Given who was drafted ahead of him, it seems pretty obvious that Howard fell because of size. Seemed a bit that his game doesn't require size in the way that other offensie players do. He's as good, offensively, without the puck as he is with it. Shifty, sneaky, moves to open areas in good position to shoot. His skill/IQ/motor combo is just better than players drafted around him. I'd be more worried about his intelligence if he didn't show insight on the ice, and he does.

If NYI didn't trade the pick (obviously they did, and I understand the move), I was hoping for a trade down in the 1st to get more picks + draft Howard. I just like his game. Oh well, guess Tampa did too.

He has the kind of game that goes underrated, IMO. It's extremely effective, though.

Not sure why this kid was still available that late.

I'm looking specifically at a handful of picks that I think were reaches. (Before anyone freaks out, I'm saying REACHES, not bad players.)

16. Ostlund
23. Snuggerud
25. Rinzel
27. Bystedt (really?!!!)
29. Lamoreaux

Without a second thought I take Howard over those guys.

Howard could very well be a smaller Matt Boldy at this draft. He's very talented and I don't think there are many better systems for a player like him to come up in than Tampa's. Plus when other GMs saw the Don Johnson drip they knew they had to leave him to Tampa. He went full Florida for the draft.

I don’t think the main reason he fell was size. I think it’s more that he’s not that good, outside of his scoring ability. And the scoring isn’t like Wahlstrom or Holtz level shooting power either. He’s a worse but bigger version of Caufield. He’s a late first round player and that’s where he went.

A TBL fan that is also a well known hip-hop artist took inspiration from Issac Howards’s draft outfit. Pretty cool.

I saw some clips of Howard miked up at a USNDTP practice and he was cracking jokes with everyone. He will be a better hockey player than comedian but for the love of God he was not serious AT ALL at the draft.

So many Karen's on these boards.

Tough team to rack up points on. Noah Cates was 0.65 PPG last year at 22 going on 23 years old and is playing top 6 minutes in the NHL this year (weak roster ofc).

They are obviously a successful college program, but there's a reason not many USNTDP players enroll there.

Low scoring with Duluth is understandable. It's a super defensive team. But Howard is -14. From the outside it just looks like he's having a bad year.

Anyone have examples of success stories of a player switching ncaa programs after a year?

Only ones that come to mind are the ones that have failed.

Jonny never should have gone to NoDak as a true freshman. Wasn't ready.
I always liked him but he had an immaturity to him. Maybe he just bit off more than he could chew too early. I would love to see him turn in a solid pro career, although hopefully not in the Leafs organization.

Headed to Michigan State. Reuniting with his NTDP coach Adam Nightingale. Spartans are building something again. Exciting.
Haha. I nailed it.

Awesome to see, great move.
