Unqualified 32 year old handed a dream job of a lifetime. Bets everything on his core, and after 5 failures, now says this season took a toll on his family. I mean what were you expecting when you took the job ??

Why is that statement such an issue for you? Dubas could literally say I need air to breathe and you’d be on his ass about why is he breathing air.

He was asked a question and he answered it honestly. Dubas was on edge the entire year, it probably had a negative effect on his family, whether it meant less time spent with them, more irritable with his kids or wife. He’s allowed to reflect on that and mention that difficulty for him.

Yeah I think ideally you want a mix of experience levels and a diversity of opinions. The problem with the Leafs front office/coaches is pretty much everyone is a beginner learning on the job, and everyone thinks the same way. Tulsky would be great as a first time GM, as long as he's insulated with experienced people he can lean on if necessary

the way the FO is/was constructed is not an accident, Shanahan/Dubas wanted as much power retained as possible with them not having much experience either

More of a concern than an issue. Mental health should be taken seriously and if he needs a break, take it.

Do you think there was/is too many "YES" people?

I wonder if so, how much impact did Spezza have in the makeup and timeline of this years roster.

Before if someone disagreed, it would have been very easy for Dubas or someone in his front office to say you're wrong and insert whatever stat to justify it but that might not work quite as well with Spezza considering he just retired and actually was apart of this current team. He also stepped up in certain ways that he previously wasn't known for that showed how much certain people will sacrifice to win a cup.

I think our entire program needs more balance. I believe we went too far to one extreme and then attempted to shift back to the middle at the deadline.

Noone want's a team full of goons and we shouldn't pass over skill just to aquire size, physicality but you also cant act like these things hold zero value. Schenn is a perfect example of someone that many people didn't want and even went to the lengths of saying he should never play and saying players like Kokkonen, Hollowell, Mete should play before him but then he was one of our most consistent and important players in the playoffs.

I just don’t know how you would go from raw and exhausted and emotional and bringing up your family pressures and they jump right back into being Corporate Kyle all buttoned up and talking the Shapiro Aktins game.
If your referring to emotions, I'm thinking anger instead of pity would have went over better........

I didn’t get the sense Dubas himself needed a break. It seemed like his family potentially wants him to be more present. But he was just staying this year was harder because of all the pressure placed on him. I think that end of season press conference showed me he wants to be back and already has an offer on the table.

And? If he graduated from Queen's would that mean anything? One of my most successful friends never finished high school
it was a joke...........

only extra pressure was his expiring contract............

Agreed but it will be worse next year.

I feel like that’s not really for public consumption. The public and media don’t have any input on how you organize your private vs professional life or time demands or stresses. The talking points about the team won’t change. The pressure to win won’t go away. It’s not really a personal relationship that Leaf Nation could go easier on you if you feel like they’ve been too hard. The only pressure is you do your job well. I sympathize with anyone on the Leafs because it’s a demanding job but I don’t know how the disclosure will solve those problems for you if they’re real.

why not? if we are so confident that he can't get it done in the playoffs then the team shouldn't limit themselves and just make the best trade possible. if he comes back to torch us in the playoffs then so be it

It would be really nice to be on the other side of Marner looking like he’s about to cry when one of his former friends runs him through the boards.

Fans have a funny way of making things about them. I don’t think Dubas gives a rats ass what the fans think and I don’t think he was looking for sympathy either. He was asked a question and answered honestly. I’m sure a passing comment was made by his wife that this job is taking a toll on you honey and how that the dust has settled he can internalize it a bit more.

I think people on this board over analyze the shit out of everything. There isn’t an agenda play. He said earlier in the press conference he is an emotional guy and wears it. So his answers are going to follow that line as well.

they won't solve those problem, but it'll gain you some sympathy and have you viewed as a victim.......

Or thats an excuse to prevent the entire media apparatus calling for his dismissal.

Bingo.

Leafs ownership are completely brain dead if they have offered a contract extension to Dubas and bring him back. This is a complete $hit$how. Complete and utter stupidity. Terrible GM that should have been fired years ago and here they are willing to give him 3-5 more years on top of the 5 years he already had.

JFJ gets 3.5 years with 1 playoff round win
Burke gets 3 years
Nonis gets 3 years
Lou gets 3 years

Dubas gets 5 years winning 1 playoff round in year 5 and he gets a contract extension offer. Makes no sense.

They're too comfortable with only regular season success.

He’s definitely allowed to share his feelings on the matter. Just couldn’t say whether it will make his life easier having done so cause it doesn’t change the nature of the job.

Personally what I got from that part of the press conference was; “I’m ready to get to work on next season. Willing to make changes too. But my wife probably wasn’t exactly happy with my demeanour this year, so I need to smooth things out with her first” lol.

I think he’s like 95% back. Keefe on the other hand I think he’s dead in the water lol.

I think by his tone and talking to wife, he is gone
Sounds like he's getting his excuse ready for a "mutually agreed upon termination".

Basically he's been given the choice of quitting, and he's saying it's for family reasons.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I'm an optimist. :thumbu:

In that role, the less private stuff you share for public consumption, the less people will pick on you for those things. The Leafs say so many goober things and being transparent, personal and that always ends up being the butt of a joke. It’s not worth it. If he comes back people will have a field day asking whether Mrs. signed off. It’s not worth it to bring your family into public chatter.

Talking to your significant other and your family about stuff like this isn't bizarre or crazy or soft. It's what adult humans in healthy married relationships do.
Obviously but that doesn’t change the fact that they most likely have had many conversations prior to the presser yesterday.
do you really think his wife is going to tell him to walk away from a great paying job, his dream job this early in his career because its hard and people are being mean to him.
I get it if he was in his 60’s and had a long career in the NHL but his first nhl GM job…..come on even you can’t believe that would happen.
it was just a lame thing to say to get some sympathy or as many posters have figured if he doesn’t get an offer he can walk away with a little pride intact.
so I will say it one final time. No way in hell he walks away if they offer to keep him

If Dubas can’t handle the heat from the ups and downs of his first NHL GM job then he certainly isn’t the wunderkind that some hear would have us believe.
