He's not though lol. This sudden spike in scoring is the reason his totals are high. Off the top of my head the following players were better

Stamkos in D+3 was 5th in points, 2nd in goals (7th in PPG)
Draisaitl in D+3 was 7th in points, 10th in PPG
Malkin in D+3 was 1st in points, 2nd in PPG

His season is actually somewhat comparable to Matthews D+3. Stutzle is 14th in PPG while Matthews was 20th in PPG
I think you got that wrong. Malkin's D+3 was actually his rookie season, which was 2006-07 where he was 18th in points (19th in PPG). He was drafted in 2004, which means his D+1 was 2004-05, his D+2 was 2005-06, his D+3 was 2006-07.

Malkin was 18th in points, 19th in PPG (2006-07)
Draisaitl was 8th in points, 10th in PPG (2016-17)
Stamkos was 5th in points, 7th in PPG (2010-11)

You're right.

Matthews has a down season just like Ovechkin and Malkin.

It happens. Tim Stutzle is no Matthews, Ovechkin or Malkin though.

No reason to bring Crosby into this, no one thinks Stutzle is anyway near Crosby anyway.

Once again you’re wrong. Matthews is not 20th in scoring. He’s 28th.
Do you ever fact check before you post. This is as bad as your mistake on Crosby’s’down’ years.

Who said anything about 20th in scoring? Are you imagining things?

I think the poll results are pretty indicative. Almost a coin toss when you factor in that one is about $5M cheaper.

I figured $13M per year would be the landing zone on max term, but maybe it should be $14 as some have suggested. I didn’t want to inflate that number too much and risk the credibility of the question.

Depends on the Matthew's AAV. Anything higher than 13-14 mill and it is understandable that people pick Stuzle. Matthews definitely isn't twice as good as Stuzle, I don't even know if he's 1.25-1.5 times better than Stuzle tbh.

I’ll take the next 5 years of Matthews at 13m over the next 8 years of Stützle at 8.35.

Look at DeBrincat, the hardest thing in this league is scoring goals.

I know this defeats the purpose of this poll now but if Jimmy puts up a 40 goal 50-60 point season next year it’s him, and I think it’s totally within the realm of possibility.

Not sure I understand this post. Stutzle might score 90+ pts THIS season. I can understand if some people need to see if Stutzle can do it again but 8.35 vs 13.0 you take Stutzle AINEC

Stützle pretty easily. I think I’d keep Stützle if their cap hits were the same. Don’t think this is a down year for Matthews - think we’ve already seen the best of him.
Matthews is 25 years old......was there a lot of Sens posters complaining about Chychrun being past his prime when acquired since he is 24? Or are you getting his prime for the rest of the season and then all downhill after that?

Dman peak generally 3-4 years after forwards. Dman usually come into their own around 25-30 as their peak forwards 21-25.

It was mostly because of his injuries and being a lefty than past his prime.

I mean hes probably not wrong that Matthews has likely had the best season that hes ever going to have by the age Matthews is now Ovi had already had his best ever season. That doesnt mean Ovi has been bad or underwhelming since...

An injured Matthews is playing better than Stutzle this season... this is easily Matthews.

I also saw some people saying Matthews signed for 5 years to maximize his earnings... he wanted 8.

Home is far from a draw for many people.

The guy clearly loves attention, where he will get very little in Arizona.

Also if he wants to win, a team actively sourcing ways to not pay anyone but still reach the cap floor sure as hell isn't the team to do it
Tavares left a more successful team in NYC to go home.

Attention? He'll be the biggest draw and the sole ambassador for the Hispanic and Mexican market in AZ.

If he wants to win it's not like the Leafs give him much chance. Maybe as the premier NHLer in AZ Matthews can steer AZ in a new direction.

No, Dubas couldn’t afford his number at 8, it was higher.

Hockey is a niche market so i don't see the abassador role meaning much. Even super small hockey markets like Japan & GB have national teams and a domestic leauge, i don't think Mexico has either.

He could afford it, he preferred the number at 5. Do you have a source that he couldn't afford it? You've probably been saying the Leafs have been in cap trouble for years... yet they aren't.

The Coyotes aren't even selling out their arena and you think that he will be a big draw down there... this is just wishful thinking from you.

A yes the massive Mexican and Hispanic hockey market... You're going to say thats anywhere close to a Toronto and overall Canadian market?

Tavares left to a team who was clearly up and coming with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly, etc.

Arizona has.... Keller? Can they even afford Matthews? They struggled to pay their own players and are cheating the Cap to pay as little as possible.
The population of Mexico exceeds 125 million. Throw in another 10 million plus for AZ, western TX, New Mexico and the border area of California...all of which lack any other NHL team for fan competition.

Yeah, it's a massive market.
