lysell get an extended look, sink or swim.
but this is also the weekend viewpoint from mark divver, who watches the guy every night.
seems like he either lacks IQ or just wants to do things his way. guess we'll see how that goes.

— Fabian Lysell’s speed was evident on Sunday, as it often is, but you can’t overlook the same mistakes being repeated, game in and game out. The turnovers, the 1 on 3 entries, getting pushed aside by bigger players, too much time on the perimeter instead of inside.

Divver doesn't like this player. Or more specifically, doesn't like this kind of player. Wingers like Lysell don't need to spend their time "inside" - Kyle Connor doesn't. Mat Barzal doesn't. Divver just wants everyone to be like Patrick Brown and he can't help himself - Lysell played really well last weekend.

He's being held to a standard the NHL players aren't even fulfilling on a nightly basis.
"...With Fabian, we certainly like his skill set, but one of the things with him we’ve preached is away from the puck. And when you don’t have the puck, how do you play? Are you outscoring your mistakes is really the question at the end of the day.” - Neely

As much as I like Brazeau, if next year they switched out Braz for Lysell, I'd be fine with it since it helps with the severe lack of team speed on the team.

I am not against moving Brazeau, but let's get a look at Lysell, up here before we award him a roster spot next year.

I don't know. Seems like they made that exact choice with Lohrei last year.... despite being far from a polished player at the American League level.

Pastrnak went through most of those growing pains in the NHL as well. He still gets caught committing awful turnovers, attempting 1 on 3 entries, and can get pushed aside by bigger players. I'd argue him and Marchand are your biggest sinners when it comes to forcing the issue. Obviously that leash is earned, but most offensive players have some level of risk/reward.

This is the player you drafted. If you wanted PJ Axelson, don't draft this player in the first place. Nothing about this player at 17/18 suggested he was going to be a guy that plays in the trenches or has a strong defensive mistake free game.

Done with Brazz, done with Freddy, Done with Coyle, call up the kids, move out these three, try and get some picks or possible prospects, you won`t be able to convince me Lysell couldn`t match Freddy/Brazz heady number of 14 pts and a -12 or 20 pts and -4 respectively.

I still keep Brazeau. Freddy, Coyle, I'll drive from Canada to take 'em to the airport.

But yeah, team needs to get some youth, skill & speed injected into this lineup. Hopefully Don grows a pair and calls up Merk & Lysell.
