Star players have stretches of bad play but playing all your minutes with MacKinnon, Rantanen or Cale Makar kind of ensures you are still getting points.

Well Petey was playing with some good players doing his noticeable slump.

Star players find a way to put up points because they do manage to make plays that lead to points. Like Stamkos scoring a PP goal in the Cup finals. Petey has actually put up points in the past despite not looking his best. Thats how star players rack up points. They put points when they aren’t their best then have a couple of hot stretches and at the end their numbers look fine. It’s not trophy winning performance but at the end for the day you are paying your stars to come up big when it matters.

I honestly think Garland is not the right linemate for him. I have no data to back this up other than from what I’ve seen on the ice, but Petey looked way better when he’s tasked with being the main puck driver.

Garland as a temporary solution was fine just to get Petey going a bit but it’s seems to me Petey is about 60-70% back into form again. I want to see him with Lekkerimaki but that doesn’t look like to be the case for now. Another guy is Heinen.

here's the thing with Garland... a player that gets called a 20-goal scorer in the off-season never gets to be called a 20 goal season in season... In-season they get called 'streaky.'

What would really put these chemistry discussions to rest is if one of the 20 goal crew of Joshua, Hoglander, Garland, Debrusk or even Suter could raise their game and make a permanent home on Petey's wing as a 30 goal guy. Boeser went out and did that so no one is worried about who Miller has chemistry with anymore.

Petey will look good with anyone once he starts to play like he can.

The fact is that Petey's game started to ramp up pretty much at the exact time he was put on Garland's line.

Lekk could be a fit if he sticks, we're far away from that.

Heinen we've already seen in a top 6 role. His strength is likely winning a matchup lower in the lineup as the 3rd line has been doing for the most part.

Joshua - Pettersson - Garland ought to be Joshua - Blueger - Garland except much better.

For what it’s worth, Garland and Pettersson have outscored their opponents 24-14 when on the ice together at ES the last three years. Both have slightly better CF%/GF%/xGF% playing together than when apart. Not showing amazing chemistry that makes the whole much greater than the parts but also not obviously hurting one another.

But given they should both be play drivers, with Boeser out and Miller struggling it may make sense to split them up. Will be interesting to see how aggressively Tocchet line matches tomorrow.

While it might not work given they’re both at their best I’d still like to see Pettersson and Miller together while Boeser is out. Let Garland have his own line again. Garland had chemistry with Suter before and was working with Hogs earlier as well.

I also wonder about trying Hoglander-Miller-DeBrusk together, who looked decent once Boeser went down. If that line does well and you can let Boeser and Petey get some run.

Yes. Joshua will need to get up to speed, but I would give that line a look. Especially if Heien - Blueger - Sherwood keeps cooking.

The hope is that it would be an even higher-end version of Garland - Blueger - Joshua.

Hoglander and Suter on the 4th line is a nice edge in the bottom-six.

I've never liked the Pettersson-Garland fit. Two puck-dominant guys, it's made sense for now as Pettersson as struggled to start the year, but at their best I think those two together is less than the sum of its parts.
