If Dubas was super crunched and willing to give up Sandin for pennies like we did Siegenthaler that's one thing but this is effectively the Nils Lundkvist overpayment trade Dallas made without the same organizational need behind it. On top of Toronto having become the new Pittsburgh making their D look much better than they are (look at Connor TImmins who has been a much better player than Sandin after coming there having cost them an AHLer)

Yes exactly. He's had a good season with the Caps but it's very much an outlier. I remember early in the season Caps fans were shitting all over the guy. He'll be looking to cash in on this season and there's a very good chance he becomes the next version of "that player who somebody overpays for" and then reverts to the mean. I'd rather he does that somewhere else, especially since we need to get younger.
Sandin has the potential to be a much better player over the long term. And he's young. This is what Caps fans were clamouring for.

I cannot care at all about what type of skater Sandin is given his other good qualities. If I had to guess skating is probably the most overrated aspect of players today now that teams are getting wise to the idea that size just doesn't matter at all.
Fehervary is one of the best skaters in the league from the blueline and yet he's...not good at all. Plenty of swift skating players stink, and plenty of clunky skaters are outstanding.

Johansen not being in the NHL isn’t because they don’t know what they have in him. He was pencilled in for a spot on the roster this year and couldn’t beat out Irwin for a number 8 spot. I think Alexeyev will get more opportunity over the rest of the season, out of necessity as much as anything with Orlov and Gus both gone, but he hasn’t shown an awful lot so far. Worth remembering most scouts didn’t have him as more than a third pairing defensemen when he was drafted.
I pretty much gave up on Johansen and as long as is Lavi coach our other youngsters will go that route sadly.
Let me guess, this slow small offensive defenseman has amazing Tage Thompson is trash stats on a team where Austin Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander have the puck 80% of the time. So good in fact that their clueless GM traded him in the middle of a playoff run while he's signed cheaply and cost controlled. Same as they did with another fancy stat darling Travis Dermott, those clueless Leafs.

But when you have core pieces that are all basically slow aside from Kuznetsov it's...not ideal. Not ideal in terms of recovery potential and breakdowns. IQ can help anticipate more quickly, etc. and there's potential for further improvement but hard to be convinced as-is.
They may be half-thinking post-core and there's perhaps quite strong cap value to be had next season. But given their transitional state overall it's hard to be sold at this point. They've got so much more work to do.

At the end of the day they’ve traded Orlov and Gus - two guys likely to have walked for nothing at season’s end - for Sandin. They’ve got some additional draft capital from trading Mojo and Hathaway (plus taking on Smith), and they haven’t parted with any of their prospects.
I’d say that’s pretty decent so far, even if they end up bringing someone in for 2LD at the draft or free agency.

So essentially Orlov for Sandin, got a younger offensive LD that seems ready for big minutes. Wasn’t trusted in leaf land for whatever reason, Laviolette hates this trade lol

For the umpteenth time, forgive me if I don't trust the coaches player evaluations.
Minus the other aspects that made Orlov Orlov. Thankfully his specialty - left shot PP quarterbacking - won't be wasted on our powerplay setup that in no way has been focused on Ovechkin at LD and a right hand shot at RD feeding him one timers to Ovechkin island going back to 2005.

But GMBM has ultimate decision on roster moves, so the choice to waive Johansen was as much his as it was Lavi’s. It’s fine to think that reflects poorly on him too, but we shouldn’t pretend this was only a coaching decision.
