You see us making the playoffs? When? If that day comes soon, ask me this then.

Who knows? Rebuilds aren't linear or have a specified time frame. It isn't unheard of for them to be less than 3 years. Tampa picked Stamkos in 08 and Hedman in 09, and was within a game of the stanley cup finals in 2011.Carolina picked Staal in 2003, and was hoisting a cup in 2006, with a goaltender they picked in the first round the year before no less. The point is, no matter how strong your forward or defense group is by the time you're competitive, you still need someone to tend goal, otherwise you end up like Philadelphia in 2010, a loaded team from top to bottom, but had a Michael Leighton in goal and it ultimately cost them their cup imo.

let's just remember that just because teams are putting players on waivers that a trade is close or could happen. Teams do this every year, they're lining up their contract situation and getting ready for today/tomorrow just in case something happens. Every team will probably put at least 1 or 2 players on waivers.

We will likely send Smith down for AHL depth if we can't move him tomorrow. That won't happen today though (it can't, the waiver period ended at 12 PM today).

Hearing Glencross summoned to #Flames hotel to learn his destination from GM Treliving

Glencross is getting traded. Could be a team that no longer will go for Lupul now :(

not sure how bernier can be what they expected when the team in front of him has obviously not been what they expected

You are branching out all over the place with this one. One Bernier has never led a team into the playoffs or played in one for any significant amount of time. Sure what ifs are great when they all pan out. But you know what they say about what if, or maybes, or could have been, should have been in a hockey discussion…

Considering the career Bernier has had so far, it wouldn't be THAT difficult for Leafs to find an equivalent goaltender. Bernier does well when he faces more shots, but not equally well when the shots total drops. With all due respect, I have a tough time envisioning us winning four playoff series with him in net.

We are not looking at a Lundqvist, or a Rask or a Price here.

Bernier has been solid, but he doesn't "blow you away" so much that you must keep him.

Hopefully the Glencross trade is a domino that results in a Lupul trade to whatever other team could've been pursuing Glencross.

Caps were seriously interested in Lupul, but Glencross is likely going there. It's not Boston or Anaheim, so who else is interested? It would have to be a surprise team. That leaves Boston and Montreal as the other 2 (but once again, there could be a surprise team)... Maybe we see something, and Glencross will likely set the price on Lupul.

This is the logic of Leafs fans.

Bernier struggles after the Christmas break(when he had a .920%) and now we have to trade him...

Bernier plays lights out all seasons and ruins our chances at top 5 pick, now the leafs are terrible...

No winning with the whining.

Keep Bernier, only a dummy would give up on a goalie of his potential after 2 years.

Your viewpoint would be more compelling if you didn't feel the need to disparage others to make it.

If you don't think he's going to reach his potential -- and there are entirely legitimate reasons for believing this -- you may well be able to exploit other GMs' perceptions that he has elite potential and obtain a valuable return.

Bernier is unproven, lacks consistent focus, and could well be past his prime by the time the rebuild is working. If he can net you a lottery first or a solid prospect, it would be well worth trading him.

Buddy, wait till Nylander/whoever we draft this year make a mistake. It'll be very sad to read.

Trading bernier after 2 seasons would be dumb.

He's shown glimpses of his upside, and it just leads me to believe that many Leaf fans on this boards are impatient and not very good evaluators of talent.

Not dumb, depends on what he is looking for contract wise.
If I'm MLSE I'm not about to throw a long term contract at this guy, north of 5 million, which is probably what he is asking for. Smaller bridge type deal to see how he progresses makes a lot more sense. If that's not in the cards, then listening to offers just makes common sense. Unlikely he gets moved now, but if contract negotiations start to go south, can see him being moved at the draft. All it takes is for a few teams to bow out the playoffs due to average goalkeeping and demand will be high.

Pretty sure Glencross is headed to the caps. So at least Boston, Montreal and I think Vancouver are still looking for a top 6 forward. Aside from Cole, not much else out there. I bet interest in Bozak and Lupul picks up especially if there are others still looking for some help in the top 6/9.

Los Angeles, Boston, Montreal and, to a certain extent, Pittsburgh and Vancouver, could all use some extra goal-scoring ability. Florida is also a wildcard. At least thats the impression that I have of those teams.

This is a money and how much do you want to stay in Toronto negotiation move by the TML management simply due to the fact Bernier is a RFA and needs to be resigned and this helps management in negotiations come July. Bernier has to feel the heat now and figure out where he wants to go with this. Trading Bernier would be an awful mistake unless they get something they simply cannot say no too.

Glencross traded to Washington.

No news on for what yet though. Lupul's list of suitors just went down, but his price may be set as soon as the deal comes in. I think Lupul will receive more than Glencross in the right situation, so let's see what happens. Less competition for him now for sure.

It depends. Did we get rid of Kessel/Phaneuf, need to reach the cap floor and bring in a vet with solid work ethic/compete who can play top 6 to take the pressure off the kids and allow them to play lower in the lineup?
This.

I'm not sure what makes players on a bottom feeder so special they can only be moved in an overpayment?

Read that all the time, "over payment."

Seriously, you don't need over payments for anyone, you need fair value.
No but that speaks to volume how much I value him. It would be useless to trade him away for a low value. It's what good mgt does. Maximize your assets so you can get the best return. If we are comfortable at getting fair value every time then this team won't go very far.
Unless of course you don't believe in Bernier.

Numbers don't tell the whole story with goalies. I like him but he lets in a lot of softies

So then how do you propose we judge a goaltender. I don't think it's very fair that you say we should ignore the numbers, yet we should trade him because he allows softies. It's fact vs subjective opinion. Numbers do suggest that he can become a very good goaltender. You can't ignore the potential he has. Either you trade him for the best return or you keep him.

That quote does not say he is being shopped. Read again.

That quote is by Steve Simmonds.

Friedman reported that the Leafs are listening to offers on Bernier.

I think you are missing the point of the Simmons tweet. Leafs Mgt is unsure what Bernier is 2 years into trading for him. Perplexed was the word used. Doesn't sound like he is the goaltender for this team moving fwd. Add this to the trade rumours, and a new contract that apparently his agent said there has been little talk on, it doesn't take a genius to figure where Bernier stands with this team.
