When slowed down you kind of had an argument for a slew foot, but it was pretty weak.

I hope he will be reviewed and back right away, but who knows.

Am impressed so far by Downey especially on no notice.
Let’s give it time on Downey. We have long seen goalies look good early in their Erie career and then they eventually sputter. Give it some time. I’ll gladly eat my words if he is something though. I certianly don’t want to rely on Nicholls. Sucks to lose Lalonde. It was the one bright spot and he barely gets back before getting injuried. This team just can’t even buy luck in recent years

And it’s currently the Erie special. Get a lead and blow it.

Truthfully, Erie’s save percentage in recent years averages .858-.888 which is generous.

how has windsors boy sova been for you guys this year? i havent seen enough erie otters to have an educated opinion

Downey looked good tonight.

I feel like if he can get accustomed to the team he can be a solid Lalonde backup which could help us win a couple more games. Now just curious how long Lalonde will be out. If it's an extended period of time Downey will likely have to see 75% of the starts.

It’s literally Erie’s luck with goaltending. We get a solid #1 in Campbell… he’s injured and out the rest of the season last year. Now, Lalonde earned his #1 start this year… injured at the start of the season.

Hopefully Lalonde isn’t serious and it’s just for precaution since it’s only October.

I think you're right. I initially asked Erie's beat reporter and this was the answer I got:

They talked about it on the radio broadcast last night when I was driving home...I can't remember what was said. Shawn? also talked briefly about Lalonde's injury, Alfano’s absence and a few other team things. I may tune into 1400 AM radio before games when they are away as it may be the only reliable way to get up to date information.

Morton is skating warmups. Good review by the league to overturn the misconduct.

IMO there needs to be some sort of group that reviews these disciplinary actions in real time and if overturned they can come back after their 5 minutes.

Scott can go in the top 5 worst refs.

I’d have to rewatch but I am almost 99.9% positive that Erie scored before the Artichuk goal. The puck most definitely hit top shelf and bounced out. I could be wrong watching it on real time literally 5 feet from the net, so if anyone watching the feed with Bednard’s commentary please clarify.

Blatant trips at the end of the period in front of him and he didn’t call it.

No discipline...so much individual play...a defender taking the vast majority of shots on the power play...we are about 14 minutes into the 3rd and haven't seen at least 3 players on the ice for our forward group. Down right embarrassing...

That’s what a defensive minded coach will do. Embarrassing. Power play is worthless.

Funny how Artichuk is on the 4th line and the only one to score.

BJ Adams said “We’re really, really, really close to being a good team.”

Except we have mediocre goaltending for how many years now (no shade to Downey as he’s been on the spot short notice), we don’t play defense, and our PP is next to nonexistent. Keep up the good work coach. I’m not sure what team he’s looking at. Playing 20 minutes of hockey each night won’t win us many games.

Whatever they need to keep telling themselves so they don’t lose their jobs. It’s clear Dave thinks that too based on trades. Gilmartin is a trade you make when you are just trying to add a depth forward on a team with high end skill. Not someone you give real assets for and expect to make a difference or be that top scorer. One of my biggest issues with this team is the mindset. Quotes like this, trades they make, etc. They just don’t get it or acknowledge their shortcomings and as a result, they don’t fix the issues.

What is the point of a 4th line when the kids might get a shift a period, 2 if they are lucky?
Because if we run three lines of defense each night and run our top line to the ground maybe the 4th line will get a shift or two.

Maybe BJ doesn’t know what depth is.

I’m certainly not going to excuse BJ but to be fair, they are trying to still win some games and not be an embarrassment this year. You start rotating 4 lines already like the season is over and I guarantee things will get uglier. Their 4th line won’t generate much of anything. Their best forwards still aren’t generating much but most everyone in their top 9 still has more skill than their bottom line.. and considering BJ is playing Spence as much as he is - I don’t think it’s an anti youth thing. They are playing their best players and hoping that’s enough. The worst part is, it’s not. From that standpoint, I agree. Play the kids.

But we can’t act like playing the 4th line will matter for the win column. For development, sure. But it’s not even 10 games into the season yet.. they still think they can compete (depsite the delusion that is). Also its not like Erie is getting 2-3 goal leads to let their 4th line guys play and the few times they get leads, they usually blow them right away. Who on the 4th line should be playing? I agree these kids need to develop but it’s not like I see huge upside with any 4th liner. Maybe Artichuk can find a solid role but he’s undersized and has poor coaching. It just is what it is. The coaching blows. I don’t think it blows because they don’t play the right guys or don’t rotate lines. No, it blows because they don’t develop anyone in practice or run the best system to utilize any skill they have

Artichuk, Edwards got 1 shift in the 3rd minus Messier. If you count their time not on the ice in the 2nd period because of our penalties...these kids might have 3 - 4 minutes in the game, tops. The same with last night.

I get it. I get the frustration and I’ll probably be there too when it’s January and we are a 8/9 seed team. But again, they aren’t good enough. We can debate why that is and the lack of development but imo they aren’t anything to get excited about. 10 games into the year and the team is trying to tread water, win some games, and grow confidence. Now is not the time to be rolling 4 lines consistently. They don’t even have the talent in their top 6 to generate consistent offense. So I can’t imagine what their 4th line would do. It’s up to BJ and the staff to develop them slowly, over time, and in practice or better situations against worse teams when you have the lead - then you can start to up that ice time during the year. Or you do it when the team is 12-18-2 and going nowhere. Right now is not really the time when they are trying not to drown, win games, and gain confidence. Especially without one of their best players/starting G in Lalonde

I agree, the kids need to develop. But if they aren’t there yet, then I don’t want Erie to play them just to play them. Ice time helps development but do we really think right now is the time to push that narrative? Idk, not yet for me. They are somehow 4-4-0-2 and Lalonde played only 2 games. They could have 5/6 wins if he was here all year and they had half a clue in the SO. Their GD looks wack still, and they aren’t generating nearly enough offense, but minus 2 beat down losses (combined 13-2); they have been right there. I am still annoyed with so much, including the overall direction of the team. But I’m not going to fault BJ for riding his best players early, while their best player (maybe?) is out in net, and they are trying not to give up easy goals on a 4th line breakdown because their offense can’t makeup for it

Nicholls really needed that game. It was nice to see our second line starting to click and our 3rd line did well too. Gilmartin, Saganiuk, and Bressette started working well and are a pain to try and breakout against. I've been impressed by Smith so far this season as well. It will be interesting to see where Alfano fits in when he is healthy.

Defensively IMO the risk/reward of Sova and Kyrou is just that. There are times they press and its good, but also seems they try to push forward too much at times. I hope they can settle down and mature with their presses. Also, curious what defensively we look like when Johnston is healthy.
