to those of us who stuck by this kid despite the constant bashing/barrage from stat watchers on here - cheers!!

understanding the college game overall, and how his usage and linemates was not indicative of his play and ability was something we kept saying over and over again...but few wanted to listen.

bravo to the Sens for having an actual scouting department that watched this kid play and didn't get caught up in stats as a true freshman.

he has been a gamer for years, a nasty son of a ***** to play against - this kid alone can help save that first round pick heading to Colorado from being a lotto pick!

enjoy him for many many years to come!

I love your enthusiasm and agree on your take he is going to be a very effective player but the bolded portion is not happening specifically because of him. He is benefiting playing with a super star in Stone. Stone is driving that line and him and Duchene along with Chabot are the absolute reason the sens arent a the worst team in the NHL right now.

they are a -2 with him in the lineup and a -11 without him. don't kid yourself for one second if you think this kid isn't "driving" the play there...and I watch most of his games as well, so not just stat watching lol...Chabot has been awesome, Duchene has done well too...it is nice that a number of players are doing well there, but Tkachuk has a lot to do with it as well..

I am not kidding myself I watch every game, yes Brady helps ofcourse as I directly refereed to in my post but if you think he is a better player than Mark Stone right now you clearly cant look at this objectively. Both Tkachuk and Colin White have been terrific and fit very well with Stones play style and in my opinion have been very similar contributors with Stone being the driving force on the line.

eyes see different things. the team looks night and day different with Tkachuk in vs out of the lineup.

I have seen a number of off nights for Duchene and Stone, I have yet to see that with Brady.

I did not say that Brady is the best player on that team, but him being there as a 2018 draft pick is clearly making a big difference for this team and why they WON'T be a lottery pick. It isn't solely on him but the fact that so many people laughed at this pick, laughed at his offensive production only to see his true impact is satisfaction for me and others.

I don't know why you are getting all concerned over someone stating the obvious - this team IS better with Tkachuk in the lineup and what he is doing out there is DRIVING the play...I notice the kid when he doesn't score, he shows up in so many other ways...I cannot say the same for Duchene.

Chabot is a stud, love that kid too. Ottawa has a lot of good kids ready to step in and take roles, embrace it, enjoy it, this team doesn't suck!

Unless you think every line has one and exactly one line-driver, and other players are only supports to that line-driver, it can both be the case that Stone is better than Tkachuk and that Tkachuk isn't just a free-rider on his team giving some support, and that he is an essential part of the team and its success. And I think that is the case. Stone is better than Tkachuk, but the fact that Stone is better than Tkachuk by itself isn't enough to say that Tkachuk isn't an "absolute reason" for what success Ottawa has had, or that Tkachuk in some way isn't contributing significantly on his own aside from Stone.

Apparently my eyes who have no favorite prospect or player on the team I am a sens fan looking at team success is seeing something different than you who clearly has a large affinity for Tkachuk. Not sure what the bolded portion has to do with the current discussion you and I are having.

Duchene is currently 5th in the NHL in scoring Tkachuk while he has played fantastic is not the same contributor as Duchene, Stone and Chabot. Anyone that follows hockey can see this is clear as day. Its also easy too use this metric you are using specifically for Tkachuk as he has missed significant time. If Ottawa doesnt have one of the big three for the same allotted period of time they would be even worse off than without Tkachuk.

Ill repeat myself that does not mean I dont think Tkachuk is contributing, his attitude is contagious and infections, it really does seem to have got Colin White going as well as dragging the guys into the fight. He has been AMAZING and after the big three there is a legitimate argument to be made he is the next most imporant player.

I underestimated just how effective his overall game would be. He's not the most skilled but hes skilled enough and has the willpower to maximize his talents every time he hits the ice.

Tkachuk has already become my favourite sen. However, I still would have given the pick up. :/

Favorite player on the roster a dozen games in the year after he’s drafted but not good enough? Sens most likely draft 4-8 in June, I’d take Brady over that and praying on the lottery

Meh the potential of Hughes and Kaapko and still having the "consolation" prize of a guy like Dach is too much.

I've always seen Tkachuk as more of a Landeskog type, who is great, but if he's the best offensive weapon on your team you're in trouble. I just wanted the Mack and Rantanen types. Players who can challenge for scoring titles. Picking 1-5 that's the type of potential i would go for.

