Well that's just it. Potential. Maybe no one catches Lafreniere or challenges him for #1. If you had to pick a player you think might have the potential to challenge him, who would that be? You may say , no one will, Lafreniere will double down and show everyone he is still well ahead. Others look at Byfields size and abilities and project him to potentially challenge Lafreniere ...if... Maybe Raymond will set the world on fire in the SHL if he's given the chance and challenge .. its conjecture.

I have no problem with some posters saying there’s potential player X will be better, hell there could be some no name player who dominates this season.

The issue is some posters saying there’s a “good chance” or it’s “likely” Lafrenière doesn’t end up 1st when there’s not a single thing pointing to that right now.

Barring injury or Lafreniere disappointing this season he's going #1 in the 2020 draft. The guy's going to be a superstar. Best forward prospect since Mcdavid.

Matthews and Eichel were better prospects. Hughes and Kakko arguably were better

Matthews/Eichel/Hughes only because they are Center's. I think Lafreniere is a more hyped prospect than Kakko when you account for the only reason that Kakko was as hyped as he was is because of Finnish media. He's gonna be a good player, but Dach is likely going to have a better career.

Well, that right there is such a gem. Highlighting it for anyone who might have missed it otherwise.

Matthews and Eichel were actually pretty clearly above Lafreniere as prospects in my opinion. Like I said an argument could be made for Hughes and Kakko, maybe its just recency bias but I think they are all in that tier.

What is your first comment based on? I sure don’t agree. Lafreniere is everything Eichel was, in particular, with superior grit, two-way play, and playmaking ability more than making up for the skating discrepancy.

Not sure anyone has dominated like Lafreniere in their Draft - 1 season like Lafreniere though. His numbers aren’t as eye popping but he just seems like he’s one of those players who always makes a good to great play. Time will tell but he should have a monster season IMO

Gonna be interesting to see where he ends up at the draft next year.

Part of me almost wishes the Rangers didn't go out and get Panarin & Trouba so we could tank another year and go all in for 1st overall next season.

I’ll take Panarin and Trouba over a last place finish and 18% chance at Lafreniere. We will probably end up with a ~5% chance anyways.

Last season Kings absolutely tanked and slid to 5th overall - just goes to show that those balls don't drop for everyone...

(sorry, that sounded a bit old Grandpa style. Edit: not sorry!)

this is bad logic.

Lafren makes any team better no matter their wing depth.

You are not partaking in logic. You want us to evaluate whether Lafreniere makes the team better. Obviously he would, but we aren't given 5 top 10 picks by the league. We have to pick and choose where we try to improve the team with a first round pick. As currently constructed, it makes absolutely no sense to add another winger. We have too many of them.

thats how nad decisions at the draft are made. you take the player who you think will end up being the best player.

Just because you have a Malkin and Crosby shouldn't mean you should pass up on a Matthews for a Laine. That's the bad logic bit. Take the player you think is going to be better. If that's Byfield great.

If you believe there's virtually no gap, you draft for need. Every team does. It's a complete myth that amateur pundits on this website like to state that you need to draft the best player available. NHL teams don't operate that way, unless they believe there's a difference in caliber.

Given that Lafreniere is not a tier beyond the other players, it would make no sense to draft Lafreniere in the top few picks for the Rangers as the team is currently constructed.
