Player Discussion Evan Bouchard

Handicap Bouch's playmaking by Nurse creating chaos all night when he's out. Nurse needs a more stay home defender that can keep leaning to covering for his chaos. Then we handicap Ekholm by taking away the elite playmaking on his pair. Last time Ek had to babysit a young D, he was sent off as a cap dump with lots of term left on his deal.

Dunno if that will work out too well overall. Emberson might be the stay home guy that could work with Nurse. If not, Bowman has work to do still.
Ekholm was sent off as a cap dump?

What?

I would like to see us re sign Bouchard this summer. I don't see much reason why we would want to wait

I highly doubt Knoblauch will separate Bouchard and Ekholm. We did that last year for a bit at the start and it was one of many initiatives we did that crashed and burned

Ekholm wasn't healthy enough at the beginning of the season to give it a proper try.

He still wasn’t a cap dump.

He brought back 2 first rounders

Having to get Barrie off our cap was part of the cost. And Schaefer was already looking like a weak pick taking a step back from his draft year. Was basically for a 1st. For a D we desperately needed with 3 years left on his deal, that's pretty generous of Nashville. Although, they wanted him off the books.

IMO, trading a regular roster player, especially someone you developed their whole career, with years left on their deal for magic beans is cap dumping. If we were to trade Kane this season for a 1st and some cheap 3rd liner to a team desperate for some scoring to prepare for the summer, I'd call that a cap dump as well.

Moreso with the reported ask of 11M.

Where do you think the number actually lands?

Seider at $8.55M really helps IMO. You obviously wouldn't expect the Bouchard camp to admit it, but Seider is the better all around defender and we are only paying for two additional UFA years given Bouchard's bridge.

I'm thinking high 9's. Like 9.7M, that has a nice ring to it.

Seider struggled the 2 seasons after his rookie year. Not a sniff of playoffs while Bouch blew the doors off in 2 playoff runs already. 21 more points than any other D the last 2 playoff years. 9 more than anyone the last 3 playoffs.

Dobson needs a deal next summer too, and Lou has been pretty generous these days for whatever reason. But also, Dobson probably won't get a sniff in playoffs either. If he does, he managed 3 assists in his last 2 playoffs.

If Dobson gets tossed ~10M, we are hooped I think. 11M+ for sure if Bouch can follow up last year. If the cap increase is massive, makes it even harder.

Honestly closer to $10M, personally I'm happy with $11M, he's worth it, no question in my mind, but I expect him to go in a $11M, the team might start around $9-9.5M then meet around the middle.

Can't say for certain, but if you're the organization you cannot let this linger over $500K-$1M per.

Yes, getting Bouchard done before Dobson will be important for Bouchard's overall cap hit for this team imo.

Except Bouchard had to put up with being bridged. Even if he is worse he'd get more than Seider. But I agree it's at least a comparable

I'm sorry to whoever is going to get mad at me again, but I have to bump this thread. I waited until the halfway point.

Bouchard has been beyond horrible the first half of this season. Game after game. Over and over again. What the hell was that performance last night in the Pittsburgh game?

I hope for the sake of our cup aspirations that he picks it up a bit in the second half. We need you Bouch. We really do.

No way in hell I give him more than 7 million a year. He's been brutal.

If he wants 10, trade him and pick up another journeyman offensive type d-man like Barrie to play on the PP. Maybe at least that guy could HIT THE f***ING NET.

I think he's just entering the next stage in his growth.

Teams have identified him and are attacking him hard as a point of weakness.
I think he'll come around and adapt.

Agreed. Poochard ain't worth more than 6-7. If he's asking above that and it looks like he might hold out for more, then move him at the deadline.

Lol.... "move him at the deadline" in the last year that we have Drai at $8.5 and Bouch at $4...

Yeah... that makes perfect sense.

Ridiculous! You go for broke, trade his RFA rights this summer for a haul and use the $8M you had set aside on the next best D you can get... hint that guy won't be as good as Bouchard.

Or you swallow your pride and sign him.

At this point those are the only options.

$9.5M cap hit on a salary deferred deal that pays him $11M x 8 in total. Everybody is happy.

Ran the numbers btw...

$11M x 8 years
$3M per year is deferred, beginning 5 years after the contract... Bouchard would be 38 years old, so likely first year of his retirement and he's happy to get $3M at a lower tax rate since he won't still be making an NHL salary.

Cap Hit = $9.593M

If he wants to defer until he's 40 (so he assumes his career may be longer), than the cap hit falls to $9.433M

So you can give the guy exactly what he's asking for, as long as he is willing to make some concession.

With that cost, no, not everyone would be happy. Nurse 2.0 contract.

I presume you have thought out your alternative?

Any examples of 82 point defensemen willing to sign for less than a $9.5M cap hit?

The last objectively similar comparable is Makar in 2021. He had just scored 44 in 44 and signed for an AAV of $9M. Cap has increased since then by 8%, so that would put Bouchard at $9.7M

And of course Oilers management would argue that Makar is a more complete two-way player, but Bouchard's camp will rightly so, say prove it... and ALL of the fancy stats say that Bouchard is a better outscorer, ... and the argument that it depends on who he's playing with goes out the window... Bouchard is a better outscorer than Makar even when you factor out McK+Rantanen vs McDrai.

I don't like it either, but I don't think you are living in reality land if you think we can sign him under $9M

And I think it's even further fantasy if you think we can sign a different UFA for significantly less than that and get the same performance.

Ultimately Bouchard's next contract is going to be near exclusively decided by how he does in the playoffs.

Though his regular season play this year has done nothing to show he's worth 7+.
