F Rodion Amirov (2020, 15th, TOR) - tragically passed away due to brain tumor 8/14/23

Disappointing tourney for him. Not sure if it was the Russian’s system or what but he was noticeable in a bad way..

He is young and will be back. He didn't have a bad tourney but also could have been better in some moments. He still carried play and was excellent 2 way. I still think overall he was one of the top forwards on Russia.

Canada game shouldnt count as they were all thoroughly dominated but I am very happy with his upside.

Lastly. Yes the system was not great for him but I still love this pick.

dude had 6 pts. thats twice as many as the previous #15 pick had last year. Amirov looked good. not many looked good vs canada. easily one of the top 2 forwards on russia
Really? I think he has been poor relative to expectations. I like his speed in transition but decision making is not good right now. Too many low danger shots, too many flubbed passes, not very creative.

Ideally he plays for the Marlies and learns the system and adjusts to North America. I think he can easily be a top line player in the AHL by the end of next season if all goes well.

I have a feeling most prospects in their situation would prefer a 25% chance to play on Matthews/Tavares wing than a 100% chance of playing on a bottom-feeder. You're 1-2 injuries/wingers pricing themselves off the team away from getting the best offensive usage you'd get anywhere in the league other than being the flavor of the month getting a shot with McDavid/Draisaitl. In the meantime you get to take advantage of the most expensive sport science/player development program in the league and get paid to like soup.

He should come over to NA as soon as AHL starts up. Better he plays 20+ minutes a night in a league focusing on his development, with PP and PK time, rather than deal with how the KHL handles ice time for young forwards. For all we know if he signs for 2 more years in the KHL, he can easily drop back to 10 minutes a game if Salavat brings in a vet and it will stunt his offensive growth like it's done for other young russian forwards we've seen come to TOR.
