But at least Fantilli is lucky…The real shame is for the habs
It looks like, it is more and more a battle of two giants about draft pick Nr. 1.
It’s cool to see his face light up when asked about the Chicago Steel in an interview before the game.
Lofty lofty praise for the organization. Says they are the Making huge waves with prepping players for a pro level mindset and their influence in Ontario is growing. Really says it is a first class organization.
NHL teams really take notice from players from the program.

Agreed. To add to the Ontario thing, there's been a few connections between the Steel and the Leafs. Toronto hired their former GM Ryan Hardy to run their minor league operations. Then the Steel hired Leafs scout Noelle Needham as an AGM. Toronto has drafted a few prospects from the team like Moldenhauer, Abruzzese, Joe Miller. Definitely seems like they have a good relationship.
London has has trouble recruiting American talent in recent years. Not the powerhouse they once were. The Steel are to Canadian players what the London Knights were to American players.
I think his skating may even be better. Beniers has the better motor but Fantilli is an absolute horse when he gets moving. How does Fantilli compare to Beniers in his draft year? Worse skating and two way play, but better offense?
Really...wow. I thought Benier's skating was (and is), a strength.I think his skating may even be better. Beniers has the better motor but Fantilli is an absolute horse when he gets moving.
Both can be true. Beniers is a good skater but Fantilli is just slightly better in that department.Really...wow. I thought Benier's skating was (and is), a strength.
I think that’s probably fair. The other aspect to take into consideration is that Fantilli’s physical tools / athleticism are better than Beniers. I think he’s only scratching the surface in that department, too.How does Fantilli compare to Beniers in his draft year? Worse skating and two way play, but better offense?
I love Beniers. Not glamorous, but he's a player you win with. If Fantilli is better, he's going to be quite the player. Close to Mathews/Draisaitl level, maybe?I think that’s probably fair. Similar, if players could choose where to go in the OHL, most would go to London due to their recent history and location. Steel have a similar pull. Ontario kids until recently haven't been able to force their way to London as much as they had previously. I've always heard it was pretty much the only OHL team Jack Hughes would have reported to. Marner and Domi used Michigan to force their way there. Out of the big 4 North American sports, junior hockey is the only sport where kids can't choose their path at 16. They can do things to influence it, but they can't outright force it. For late Birthdays like Fantilli and Owen Power who likely will play their draft season as a university age kid, it makes a lot of sense to choose your USHL team and then choose your NCAA team over being drafted to somewhere with a questionable development track record in an area you don't want to be. Whereas Knights have always feasted on likely USNTDP kids who will slip in the draft due to that, although the OHL's newish policy of teams getting first round picks a spot lower for kids who don't report (Like Mississauga with Jack Hughes) has somewhat limited that practice. The Steel are to Canadian players what the London Knights were to American players.
Covid has had some ramifications. But, they pretty easily pulled off a shocker with Stranges who at the time was viewed as a top kid for the USNTDP. And, the above rule changes have made it more difficult for kids to force their way to spots.London has has trouble recruiting American talent in recent years. Not the powerhouse they once were.
I understand the analogy and completely agree.

he was viewed as top 5 for his age group and the top American outside of Kleven. Can't say with 100% certainty but people I trust in the industry told me he chose London over USNTDP. And, he's also the type of kid who typically would get a USNTDP spot like Bracco.Do you know that Stranges was offered a spot at the NTDP? He might’ve been viewed as a top kid at the time prior to junior, but the way he plays makes him exactly the type of player who might get overrated and he wasn’t a top player by his draft season. I’m not saying this is definitely the case, but would it be so crazy if they didn’t offer him a spot?
Is it still really expensive for kids to get out of NTDP player agreements? Isn't it like $50k to get out of it or something?Strangest was offered by the NTDP and had signed his NTDP player agreement already before bolting to London.

The production indicates that could be the case but I’m not there yetI love Beniers. Not glamorous, but he's a player you win with. If Fantilli is better, he's going to be quite the player. Close to Mathews/Draisaitl level, maybe?
Friend of mine was their starter for a few years (this was over a decade ago), and he had nothing but great things to say about the organization, even though they were terrible in front of him. It’s cool to see his face light up when asked about the Chicago Steel in an interview before the game.

I said many times ahead of the 2022 draft that I’d take Fantilli 1st.So you obviously have spoken about this matter before Fantilli started his freshman season and you knew the top 5 picks of the last draft would have somehow a slow start, correct ?
