F Rodion Amirov (2020, 15th, TOR) - tragically passed away due to brain tumor 8/14/23

Imo that weight for his height makes him small, Height doesn't always = size. Marner is about 6'0 he is small (175) Amirov weight wise is about the same size as 5'9 Brendan Gallagher.

Edit: I'd also rather have someone shorter and stickier than tall and lanky given the choice aswell based on centre of Gravity and implied muscle mass.
......He's 19 years old.

6'1" 185lb at age 19 is far from small. Your logic is daft.

Nylander at the same age was close to 165lbs and by his early-mid 20's he hit 200lbs at a similar height. Amirov likely rounds out between 190-200lbs at peak physical maturity.

Pretty interesting take.

He is 19, and already bigger than 5+ players on the Habs.

His game is based on skill, so I am as worried about his size as I would be if he played a crash and bang kind of game.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing around 190-195 and being a Malkin kind of frame.

Anyway, tons of skill on this kid, really excited to see how he progresses, I really think there is a gap for prospects with the Leafs, Amirov is a level ahead of the Liljegren/Robertson/Sandin group.

Have you seen the average NHL players body type? They're all pretty lanky for the most part. A 19 year old being 6'1' and 185lbs is more than fine. God forbid he not be physically peaked at 19 years old LMAO. I'm 6'4" and gained 30lbs or so between the time I was 18 and 21 or 22. He'll probably end up 195lbs or so. He is not small.

I put on a ton of weight between 18 and 21, I was just stating at the moment he is fairly small.

He can certainly grow but he may not.

6'1 185 means he is in great shape for a 19 year old. If he can put on another 10 lbs of muscle in the next two years he'll be ideal size

Ah yes cause the Habs have anything to do with what I said aside from a comparison to Gallagher. I just stated he is small atm. That may change it may not. Some player bulk up and it Hurts their game and then they lose weight again. Drouin did this.

If Amirov is small then what is Gallagher?

Unless weight is the only thing that matters to you for considering if someone is "small" or not.

...

I specified in the post you quoted that height doesn't always equal size and that for his height if he is under 195 when he plays in the NHL I'd consider him small given the height to weight ratio.

Still never answered, if Amirov is small then what is Gallagher? or Tyler Johnson?

Weird randomly quoting a post from 4 months ago to go on about how hes small because hes only 185 pounds lol. People had this dude listed at like 165 lbs before the draft. THAT is small imo. Hes clearly been putting on weight since getting drafted.

Gallagher is smaller but also in the same category of small. When two people are the same weight a few inches in height imo doesn't make a big difference. It's why in fighting we go by weight classes not by height.

Being taller can provide an advantage but so can being stocky.

So for a skilled game lanky is probably better for a grindy bulldog game like Gallagher plays stocky is probably better.

So answer to your question again, smaller but the same realm of small.

McDavid is 6'1 193lbs. Same weight as when he was drafted.

Nope, too small.

I didn't notice the post was from 4 months ago, clicked on the thread and it brought me there. Are you telling me you've never done that?

To be fair, there were nutty takes on HFboards about Nylander being too small and they were ri... nvm they were wrong too

Height has dimensions of length, combinations of which are often referred to as size. Weight does not. If you wanted to say he's light for his height, you'd call him skinny or underweight. Hope that helps clarify the meanings of words!

Would I rather a big player who is bad or a "small" player who is good? Hmm I wonder.

The "Small and Skilled" vs "Big and Bad" dichotomy has been a weird Maple Leafs Galaxy Brain talking point over the past few years.

Also entirely non applicable when it comes to Amirov who is merely on the slight end of the spectrum in terms of his frame, but he's 19.

I can't believe that there are still posters that complain about a teenagers weight. Players put on weight and muscle with training and maturity. He's 185 lbs. That isn't even small. If he was 145lbs then I would say he is small. He is 10lbs heavier than Elias Petterson who is an inch taller and 3 yrs older. He seems to be doing just fine. I expect he will be 195-200 by the time he is sniffing the NHL and the kid has a ton of skill.
