Precisely.

This reminds me of when the Jets had to unload Steve Mason's contract, as he didn't work out in Winnipeg. The Jets had to give up Joel Armia in addition to Mason, in exchange for Montreal's 7th round draft pick.

The Sharks will likely have to give up a first round draft pick AND Evander Kane, in order to trade him.
No. We can bury him, and buy him out in the offseason. We will keep our first round pick.

I'm pretty sure they're saying IF the Sharks need to dump his contract, that's likely what it'll cost, not that the Sharks absolutely need to. The Sharks aren't contending anytime soon so of course they can manage the cap hit.

my whole point is that if sjs wants to get into a playoff position rn they have to battle vegas nash and dallas for a spot and dallas had 3-4 games in hand when i wrote that. so my whole thing is that if you think sharks are making the playoffs this year they have a long ways to go especially the 3 teams that theyre battling for a spot.

Those aren't the only teams that they're competing with but being tied with other teams having games in hand puts them in playoff contention. If you think that they're not just because of games in hand when there's still well more than half the season to go then you're overly tight on what contention actually means in an absurd way. Considering they haven't even played any of the teams within their division outside of Calgary, it's still way too early to say any sort of thing on that front. Calgary, Anaheim, and Edmonton are not guaranteed those top three spots.