Brady is amazing though.

It's nice to see this. I know it wasn't always fun last year, but you could see the talent whenever you turned on BU and before that in the USNTDP. Like you said mostly stat watchers or the anti-NCAA crowd seemed to be at the heart of that. Brady is a special player, tons of talent, drives play, sound defensively, amazing in tight spaces and a throw back in terms of the ferocity he plays with. Looking forward to watching him for years.

I can only shake my head at anyone who still thinks Ottawa should have given up the pick for a roll of the dice after seeing how amazing Brady is. Its 100% the boat vs mystery box argument from the simpsons, no two ways around it.

Hes a franchise player for a team that needed a facelift. Hes got that magnetic personality that makes people and the cameras want to follow him.

And along with going all out every single shift, he has the skill and the intangibles that could make him one of the most valuable wingers in the league in his prime. You dont have to be a top 10 scorer to be a franchise player imo.

I would also be shocked if he didnt end up being the type of player who's game elevates to another tier in big games and the playoffs. Its a total given if you know Brady.

I hate to toot my own horn, but I stated many times in the 2018 NHL draft thread that if Brady was a center, he would be the #2 prospect in the NHL draft and we would be hearing comparisons to Ryan Getzlaf.

I had people calling me crazy, and saying how they didn’t see it. Stat watchers really suffered a big time L on this one. Just goes to show, stats are not everything when evaluating a prospect.

I was one of the more vocal supporters of Brady here, but I don't think people should be doing a victory lap because they got this one right. One, because it is early, and two, how many threads are people here going to bump which they got wrong. I'm sure not going back to bump my opinions on Sam Bennett (or any other bust/disappointment I liked) or an opposite example like Hischier who I liked, but didn't think he would break 5o points last year.

I think the "victory lap" is more about stat watchers' opinions vs actually watching the skills of a prospect taking into consideration internal and external factors. For me, it is pretty obvious which method is the right one. It just happens that Brady Tkachuk is the perfect example for this.

Bingo and judging a prospect and throwing them under the bus without clearly watching them play

I will happily eat crow on my Nick Ebert posts, Luke Kirwan posts, Shane McColgan posts, Ty Rattie posts, and I am sure countless others...

I will however bathe in the tears of the Tkachuk brothers haters out there, that absolutely tried to call Matthew a player who didn't deserve to be selected where he did, and then Brady too...it was pathetic at best because they hate these kids last name.

I am too lazy to look for pictures of someone bathing in tears, so I will just put this here for the haters...
Happy Thanksgiving!

To be fair, a lot of posters suggesting this were doing it with the caveat that the Senators had the inside track on knowing what their rebuild plans were. Had the Senators decided to trade Stone prior to arbitration, and eventually Duchene as well, it'd be incredibly likely that they'd finish last in the NHL. Take Stone, Duchene, and (now we know) Tkachuk off this team, and it's a last place team.

I liked the Tkachuk pick more for the story and what it represented (because I wasn't watching any of these prospects enough to have an informed opinion on their actual play) but I could see the validity in the Senators giving up the 4th overall pick if they intended to blow things up and ensure that 2019 pick was equally as valuable with upside to be significantly more valuable if they got lucky in the lottery. As we know now, they weren't going that route.

A lot of people on this site owe Brady a big apology LOL (including me who had him 9)

The thing I don’t get, is even if Brady only ended up as a 50-60 point winger in the NHL, he brings so many other things to the table. It’s fun to chase upside and the points but Brady absolutely passed the eye test last season even if his numbers weren’t earth shattering. I’d take a 50-60 point Brady Tkachuk with all the other things he brings to the table, over most players in last years draft.

I’ve said it on here before, that I thought he’d be a top 6 forward and was a top 5 prospect last season. His start to the season hasn’t changed that, the only thing is that maybe he has more upside offensively then I originally thought. I had him pegged as a 50-60 point forward, who would be a pest, a beast physically and just the type of guy you want on your team. Watching him I’d take his game over a 1 dimensional forward who if they aren’t scoring don’t really impact the game. Even on the nights when Brady isn’t contributing on the score sheet, he brings other elements to the game. The Sens got a gamer, I’d kill to have him or his brother on my favourite team. Such fun players to watch.
