F Rodion Amirov (2020, 15th, TOR) - tragically passed away due to brain tumor 8/14/23

Most players develop best where they don't have a lot of distractions. Having to deal with a new language, food, culture, etc when he is still a teen trying to improve as a hockey player wouldn't be the right choice for most. Staying in a good league(KHL, SHL) near home is usually for the best, unless there is something amiss in the player/team relationship, or the player is an adventurous spirit.

Agreed and you don't have to look much further than Kirill Kaprizov for that. Three full seasons in the KHL and he's doing well this year in Minny.

He should come over to NA as soon as AHL starts up. Better he plays 20+ minutes a night in a league focusing on his development, with PP and PK time, rather than deal with how the KHL handles ice time for young forwards. For all we know if he signs for 2 more years in the KHL, he can easily drop back to 10 minutes a game if Salavat brings in a vet and it will stunt his offensive growth like it's done for other young russian forwards we've seen come to TOR.

AHL begun few days ago.

ya, but the AHL isn't what it usually is. Rosters are watered down due to the best players being scooped up for the NHL taxi squads. KHL quality is probably up due to all the players going there earlier this season, while the AHL quality is down, for the reasons posted above. Cutting a KHL season short(if this were even possible) to race over to the AHL makes even less sense in a year like this.

We don't know for sure what he and Holloway will turn out to be, but it sure seems that there was some quality players available outside the top 10 in the 2020 draft.

This warms my cockles even to this day.

Not ready for the AHL? Are you dumb?
Why would you want to bring him over to play in the AHL? Let him keep developing where he’s comfortable. The history of Russian players says that you’ll want to keep him there.

The Leafs have arguably the best development staff in the NHL. The quicker he can get here the better, and get working with people like Underhill on his skating and Belfry on his skill. No KHL team has those kinds of resources available to them.

History says it’s best to let him develop in Russia. Better for him to be at home, comfortable, playing at a higher level than in the AHL in a foreign country not understanding the language.

What’s wrong with his skating? He’s one of the best skaters from his draft, if not the best.

His skating is fantastic. Underhill will take it to the next level. Like that poster said, the Leafs have an unreal development program and some of the best skills coaches at their disposal.

Salavat is developing him pretty well, though. He could have an increased role next season, but if he decided to go back to the KHL, I’d like it to be a 1 year deal (max) before he comes to the AHL. His game is already polished and 20min/game with top line deployment + #1PP with a cup of coffee in the NHL in 2022-23 would be ideal.

Not really. The history of a guy like Panarin or Kaprizov shows us that staying in Russia was the correct development path in those cases, but you could point to guys like Kucherov, Svechnikov who came over during the junior careers and that was fine too. Just a case by case situation as well as the ability of the player.

If you took a hard look at the numbers, there’s way more misses when players come over too early. Lots of talented players have their development halted.
