No, but that may part of the problem.

Nah. It just means the Leafs had the lead a lot and he played the PK a lot and they valued him being part of that. Most good teams have that player play around 15 minutes or so a game.

It depends on what people believe the problem is.
Is it the depth?
Is it the core?
Is it the coach?
None of the above or all of the above.

I don’t think this signing creates a huge problem nor does it correct it at present.

I would say a good PKer for 2.5 on a team that is as front-loaded as this team isn't the best use of cap space. But hey...

Probably not. We'll see how it shapes up over the next week or two and perhaps see if there were better bets for the cap space.

Kampf was 7th in ice time among forwards. That's not a prototypical 4th line center.
I was not thinking minutes wise. Question is can he be the guy behind AM and JT with a cheaper #4C? Was definitely impressed with him later in the 2nd round vs Florida but he does not provide enough offence for my liking in the #3C spot.

Is it a bad thing? I think the Leafs did ok with the lead and their PK was pretty strong since he's been here. He almost took something like 70% of the defensive zone draws for the Leafs.

I agree that you should be able to get these players for cheaper. But my question is... who comes in cheaper and can replace that? I'm looking at the list of centers in UFA and it's... not good. Easier said than done.

If it was up to me, I'd go pure skill on all lines. I don't care if everyone is 5'9" either. But it's not that simple. Kampf brings forechecking and a high motor, and he's pretty good at what he does. I think we're overlooking the good he does and most players of his ilk don't score a ton either.

There are always - always plenty of solid 4th liners on the UFA market - a good GM needs to spot the bargains. Acciari signed for 1.25 last year. Perry league min for the past 3 years. There are always guys out there to be had.

Acciari is just as good defensively and on the draw as Kampf (better in fact), scored twice the goals, and was one of the league leaders in hits...and he'll get similar money to this. And probably not from us.

I think he's decent value

I think he’s a good sell high candidate… 18% shooting last year and has not been an impactful playoff performer, and his role doesn’t seem to fit where the Leafs need to updraft in size and physicality in the middle six

at the end of the day this shouldn't be a contract that kills us. He's about 400-700k overpaid. Which when you look at it that way doesn't sound bad, but on the flip side if you look at it as a 20-35% overpayment it inspires an entirely different narrative. Both ways of looking at it are factual.

This signing is not a good start to the Treiliving era. It is too much money and too much term for David Kampf. I don't hate David as a player. I find him useful, but I genuinely don't understand that AAV and term.

I am going to give Tree the benefit of the doubt here. He's had a ton of shit to tackle in a short period of time. I'm not going to be the guy that just shits on every move he makes just because I believed in Kyle Dubas. That said, I just don't understand this one TBH. Lets hope this is not a sign of what is to come. Overpaying replaceable players is not the way to build any team. Say what you will about our core 4 making too much money, but at the end of the day they produce.

You just cannot give 4 year deals to 4th line players. Makes no sense to me. This is a Matt Martin like deal that we will be looking to pawn off in a couple years time
It's a fair contract.
Just maybe the core is fed up with the endless turnover of players that in the end don't really build"team spirit".

Time for stability.

Tired of the endless recycling of the bottom six.

Jarn is definitely decent value, but if we're hoping to improve on speed and physicality while keeping roster spots open for Knies, Holmberg, Robertson...we're running out of roster spots to do it in.

I like to do a ledger for GM’s, so Keefe, now this over payment. 0-2 Brad.

And anyone saying 500000 too much isn’t a big deal, it is in a cap world, do a couple more of those and that’s a player. Every cent matters, period. And I guess this means RORi is gone and Kampf might actually be in the three hole.
The fact that Treliving is running back the same core 4, a coach who’s outclassed in every NHL playoff series he’s been involved, and now brings back a black hole offensively, makes me wonder what kind of knowledgeable hockey guy Treling really is if he can’t think of better alternatives, at least to the coach and the 4th line C.

Also, if they are as emphatic on not making any drastic changes with the top forwards, what are they going to change?

It seems more likely that it'll be basically the same, just with a few rough boys.

Compared to now paying Kampf 2.4m, he is great value. I can now see Acciari asking for a similar deal.
