After having the night to think think things over a bit....this whole thing of revealing he'll spend 'near' the cap starting in 2021 still doesn't make sense. And in all honesty, why would the corporate sponsors care so much? They are there to get a tax break and advertise and have tickets to gift to clients. There isn't that much of a market difference for them if the team is in last place or not. Most of them likely aren't even hockey fans (at least, not for the Sens). On ice performance would be secondary to them...what they want most is a good vehicle to attach to their brand, and a respectable partnership. Melynk and Dorion sure as hell don't provide that, no matter how much is spent on player salaries.

It all makes sense, Boro is a UFA in 2020-2021. :D

On a serious note, how tone deaf is this organization? It's not necessarily about spending to the cap, if you spend your $ on crap, who cares?

It's about investing in, and running a quality organization. And when we do build up and draft and develop players, we keep them on the roster because they're good and can help us achieve success. And if we have too many of these players, and need to make roster changes, then you have the foresight to plan ahead and make the decisions on which players to keep, and who to trade, and to maximize the best return on those players you need to trade by actually planning ahead.

Preach. We don't need to spend to the cap, we just need to spend wisely in players and invest in the front office.

If Melnyk is staying, I'm just praying that someone can convince him to take his head out of his ass, and hire a proper hockey ops department and let it do it's f***ing job.

I'll believe it when I see it, not that I trust any rebuild with either Dorion or Melnyk at the helm either way. The incompetence at the top has eroded any confidence or hope I've had in this franchise, and neither will be returning until the house has been cleaned of both the owner and the GM.

Eugene Melnyk and partner John Ruddy of the Trinity Development Group, were already in Toronto, for several days of Mediation talks, that started Monday in an attempt to try to the save RendezVous LeBreton’s deal with the National Capital Commission.

Then there was the Scheduled Corporate Sponsorship event, on Tuesday, at the Hockey Hall of Fame, where he made this commitment to those in attendance.

The Senators then released the Commitment, to the public the next day (Wednesday).

You’ve been defending Poo-Jeans endlessly about how poor the Ottawa market is and how revenues are so low and then he cuts you out at the Knees by saying he has the money to spend to the Cap for 5 years.

Now you know what it’s like to work for Poo-Jeans Melnyck. All that work you’ve put in and the man undercuts everything you’ve ever believed in.

We told you so

Where are the spin doctors this morning?

Trying to rationalize the paradox of explaining how Melnyk is correct when he doesn't spend money on the team, but also correct when he does spend money on the team.

Basically, Melnyk is Schrodinger's Owner. He is the ideal owner in all forms at all times, capable of being anything, but when we open the box and see the real Melnyk, separate from all other hypothetical Melnyks, that version of Melnyk is also the best one, so whatever direction he takes with the team is inevitably the best one by default.

If we don't have Stone/Duchene here, who are we going to be spending money on to be a cap team?

Chabot is the only guy on this roster now, both prospect and player, who is going to command a stars salary by 2021.

We aren't going to be getting guys with big pice tags in UFA.

Who are we going to be spending the money on? I'm sure Euge already thought of this, there's a bit of grey area where he's able to say "well Stone and Duchene never stayed, we planned on them leading the team in those years".

It's Thursday the 7th, we have a day, maybe 3 at max to sign these guys. It isn't happening.

I'll gladly eat crow if he spends to the cap a few years from now and we can actually participate in the "build" part of "rebuild".

I don't blame anybody for being pessimistic. Consider Melnyk's track record and his overall dishonesty with the fan base. He has not spent money since the 2012 lockout. We consistently have lost players, or have taken steps back as a result.

A rebuild like the one he is describing is what we should be doing right now. I don't have confidence those are our intentions. I think this is a well timed PR exercise so that when Duchene and/or Stone don't re-sign, we have a built in story to deflect from any negative fans or media questioning why we cannot pay our stars to retain them, or why we cannot convince our stars to buy into our rebuild.

In terms of the NHL, 2021 is a long time away, and a lot can change. It'll be easy for Melnyk to point towards Duchene, Stone, and Karlsson walking as a catalyst for this team not needing to spend to the cap right then, because the "right pieces" are not yet in place by 2021, and participating in the free agent market is a recipe for disaster. (Which is true, but it would be a deflection).

For me, if Stone and Duchene walk, the first big sign will be Chabot. Do we give him 7-8 years at 7-8 million in the summer of 2019 or 2020?

Well, if he keeps his word and we continue to get revenue sharing, that statement could be correct. :D

The most truthfull post in this entire thread is the leafs paying for it. They wont be spending to the cap but the sens are now receiving help from other teams and the leafs pay the most into it I am sure.

I cant believe not one member of the media has not roasted Melnyk for this. Pathetic reporting.

Tone deaf and completely oblivious, apparently.

Dark, dark times moving forward with Melnyk and Dorion. Dark times.

Wait I thought we were in the dark times? Oh no thats in the following weeks when they trade Stone and Duchene while extending Ceci and Dzingel oh ok.

Oh wait no those arent the dark times when Colorado picks first overall with the sens pick after getting a garbage return for Duchene oh ok.

Oh wait no those arent the dark times you mean when Ottawa has to extend Chabot but he ends up holding out because they low ball him then he is traded oh ok.

Oh wait those arent the dark times its when the franchise moves after 0 people attend any games after chabot is traded oh ok.

Its now dark with no NHL franchise in the Capital of Canada.

I wonder if this statement was directed at the mediation negotiations instead of the fans/players. He did the same thing at the outdoor game.

The Devcore guys are probably looking for a stake in the team, and telling him he can't afford to keep players on the team.

The one thing I’d like to check into is the ‘Donations’ part of his statement. He says the Senators have contributed $105 million - is that money directly from the Senators or is this money donated by the community through things like Sens House that is redistributed through the Sens.

I find that statement misleading and attributes generosity to the team and not the community. Just arrogant and disingenuous, it sums up Melnycks attitude

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you, for your amusement:

The Biggest Liar and Hypocrite in the Long and Storied History of HFSens.

Admission is free, at least as far as currency is concerned. The owners of the exhibit take no responsibility for any emotional distress that results from repeated viewing.

At this point I might even unblock the poster you made the post about because id like to witness the most far fetched perspective of the Ottawa senators out there.

Great post.

My guess is that if a former Mod consistently reported gaslighting/threadjacking posts the current Mods would be inclined to take action.
