I am doing a new Wednesday Mailbag on the blog and taking questions when @Gee Wally asked the following:

I will answer the question in advance because I am sure there are others thinking of the possibility.

I will simply refer you to the NHL/CHL agreement:

Would those restrictions apply to Lysell since he is an import and not previously in the CHL system?

Yes it does. He was assigned to his junior club. He was a CHL player at the start of the NHL season therefore governed by the NHL/CHL Agreement.

Before we knock the NHL/CHL agreement (I'm the first to admit it has it's flaws) the NHL has similar agreements with leagues around the world.

Kind of reminds me of Savard. Great vision, active on skates, can control below the dots and on the sidewall. Smallish but makes plays.
one massive difference is this kid knows where his end of the ice is right now, took Savvy until he got under the wing of Claude to do so:)

Did the LA kings not do that w Brayden Schenn for a couple of games?

And now I feel older for first remembering that and then thinking it was only a couple years ago and it was clearly more than a couple years ago.

It's been done a few times. But never for more than a game or two. The timing for it to happen has to be perfect. So unless the Bruins and Providence are ravaged by injury, why bother?

not advocating one way or the other, old friend. Merely that is has happened.
The why, I think there could be some philosophical reasons to do such. However, plenty of guys in Prov that I would like to see at the moment myself. The bigger question is, if called up, would Bruce even use them? But that would be derailing this thread.

he`d use them, but incorrectly, Claude got hammered here for the same stuff Butch does but gets a free pass on from far too many IMO

Assuming no injuries above what they have now, who are you waiving to call someone up? There's a 23 man roster limit.

As for Lysell, they could only call him up on an emergency basis and only if it doesn't take him out of a Vancouver Giants game.

I want this kid to play nowhere except the WHL this year unless/until the time his Giants are bounced in the playoffs then have him join Providence, let him continue to develop and light it up, he`s in very good coaching hands with the Giants.
You’re being selfish and don’t want to share him with us.;)

This is interesting. Maybe @Saxon Eric can shed some light for me? I guess what doesn't make sense to me is if you are not going for it and are selling off assets, why hold onto your best asset? Wouldn't that be managing your assets properly?

The Giants situation is a bit of a mess. They have dealt lots of picks in the last few years and have a couple good prospects that are going the NCAA route instead. Their bottom line has been hurt by Abbotsford moving into town and using up a lot of the secondary ticket market. They really need the playoff gate, keeping in mind that they also didn't make any money during the covid lock down where BC was pretty stringent.

Thus, they were not buying but were also not full-on selling as they are looking to make the playoffs and make some noise with an upset or two and making some gate $.

For JT Miller I’d agree but I don’t think he’s untouchable. Hertl or Chychrun I’d seriously consider it.

I keep feeling like I’m missing something about including Hertl in this response. He’s likely at his peak now and chances are his production will be generally starting to decline in the coming years. His career high is 74 points 4 seasons ago. As a UFA, his price would surely be very high come summer to sign into upcoming seasons. Trading Lysell would immediately put the Bruins in a position of being basically forced to win a bidding war no matter the prevailing rate.

That kind of risk is worth your probably #1 F prospect? Again, I’m just asking because I feel like I must be missing something or there is another Hertl I don’t know about.

Chychrun on the other hand I totally understand being traded for with the top prospect. He’s a budding star on D and is only 24. Him and Charlie on the team for the foreseeable future is a dream, no matter what they do with the roster in coming years.
