Burning an ELC year, and he still will not have played on the smaller ice surface. Why?

It is best to control his developjment, and if that means keeping him in Montreal until December 1st, no big deal. It's not like we have to sit a superstar to make room.
How about no?! This makes no sense

I'm just shocked the fact that at the time of the trade, only 1 player (Anze freaking Kopitar) scored goals at a higher clip than Heineman in their draft year in the Swe-J20 league in the last 20+ years, didn't make more people sit up and say "hold up, this guy could be good". Those numbers aren't that hard to find.

Öhgren ended up surpassing his G/GP numbers this past season, but also had the luxury of playing on an absolutely stacked team/line.

I wonder if Similac and Schnarr were throw ins or if Hughes overestimated them.

? i don't think either were "throw-ins", nor have either really "underwhelmed".

schnarr was decent in his brief stint in Laval, no surprise that he's headed back there. Suspect he's about exactly where Hughes thought he'd be at this point, an upgrade at forward for the AHL squad with some, albeit minimal, NHL upside. Acquired 1 for 1 for Hammond (who was previously acquired for Braddock), so net is a more talented and younger AHL asset.

Smilanic was acquired as a "B" prospect add-in to the 1st & 4th we got for Chiarot... while he didn't excel, he didn't exactly take a step back after the trade in the spring and if anything the move to Wisconsin bodes well for his ongoing development. the value (1st/b prospect/4th) for Chiarot was pretty good, even if Smilanic does stagnate. At this point, he's still a decent prospect with some upside... the influx of talented forward prospects Hughes added in the summer (Slaf/Mesar/Beck/Rohrer + Dach to the NHL roster) changed the road ahead of him, but as far as the asset he represents, i doubt there's any buyer's remorse at this point.

Schnarr was a 1-for-1 versus Hammond!

Smilinac SHOULD be worth less than Heineman since Toffoli had lots more value than Chiarot.

All this talk of which was the main piede and which the throw-in is a red herring because Hughes was not trading Toffoli for less than two main pieces.

I would have had no problem with what the poster stated. There are a lot of blow hards who come out and try to state fact. When they don't have a clue what they're talking about. My issue is where the poster states that any person who felt Heineman was a "toss in" was clueless.

I did spend more than 15 mins on the Calgary board. Reading over different reactions. The majority I read showed me that they didn't really care about the loss of Heineman. They were more grateful that they didn't lose one of their more valuable prospects. It wasn't until a couple of days later, when I had more time. That I looked into him closer. I still wasn't overly impressed, but still happy with the trade. Now that I've gotten to see him as a Hab. I like him, and can see where some of our fans were very happy with the trade.

As for the POS comment. I dislike anyone who tries to come across as better than someone else. You can get your point across without being a dick.
I guess now you learned not to trust HFboards eh 😂

Perhaps my choice of words is not always conducive to civil discourse but I am of the belief that to engage in compromise from a position of empirical truth is to be complicit in the emboldening of poor behaviour that places personal bias/groupthink before evidence.

Since I heard about the trade long before HuGo's comments. I didn't have that information to go on. When a trade happens involving a player or prospect I don't know. I automatically go to the board we're receiving the player from. In this case Calgary.

When I did hear HuGo's comments, I did feel better. But as I said earlier, that was after hearing about the trade. It wasn't until later did I find out that he was initially traded from Florida to Calgary.

On our board, it seemed the initial reaction was "Who?". With a few posters, I'll include you, who seemed happy with getting Heineman in the trade.

So to try and end this here. My reaction to the trade was inconclusive because A I didn't know the player. B I didn't have access to the quotes from Hughes and the Calgary GM when he obtained him. I just went with what I knew, and what I had read.

To semi quote Michael Jordan "You included me when you said "all fans" and I took it personal"

lol...Sorry, I'm always crabby when my wife is late with dinner. ;)
Learn how to cook, then, and stop being so sexist by stereotyping her as the supper maker ( unless, of course, she went for take-out ;) )

I hope it is clear I was kidding.

Too bad a young promising player like Heineman won't make the team because of all of the current dead weight.
I know you can't send them all through waivers but it would send a message to see one vet waived.
Heineman has a chance but he will have to really show well in hopefully at least two more games. I don't think Sweden is the best place for him.

Why ? it's a great league for him to continue improving. Personally, I have no problem with going back in Sweden for a last season improving his game. He will have a spot with us next season
If he were in Laval, Heineman would be playing on a North American ice surface rather than buring an ELC year on an international ice surface.

Also, the Habs do not control his usage or his development in Sweden.

The problem is that to keep him in North America, the Habs have to have him on the NHL roster so he needs to show well this week.

I don’t disagree that the best would have been to keep him with Laval but we know that’s not an option. I trust the Sweden league for Heineman development

Who cares if an ELC year is used if the player ends up developing into better player. Playing in the NHL ASAP will help him get accustomed to NHL faster was de la Rose development mantra too. Players can develop in SHL and jump straight to NHL, happens a lot. Rushing a player to NHL before they actually had a chance to have high production in a lower pro league tends to result in more DLR/Mete situations than not.

I wonder if Similac and Schnarr were throw ins or if Hughes overestimated them.

Schnarr was strictly an AHL acquisition whereas Smilanic was targeted by Hughes as he has known him for a while and with his connections to USA hockey was very aware of how much of a force he was as a 15 and 16 year old.

Having spent alot of time around the OHL and GTHL I know how some kids who looked dominant in midget/bantam remain on your radar especially when they struggle and their stock drops. Hughes definitely targeted Smilanic based on how dominant he was and could potentially be again. He did talk about his connection to Smilanic immediately after the trade so I am sure it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Did he get hurt last night? Noticed he only had 7 minutes. I was at wrestling, so I didn't see the game.
