VAN
Elias Pettersson ($11.6M AAV - UFA 2032)

for

SJS
1st Round Pick (1st Overall)

----------

Why the Canucks do it:
Gives them major cap relief which will allow them to sign Lindholm and extend Boeser who is due for a big raise in a few years while also bringing in Aidan's brother with the first overall pick.

Why the Sharks do it:
Speeds up their rebuild significantly and can be a team where Petey thrives as the leader and joins fellow Swedes in Eklund and Zetterlund. They have plenty of cap room to make it work and still have Pittsburgh's 1st.
Someone doesn't understand the cap.

Right, just like the Oilers were contenders in McDavid's first season, Crosby with the Pens, Ovy with the Caps, and Bedard with the Hawks. Even with Celebrini, that roster is a joke. Just accept the fact that teams have different strategies on how they want to build out and your little minnows have taken the Arizona/Buffalo route. Good luck with that.

You're not getting Celebrini for a proven playoff choker. Last thing this board needs is some ill-informed homer with 55 total posts making proposal threads for trolling purposes. Stop it.

While I agree this trade makes no sense either way, calling a player a playoff choker based on one years playoffs is just as egregious as calling out someone as ill informed based on their post totals.

I don't even really think of the bubble playoffs as playoffs, but he was a ppg through those and generally viewed as a key cog in their team.

a first overall draft pick has not been traded in 25 years, and the last time it happened it was generally considered one of the worst trades in NHL history and single handedly destroyed a franchise. Canucks fans oughta know, they're the ones who benefited from it.

That is never going to happen again. Not for Pettersson. Not even for McDavid or Bedard.

Yeah so let’s trade our cost controlled, future franchise C for an older, more expensive player to surround our crap roster with. Now you’re cooking with gas.

I’ll trade you #14 for EP40.

Please, oh wise constructor of cap compliant rosters, educate us on how exchanging a cost controlled Celebrini for Pettersson materially accelerates the Sharks rebuild.

And while we’re out here slinging unnecessary arrows, I’m not sure Canucks fans have much of a leg to stand on to look down on the Sharks, what with both parties… checks notes… zero cup wins.

Calm down, chief.

Pretty standard progression of dude asks for feedback on a nonsensical and comically lopsided trade offer that favors his team, dude gets rejected, dude pretends that we were the ones who were begging for the trade to happen and proceeds to the childish name-calling.

Art mimics life, etc.

Don't see a real need for Pettersson when you're in line to have Celebrini.

I'm sure Celebrini will never be as good as Jack Hughes, and it took Hughes 3 years to become a PPG+ player. Pettersson already has 100+ point season. With EP40 Sharks will immediately get a star who's still 25, that's the reason. The question is do they need such a player in the next 2-3 seasons or not.

And does Vancouver need to trade their star center for a kid.

Last I checked it wasn't a Sharks fan creating this thread. It's pretty clear that EP40 has worn out his welcome with the fans and they're trying to pawn him off for anything they can get, when cap dumps such as him end up getting negative returns.

Typical HFBoards shit moderation. This thread was, from the start, only going to lead to vitriol from both sides.

Mods...close threads before they get caustic...discourse isn't democracy...sometimes it's just trolling and baiting...when in doubt. SHUTERDOWN

Are we discussing the probability of the trade or Vancouver and San Jose fans opinions?

The Sharks desperately need a shot of excitement. Something to help sell tickets. Get the fans buzzing. Having the 1st overall with a prospect like Celebrini has already made a splash. As good as Pettersson is, bringing in a vet, just doesn't move the needle as much

If Ep40 is such a star why are Vancouver fans eager to trade him?

YIKES! Why on earth would a rebuilding team trade a top notch prospect for a much older player who fits their timeline in no way???????????????

San Jose Sharks say no. They're trying to build a young team based around Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Musty, Bystedt, Mukhamadullin, Thrun, Chrona, and some other kids and picks that will turn into kids. Elias Pettersson will be slowing down in the next 4 to 8 years and retiring in the next 12-ish years. Most of the new young group in San Jose won't be slowing down from aging for the next decade. They won't be retiring for 15 to 20 years.

When you have elite players, you want them to be as young as possible so that your team can stay elite for as long as possible. There's no reason to trade Celebrini for a comparable player who is 7 or 8 years older.
This.

No thanks to Pettersen. I'd rather have Celebrini
