That’s what I got from it, I totally think he’s bailing because he knows matthews isn’t resigning, which in turn makes dubas the most hated person which in turn means his wife can’t go out in public without some sort of backlash, whether is weird looks, somebody says something. Dubas is bailing for sure

I think that's a good cover story to save face. I mean PR wise it works out. Dubas was gone regardless, they would have extended him after rd1 in good faith otherwise.

It really is, I mean dubas and his wife still have to go out in the public, go get groceries, etc, he doesn’t want to be heckled or harassed or his wife cause he was the guy that signed matthews to a 5 yr deal and matthews walks. This presser was to garner sympathy so the public can stay off his back when matthews walks. And the second news comes out dubas is not coming out, 100% matthews isn’t resigning in Toronto , dubas walking is the alarm bell or red flag to that

Are you sure about that? Friedman said that he wanted to sign in Toronto for 4-5 years again so long as he comes in as the highest paid player. That would mean 12.7-13m or so. I think it's doable for us.

Of course it's affecting the discussion. People/media should be talking about how Dubas doesn't deserve to stay because of said "shitshow" and the years of history.

Instead everyone's talking about how maybe Dubas might not even accept the Toronto offer of an extension when it comes. Because of how "tough" it's been on his family. Lol how did it spin around to us being beholden to his charity? He should be begging to keep his job after failing so consistently.

Who is? The lunatic fringe posting on internet sites (I include myself wholeheartedly)? Not everyone agrees with you that he doesn't deserve to stay, media or otherwise, just because you want that to be the conversation being had doesn't beholden (good word) others to it. I've heard and read both sides of does he deserve to stay or not coming out of MSM. None of them have I seen "the real concern here is that he won't come back because it is stressful".

I mean, which is it? If one doesn't want him back on merit, then wtf does it matter if family considerations enter in to not coming back? Who cares?

Conversely, if one does want him back, you are hoping that it's not a big enough deal to scully it because money and position and fame overcome it. Again, it becomes inconsequential to ones hopeful outcome.

I hope he comes back, because I like the idea of continuity, have seen too much constant upheaval of the Leafs, it has been the one constant for my 40-ish years of fandom, and I want to see if not doing that might be different. But honestly, won't be crushed, I am not some fanboy, and the argument of playoff failure is legit and not lost on me.

But in the context of this thread and this board, the... hate.. attached to a really not much of a statement at an end of the season presser about talking it over with family is just.. so over the top that I have to comment. Drag him through the ditch for one playoff series win, that I get, but this.. thing.. over a comment about family at a presser.. the guy is not actually the anti-christ, lets chill.

that doesn't mean much. Johnston reported with certainty that Board/Shanny didnt offer one.

Sure. I was just answering the question of where that suggestion came from.

I count myself high up in stupid Leaf fandom, I wouldn't know Dubas wife if I had a 30m conversation with her.

Time will tell but dubas bailing is your first and really only clue you really need to know whether matthews has any real intention of coming back, which I don’t think he will

Not necessarily... (Nylander?). No doubt that winning only the one round to this point has to be seen as a case of falling below expectations. I imagine the plan was to run with Matthews and Marner until they reached UFA status though and then reassess plans prior to moving forward if the players aren't already re-signed and/or the team isn't as successful as expected.
I imagine that was the plan as well.

There were always whispers that perhaps AM may want to return to the states at the end of the 5 years. Leafs management almost completely handcuffed themselves by giving him a NMC in his final year. And then to further complicate matters, they give Marner the NMC for the final two years of his deal which kicks in at the exact same time as Matthews.

A good plan has contingencies, Dubas got schooled by the respective player's agents and gave away all the leverage.

He said "I think he wants to sign for around 4-5 years, but I think the Maple Leafs know if they're going to do that he's probably going to be the highest paid player in the league and I think they're willing to do it".

Awesome thanks for the quote. Yeah it makes sense, the return we get on him right now would suck so we may as well retool under new direction and keep going for 4-5 more years.

Centi, not trying to single out, but this is what I mean here.

This is Toronto, Canada. Nobody is following Dubas and his wife around hucking grapes at her in the grocery store cussing her out. It's not real. It's an internet wormhole wrapped in an echo chamber. This is not what he is talking about saying its been a hard year personally. Its not. It's a vanilla ice cream statement that went two sentences too long in an emotional presser. Really, that all.

Number of players with an AVV of greater than 10 million left in the playoffs……………….
Zero.
What do you think of that Kyle

I am not sure of Carolina and honestly too lazy to check but, Florida, Vegas and Texas are all 0% state tax. Toronto is nearly half. I get the whole good account BS, but those cost money too and lots of hurdles. There’s a reason players take discounts in some places and not others. Take away the fact we’re leafs fans. If you have no fandom, is Toronto as a city above any of the 4 teams left on your desire to live in list?

Seems like people are mixing up the Tampa fan interaction and Dubas mentioning the job demands putting pressure on the family and all of a sudden it's a Harry and Meghan situation... don't think that's what's happening...

Florida, Vegas, and Dallas pay 36.6 percent tax. Carolina is 41.35.

I mean not at all. The crux of argument seems be some very personal offense that it's a ploy to get a contract, which is just.. an abhorrent concept I take it. Fine, 100% be passionate that Dubas must go, I get it. Make that argument on results, you've got a good one. Some 3D chess move looking 17 moves down the line, it's just not what it is. The MLSE Board is going to cold hearted to the best of their minds make a call, and f***ing Dubas' family maybe being stressed isn't going to have one damn thing to do with it.

This is the crux of the matter for me. The plan ostensibly was to have the big contracts lead the way and fill in the gaps around them as necessary. It'd be fair to state that one or more factors (the core, the supporting cast of players, the coach) have either stalled or failed to progress in a meaningful way to this point. My defence of the NMCs given to Matthews and Marner comes from the belief that these players essentially should be the final shoes to drop whenever change needs to occur...and that pursuing either path is likely to be indicative of a team in disarray.

Friedman might be right. I, for sure don't know, what will happen. I hope he re-signs.

If hes not signing an eight year deal then trade him.

Ok you might be right and I might be reading into too much, it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.
