I was not thinking minutes wise. Question is can he be the guy behind AM and JT with a cheaper #4C? Was definitely impressed with him later in the 2nd round vs Florida but he does not provide enough offence for my liking in the #3C spot.
it really depends on his wingers...
imagine a line of
Tavares - Kampf - Marner
or
Tavares - Kampf - Nylander
they look crazy as hell, but, are they really?

Kampf is a defensive star, and can let the offensive stars cheat on offense a little more

I really doubt even Keefe would be crazy enough to try that, so i'm expecting
Lafferty - Kampf - Jarnkrok

Kampf is a good role player and someone that will be important in a cup run winning big faceoffs, being super reliable defensively, PK'ing and being someone you put out in the last minute to close out a game.

A little overpaid for sure but not something people should be flipping out over.

The more I think about it, the worse this is. Why Kampf? Why now? He's not a core player or even necessarily a guy who's proven to be indispensible. Why this term, why this AAV, why now, before free agency even begins? Don't you want to compare to a)what other teams are offering him, and b)what else you can get for this money? Kampf is a fine player, but nothing about him says "shit, we better sign this guy right now and pay a premium to make sure he never hits the market!!!"

He's a forward who of the full season guys, had the sixth most minutes of any forward. He's an important part of the team, both defensively and on the PK. I wish that every player signed for cheaper, but to lock up an important C, one of the more important positions is critical.

I think Holmberg will take the other C position, while both Lafferty, and if signed Acciari also have utility at that spot. I do hope that we also find a way to sign both Acciari and Schenn.

That would give us three more spots to fill for the forwards, either from internally, or external signings/trades. Basically, we are talking about replacements for Kerfoot, ZAR, RoR and Bunting.

Kerfoot had some useful time with us, but certainly last year wasn't one of those years. Going forward, we need someone with similar upside production potential, but with more jam, hopefully more size, and the ability to play playoff hockey.

Bunting has been great for us, absolutely no complaints, but he earned a bad rep with the refs, and made himself useless as a result.

RoR I just don't think is in the budget, unless I'm surprised.. others have commented about team speed concerns, and they aren't wrong.

ZaR had his moments for sure.. and at minimum, I don't hate him back.

C depth is important... and now we are pretty solid there. Overpay, yes... but it's not a gross overpay, and it's an important position. We'll see how the rest of the roster is filled out before reacting too much.

Weird thread though. Seems like a decade ago that two worse players in Andreas Johnsson and Kk were signed for 3.5x4 and yet there is way more complaining about this move then you saw back when those two were signed. f*** this thread seems to more upset then when Marner signed even. Folks Pretty worked up over a very dependable player in Kampf.

It's very clear that they took a look at the UFA market and what's available, and said... Kampf it is. It was reported he could get 3M with term as a UFA but took the Leafs deal because he wanted to stay.

Now the Leafs can focus on defense and probably adding a Bunting replacement, and in general focus on other parts of the team that needs help.

I don't think this is much of an overpayment if any, and I think Kampf also has more to give. Nice to have a 4C locked up.
it would not even be an issue except we got 4 forwards making 40.5M on CAP .. and we are in for a major increase in AAV on our D over summer .. there is nothing left for 3rd and 4th liners except ELC and rooks from A .. and Kampf does not move da needle

Here’s what you need to know:

• Kampf is coming off an original two-year contract in Toronto during which he solidified himself as a bottom-six defensive option for the Leafs.

• The 28-year-old player all 82 games in each of his two seasons in Toronto and was a first-choice penalty killer.

• Kampf started his career with the Blackhawks before signing with Toronto as a free agent in July 2021.

Why did the Leafs re-sign Kampf?

Kampf’s detail-oriented defensive game doesn’t land on highlight reels very often, but, at least in his first season in Toronto, he was exactly what the Leafs needed. Coach Sheldon Keefe was able to send Kampf out routinely against some of the opposition’s best players and Kampf was still able to produce positive possession metrics at five-on-five. He deserved full marks of value for his $1.5 million cap hit.

Kampf’s game (and possession numbers) slipped at times last season. Nevertheless, the Leafs still clearly are betting on his (generally) reliable play and believe he can fill their fourth-line center role.

Is this a decent value for Kampf?

One way to look at it: by adding approximately $900,000 to his deal, Treliving has essentially committed most of the $1 million raise in the salary cap in 2023-24 to Kampf.
While there is an argument to be made that the Leafs should have seen what other, possibly cheaper options were available in free agency, especially considering Auston Matthews and William Nylander are due for big raises in 2024, the Leafs value what they have in front of them.

Kampf went injury-free during his two regular seasons in Toronto and takes tremendous care of his body. That manifests in the kind of continued strength needed to play in the ugly areas of the ice, all of which may have contributed to the comfort the front office has in the player.

people losing there shit at Kampf's 2.4 is honestly hilarious. I'd take him over Kerfoot at 3.5 any day of the week.
Just because Kerfoots deal is bad doesn’t make paying Kampf 2.4 million any less of an overpayment.
The way that the expensive 4 are paid we have to squeeze every bit of value out of the lower tier players……..not just get ok fair value. That hasn’t cut it the last 7 years and it won’t cut it going forward

NASHVILLE – Brad Treliving has made his first roster decision as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s a safe one.

Treliving inked bottom-six centreman David Kämpf to a four-year extension that carries an average annual value of $2.4 million, as first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Kämpf was one of 10 impending unrestricted free agents on the roster and the first to commit.

The 28-year-old arrived in Toronto as an under-the-radar value pickup by former GM Kyle Dubas and had wrapped a two-year deal at a bargain $1.5-million cap hit.

A coach’s dream, fitness fanatic and respected role player in the Leafs room, Kämpf earned his raise with reliable defensive play, penalty killing, and availability.

He hasn’t missed a single game since joining the Maple Leafs, wins most of his faceoffs (51.5 per cent), and stays out of the penalty box (8 PIM).

While the pivot provides minimal offence (27 points in 2022-23), Kämpf manages to be a plus player despite starting just 81.5 per cent of his shifts in the defensive zone.

While Treliving continues to work away at an extension for his other impending UFA centre, Ryan O’Reilly, locking up Kämpf through 2026-27 gives the Leafs some insurance at the 3C position and alleviates some pressure on prospect Pontus Holmberg (RFA) to make an NHL impact next season.

Yes, the Kämpf deal feels a tad rich and a smidge long for a safe, one-dimensional player. But with the UFA market so thin up the middle, it’s likely he would’ve received a similar offer elsewhere.

900K folks, that is what the raise was. People are freaking out over 900k. If the cap went up 3 million there wouldn't be a peep out of anyone.

If the cap goes up in the next 3 years to what some are reporting to almost 100 mil then are we really worried about the 900k raise Kampf got?
