In that role, the less private stuff you share for public consumption, the less people will pick on you for those things. The Leafs say so many goober things and being transparent, personal and that always ends up being the butt of a joke. It’s not worth it. If he comes back people will have a field day asking whether Mrs. signed off. It’s not worth it to bring your family into public chatter.

I don’t think Dubas cares what the public thinks about his personality and that’s why I respect him as a person. And it’s why a lot of players respect him league wide. I don’t want a yes man or stoic GM. I don’t need a hockey culture bro either as the GM. Be who you are as a person through and through. Just make the team good (which in fairness Kyle has done, players can’t execute)

Too many GM’s, players and executives are concerned about their image and it’s why the game sucks outside of the product and why players don’t get paid on par with other leagues and part of the reason why we have a stagnant cap. A little personality is good for the league.

Here’s my take :

I think dubas presser was genuine. His concern is his family. Outside of matthews if anyone has a pulse as to whether matthews would stay in Toronto it’s dubas. Well if dubas stays, and matthews strings him along and doesn’t resign and bolts July 2024, dubas instantly becomes the most hated person in the GTA. Want to know who else would get the brunt of this? His family! His family wouldn’t live a normal life and need security. I think that’s why he mentioned his family as he’s played this scenario out in his mind. He’s the one that gave matthews 5 yrs and the ntc. And dubas knows he and his family would get the backlash. Not saying it would be right that his family gets harassed at let’s say the grocery store, but people will be people.

They won't let it get to that point. If Dubas is brought back, I don't think he would be dumb enough to allow Matthews to hold leverage by July 1 and not sign an extension. (If he is, Shanny is laying the hammer on that one - this is fireable offense). This has to be jumped on ASAP. This is # 1 order of business for the off-season. If Matthews declines an extension because he wants to wait till '24, they will trade him.

More of a concern than an issue. Mental health should be taken seriously and if he needs a break, take it.

It really is amazing how much legs this family name drop thing has had. It's working as intended: generating sympathy, sparking speculation, lionization for having something ordinary like a family, baiting comments that can be perceived as insensitive, the inevitable emotional clapbacks, has the disgruntled fans not talking about the state of the hockey team, etc. Nothing he says is without purpose and this little drop about the family worked like a charm. Here's the truth: the importance of a married man's family is a given and having some issue or another within in any family at any time is the norm.

I agree that dubas wanted to garner sympathy. He did play it up

I really think we are taking too much from talking to family.
I still believe that he received an offer from the Leafs and wants to discuss with his wife.
It is as simple as that.
At least, I am unaware of anything done toward his family over the past few seasons, or reporters/medias harassing them trying to a soundbite.

Lastly, there is no way Dubas is thinking if AM won't resign he is the villain bc 1. He will trade him and 2. AM will be the villain not Dubas.

Dubas is propped up like a GOD by most of the media in this town , I don’t get how it was hard on his family.

Lol no he isn’t, and even if that were true, the media is far from the only consideration on what could be difficult for his family.

He is a genius for sure

This is going to sound really bad to say, but, I am hoping he’s not faking this because the chickens are coming home to roost over his failed loyalty to the core 4 and he’s using this mental health as an excuse to duck out of dodge.

My speculation is as follows. If I was Shanny and decided to not renew Dubas, I would find a graceful way for him to exit. Letting Dubas talk alone and say he needs to discuss with his family about whether continuing as GM gives Dubas the ability to say a few days later that he decided to focus on his family. A graceful public exit, even though it was Shanny who declined to renew.

Personally, I think we should keep Dubas and fire Keefe. Dubas has made some early rookie mistakes, but has now learned and will be an excellent GM moving forward. Keefe on the other hand has learned nothing.

The question is: Who could it be getting dealt?

I think Auston Matthews is probably off the table. It’s pretty much impossible to replace a top-five player in the world. The Leafs will focus 100 percent on signing him to an extension, and No. 34 made it clear in his end-of-season media availability that he wants to sign and stay (although the price point on said extension remains an interesting conversation to be had).

John Tavares also said Monday he planned to play out the remaining two years on his contract when I asked him how he would react if management approached him about possibly waiving his no-move. And good for him. As I always say, players who negotiate no-move clauses into their contracts should absolutely use them if they don’t want to go anywhere. That’s their right and no one should ever criticize them for that.

William Nylander is a possibility, but the fact that he has just one year left on his contract creates the complication of having to trade him with an extension done to maximize trade value. That means involving the player’s agent, and it does limit the field. Tkachuk, for example, gave the Flames five teams he wanted to be traded to last summer — because as a restricted free agent, obviously, the return would be greater if signed to an extension. Just like that, there’s no way Nylander’s camp would invite the Leafs to talk to 31 teams. They would have a short list. That doesn’t rule him out as a possible trade candidate; it just means it’s more complicated.

And then there’s Mitch Marner. Because he’s got two years left on his deal, his no-move doesn’t kick in until July 1 and there wouldn’t be an extension in play, he’s the cleanest transaction on the table. Teams would see natural value in Marner having two more years. And the Leafs would have the entire NHL market at their disposal before July 1.

But what would entice the Leafs to move a player of Marner’s immense talent? What would it take for them to consider it a franchise-forwarding deal?

To me, that’s a deal that has to at least net a top-pairing defenseman.

There isn’t anything that pops to mind right now as I look around the NHL trade market. But I would also say this: I don’t think anyone saw a Tkachuk for Huberdeau/Weegar trade as a remote possibility last May. It happened two months later and sent shock waves.

If the Leafs do decide to put feelers out on Marner, I think all bets are off as far as some teams being willing to move players you thought were untouchable.

That’s if the Leafs would move Marner. That remains to be seen.

All we know is that if Dubas remains GM, he’s willing to listen on anything. That’s his declaration from Monday. And it’s a pretty dramatic one.

Dubas has very young children. The amount of time he has had to spend away from his family the last few years has likely taken it's toll on him and his wife.

I think he was being genuine when he said he will either stay in Toronto or step away from the game for a while.

The next couple of days will be pivotal for the franchise.
Yes. If Dubas is too Beta to tell his wife to deal with his kids with her hired nannies while he has a hard working high impact high dollar career then he certainly can't stand up to Alpha hockey players and GMs.

This nonsense of some kind of work life balance with multi million dollar careers/responsibility is ridiculous. People make life choices/tradeoffs. You cannot have it all.

Dubas realized he painted himself into a corner and is debating if he wants to sneak out the back door or not. I was on board with him sticking around under the assumption he learned from his mistakes and was going to adjust but him considering throwing in the towel tells me he doesn't have the backbone to do what he needs to do so should probably be gone.

Ya, taken at face value that’s what he said too. If his family can’t handle it then he won’t do it. Look, you agree with him.
