Doesn't really matter what we were thinking, really. Sounds like he had a chance to get more on Saturday.

Ok so let him take more from someone else. Off the top of my head he would now be the 2nd most expensive piece in any of the last few cup winners bottom 6s, winners do not spend money and term on vanilla 4th liners.

I like Kampf, but not sure I like the idea of paying him 2.5m.
I assume that means we're not re-signing ROR or getting a 3C then too, since I doubt we'd pay him that much to be our 4C.
I know the UFA center market isn't great, but I would have preferred going out and finding the next Kampf instead of giving Kampf a significant raise.

I'm actually 100% fine with this.

He's excellent defensively, can pk. And is also capable of handing more minutes than most 4Cs. Leafs need more stability in their bottom six too, and this helps

Put differently, I think we tend to undervalue purely defensive guys. If we offered a similar contract to a one way offensive centre who scored like 35 points but terrible defensively most people wouldn't care as much.

A re-signing that's neither great nor terrible. Hope the coaching staff and management generally view him as being more of a 3C though for the time being when taking the contract into consideration.

2.5??????? I was thinking 1.5

Jesus christ.

The guy was getting a raise, and the number was going to start with a 2.

He is a high end 4C, and looking at what Cizikas got as a similar style player (albeit Cizikas was older and received much more term for having a longer run of success), the price is probably "right" for him. He will still be in his prime for the entirety of his deal so it is not like you would expect a late-contract drop off like you would with Jarnkrok potentially.

It is just a matter of whether we should have paid said price or go with that kind of composition. This signals we are probably looking at a fairly competent shutdown line and the other bottom 6 line will likely be cheaper guys with upside or an energy line that probably can't play a lot... So not much different than what we have been getting before. Or he wants to spread the wealth out a little bit rather than just going after ROR and a bunch of league minimums.

Ooh thats not 4th line money. I expected him to get something close to this but not from the Leafs.

This deal might be 500k too much for the upcoming year but years 2,3 and 4 will look good. Glad he’s sticking around, one of the very few pending UFA’s I wouldn’t have minded back.

BTW Holmberg has yet to establish himself as an NHLer. Just pump the brakes ok.

Holmberg looked like an NHLer last year, I'd rather him as 3C over Kampf just due to his offensive ability.

The only good thing about having Kampf as a 4C is when Keefe loads up lines, Kampf will likely be the next guy out to play a no-event shift and just be the shutdown guy so everyone can take a breather, he also PKs.

This is how I'm trying to view it. He was making $1.5M last year, so even if he's overpaid by like $500K now (implying he's worth $2M as a raise was to be expected), it's not the end of the world. 4 years is nice and I can't imagine it would be a super difficult contract to move down the line.

Overpay in both term and AAV. Guy scored 7 goals last year and has 0 sandpaper to his game. I’m sorry but his defensive game isn’t worth that contract alone.

f***ing awful.

Pretty bad signing. I don't see any need to commit that kind of term for a guy who can't give you anything offensively. He just plays a totally bland and boring game where nothing happens, which should never be how you want to play

So we spent the cap increase on a raise for David Kampf lol

I like the player, but this should've been an easy "someone else can pay you that"

I really like Kampf...
But he's not at all what we need as a fourth line center... besides faceoff ability 🙄

Leafs are destined to get punked again in the playoffs 🤜🤕

Very questionable deal by Treliving
again, nothing will change in the playoffs if we hold on to guys like Kampf...

I guess there was no one in UFA that was an upgrade on Kampf as 4th C for less than 2.5 per

What a f**kin' joke world...

Overpaying a bottom 6 player by 750k is not a good start.

This team is going to have most of the same players but be considerably worse this year.
Supposedly he would have been offered 3 million on the open market so hard to say if it is an overpayment
