He does seem more like a real prospect after seeing him play. You always assume this kind of player tossed in a trade is never going to sniff the NHL. He seems like he may have a real middle-six future.

That is an exaggeration. Very few of the bad contracts over $4.5M we have had over the past 30 years were for French Canadians.

Price latest, Gallagher latest, ALZNER, Hoffman, Petry latest come to mind.
Whether to a greater or lesser degree, to deny that linguistic considerations impact the team’s on and off office personnel decisions is to be willfully blind. Its a factor and handicap that no other team has to address and circumvent.

I said you exaggerated, not that you had no point.

By the way, I think the limitations have been way more at the coach level than the player level.

One could argue that the off ice hirings have had a greater detrimental effect on the team’s success than the on ice ones.

Definitely showing good signs but you can see there are some bad puck decisions still in offensive zone. Can't wait to see if he can be among the top scorers in the SHL. Wouldn't it be sweet to see Habs prospects at the top of multiple leagues (OHL/QMJHL/NCAA/AHL/SHL...no chance for Liiga/KHL/WHL)

Sorry if I shou;d know this or it’s in the thread somewhere but cou;d he come back any time from shl if the habs have a spot?

I'm not surprised. Toffoli had great trade value and it was not just some 1st and meh prospect return. This kid has game and he's physically strong with great skating. Might not be a play making winger but he is certainly going to be strong on the forecheck and chip in on goals here and there. Type you can plug in on any line.
Actually, since I didn't know anything about him and only went by what I read. That's exactly what I thought we were getting. Add in the fact that Montreal is now his third team. I not only thought he was "Meh" but thought there might be red flags surrounding him as well. I enjoy being pleasantly surprised, and Emil has definitely done that so far.

When I read the name Heineman…..

Exact same here. Thought we were getting another DeLaRose 2nd rounder that 2 teams had given up on.

I’m very happy now.

There were no red flags. No way Hughes was trading a value contract for more than one season to the Flames for a late 1st and a meh prospect. Third team? That's because teams wanted him in the futures return. Flames wanted him for Bennett and Habs wanted him for Toffoli.

When I watched video on him after the Toffoli trade, I started to like him more and more. You can clearly see he is physically strong, skates well, and had a good shot. Hard worker type.

Oh I agree with you. Since I'd had no prior knowledge of him. All I could go by is what I read. Florida fans didn't have anything special to say about him. Neither did Calgary fans. So until I got a chance to see video of him, that's all I could go by.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but at practice, the other group of players that won't play tonight (and presumably will tomorrow night)

Caufield - Suzuki - Armia
Pitlick - Beck - Ylonen
RHP - Evans - Heineman
Pezzetta - Mesar - Richard
Stephens

Guhle - Savard
Norlinder - Wideman
Harris - Mailloux (obviously won't play)

Montembeault - Primeau
They should just put Heineman with Suzuki instead of Armia. Or Mesar.

It is this assumption that he was "tossed" into the trade that has always been the problem. Hughes himself said that they were adamant about getting Heineman. He was also the main piece in the Sam Bennett deal which is why Calgary didn't want to give him up.

We've heard that from every GM though. I remember when Ian Schultz was a "piece they wanted" in the Halak trade.

Hughes made a point of stating how important Heineman was to this deal. When you couple that with the fact that Calgary had just traded Bennett with Heineman as the main piece of their return it certainly provides a ton of credibility to Hughes statement.

Obviously when you ask a GM about any player that they acquire in a trade they are going to say something positive. In Heineman's case fans were underwhelmed because they didn't know who he was and he wasn't a 1st round pick.

There is overwhelming evidence that supports the fact that Hughes targeted Heineman and zero evidence that Heineman was a "toss in" so to arbitrarily label him as such seem to point to confirmation bias as the main culprit here.
