So we got Kampf and Jarnkrok in our bottom 6 and Freidge says Tre wants to add "heavier" players in our bottom 6. He's got 4 spots left to add those types of players. Acciari, Reaves, Perry, Watson, Woods ??

Lafferty is in the bottom 6 too.

I can see Robertson there too.

Holmberg probably gets playing time too.

I think Jarnkrok may be a top 6 player.

We likely have 2 spots open in the bottom 6.

Don't hate the player at all - he's very good at what he does. But his is very limited.

I just feel a team cannot commit significant resources on someone who looks to be signed as the #3C, but has zero offensive acumen when the Leafs major issue most of the time is secondary scoring.

What was identified as needs at this past deadline? A #3C (to upgrade on him), a physical, bottom 6 player (which he isn't) and D.

Looks like this might be the blueprint for every trade deadline.
I like what Kampf brings but you 100% nailed it!

I have no probelm with this signing. As long as somehow we can sign Acciari and Schenn

Kampf has a functional role and can go up and down the line up
He's not a great hitter but he's not soft along the boards either

I like the Kampf signing, but this is a good point. He needs to be paired with a puck mover/line driver type to be the most effective.
Yeah ideally you wouldn't want to make a commitment like this to a guy who is so dependent on his linemates, but this could go in very different directions depending on who he plays with. Kampf with guys like Clifford or ZAR versus Kampf with guys like Holmberg or Engvall are very different situations

He didn't this past playoffs. Kampf had more points. But yes I agree, Nick Paul is a better player, but he's paid more and with a lot more term.

I'm not thrilled with the extension. It's just OK. But to be saying this is a horrible extension and to lament as if this is the end of the world is really exaggerating the situation. He's a solid player and you know what you're getting.

It’s not necessarily being “better”, it’s having stand-out skills that the other team has no answer for. If you buffed up all of Kampf’s skills by 15% to the point that he’s equal to Paul on paper, you’d still rather have the fast 6’6 guy over the solid vanilla option.

It’s not so much the money or the player, it’s voluntarily locking ourselves into another 4 years of vanilla play. We can’t lose AND play a boring game, I have no interest in watching Kampf’s solid fundamentals get complimented in the handshake line again.

at the end of the day this shouldn't be a contract that kills us. He's about 400-700k overpaid. Which when you look at it that way doesn't sound bad, but on the flip side if you look at it as a 20-35% overpayment it inspires an entirely different narrative. Both ways of looking at it are factual.

This signing is not a good start to the Treiliving era. It is too much money and too much term for David Kampf. I don't hate David as a player. I find him useful, but I genuinely don't understand that AAV and term.

I am going to give Tree the benefit of the doubt here. He's had a ton of shit to tackle in a short period of time. I'm not going to be the guy that just shits on every move he makes just because I believed in Kyle Dubas. That said, I just don't understand this one TBH. Lets hope this is not a sign of what is to come. Overpaying replaceable players is not the way to build any team. Say what you will about our core 4 making too much money, but at the end of the day they produce.

You just cannot give 4 year deals to 4th line players. Makes no sense to me. This is a Matt Martin like deal that we will be looking to pawn off in a couple years time

Good player. Brutal contract.
If he's a good player how can a 2.4 x 4 year contract be brutal?

It's a very fair deal for both sides in my opinion based on everything Kampf brings to the table.

Was one of the few guys who stepped up in the elimination games against FLA. Probably our best forward in game 5. If he can find that gear more consistently this will be a steal.

Complete bullshit
Why
We dint need more soft players in the bottom six
What a joke of a franchise
Accairi played 11 games in the playoffs and was still one of the top hitters by the end. He had 72 hits in 12 games. That is what you need in the bottom 6
I would have given him 2.5 before kampf
What a joke of a franchise
Keefe aline probably cost us two series with his inability to change what was not working

Kampf is a bit unique here as his average minutes tend to be more than what most 4th liners get. He's almost closer to a 3rd liner when it comes to atoi
I thought his reduced 14:06 TOI in the playoffs indicated they realized they weren't going to get it done with so little scoring but it might have simply been maximizing ROR and even per KD specific direction.

He kind of needs that 3rd line spot to be worth the hit and with 7 goals does he produce enough to be there? He is an offensive black hole and makes his linemates less productive. Leading the 11th best PK in the league is not a real achievement so his value is anchored in his 5 on 5 play. If you score next nothing and still end up on the plus side of the ledger you aren't hurting the club so it doesn't make them less competitive except that 2.5M could maybe have gone towards a player with more tools.

No ROR then but it was never likely. No then to Acciari?

In the traditional leafs way, too much money for too much term and probably gave him a NMC.

Givem some of it, but not the trifecta

Kampf being 7th in ice time among forwards is a bad thing. You want your 3rd line C to be more than a 7 goal scorer.

He's a defensive specialist 4th line C with no offensive acumen. You should be able to pluck those guys in free agency for 1-2m.

Is it a bad thing? I think the Leafs did ok with the lead and their PK was pretty strong since he's been here. He only played from the defensive zone and they did good when he did.

I agree that you should be able to get these players for cheaper. But my question is... who comes in cheaper and can replace that? I'm looking at the list of centers in UFA and it's... not good. Easier said than done.

If it was up to me, I'd go pure skill on all lines. I don't care if everyone is 5'9" either. But it's not that simple. Kampf brings forechecking and a high motor, and he's pretty good at what he does. I think we're overlooking the good he does and most players of his ilk don't score a ton either.

And for the record, again, this deal is just OK. It's not good. It's not terrible either.
