Why would he be a distraction? He was good enough as a 4c for Montreal to reach the finals.

As a leafs fan, I can tell you their win over us had absolutely nothing to do with staal, and in fact, had they not had staal, likely would have performed better overall. He was a non-factor in our series, so I don't accept that part of your argument tbh.

The guy was written off when the Wild signed him on the cheap in '16 - ended up one of the top bang for the buck contracts ever. Rangers fans then were to what Canadiens fans are now, saying he was done, useless. I'd wager he's not as bad as is being said: had 19 goals and 47 points in 66 games just the year before last.

Buffalo was awful last season, and I'm guessing Montreal did what the Rangers did, plug him in at the bottom and hope for the best.

He is shite if you play him bottom 6. Give him a chance with good players in the top 6 you might get a pleasant surprise.

Staal had 4 points in 6 games vs the Leafs all at 5v5 playing only 10 mins a game. How is that a non factor especially for a 4th liner? LOL

He ended up 5th in scoring on the Habs, 3rd in 5v5 scoring, 1 point behind Caufield, 2-3 behind Suzuki and was the oldest member of the team, former Cup, World Championship Gold and Olympic Gold winner. It would be naïve to think he wasn't a respected voice in the room on top of his decent production. Montreal more then got their money worth out of him even though his regular season wasn't at all good. You literally couldn't ask for more out of a 4th liner.

An example of non factor 4th liner would have been Thornton, zero points 5v5, 1 PP point with similar mins played per game while also dressing for all 7 games. He put up as many points 5v5 as the Leafs entire bottom 6 forwards lines combined. Hell, switch players and maybe Toronto wins.

It's amusing to read tour take on this considering how effective the Armia - Staal - Perry line was against the Leafs late in the series and against the sweep of the Jets in the 2nd round. Lets agree to disagree on this.

i dont need stats to recognize reality, because while they do hold weight, when you watch every game you can recognize how they can distort reality at times. but yes thornton was even more of a non-factor, agreed on that one.

All it comes down to is what is the list of teams that Staal ACTUALLY wants to play for? And then of those teams, are there any that would be interested in having Staal.

If there’s a fit and he’s happy to be there then it wouldn’t shock me if he puts up a 50 point season. He is like a petulant child though in that if you put him in a situation that isn’t 100% to his liking then he’s gonna sulk and be a dark cloud.

Happy Staal = Good player
Sad Staal = Grounded teenager without phone privileges
