He didn't play for MN last year, he was traded after showing signs of decline. That decline happened quite drastically in BUF and then MON after the deadline trade. He is likely toast at this point, if the COL fan above wants to have him and play him, this Wild fan would be thrilled.

Canes have too many centers already. The heart strings say yes, but the desire for the team to win says no thanks.

Russo's latest podcast mentioned Staal and Guerin were talking this summer. The mention was in context of former Wild players coming back and contributing off-ice though so probably not relevant here. Unless Russo just assumed that's what they were talking about. It was a kind of kick in the nuts parting so maybe just mending fences.
