Player Discussion Elias Lindholm

Elias turned 30 yesterday. 30 is when NHlers, on the average, start to regress quickly with age. We have him for this year plus six more full ones after. Full NMC until the last couple years where it drops to an NTC.

He’s been fine defensively, but for near $8M AAV to age 37, I sure hope he finds his offensive game soon before the regression really sets in.

You are right, I think Marchand has slowed down a bit, he is not awful, but he is certainly not the guy we are use too. Brazeau, I have mixed feelings, I know he has put a lot of hard work to get there, and you have to pull for the guy, but he is not a second liner, and I have my doubts he is a NHL player, not meant to be harsh. Lindholm just does not move the needle for me, maybe if his contract was not such an anchor, I would feel differently.
When the new CBA is negotiated, will there be one buyout that doesn't go against the cap? If so, there is your buyout.

If it gets negotiated into the CBA, and Lindholm isn't having a lingering injury that is causing his mediocre play this year, they will use it and if its Charlie Jacobs left, I doubt he fires Sweeney for it.

He has scored many goals over the years in front of the net. I don't see that player in Boston

Personally I don't believe this to be as true anymore, peaks are being pushed with all the nutritionists, trainers etc, these guys have. And depending on their style, especially guys who don't rely on speed or physicality, they can be good players into the mid 30s before dropping off.

In the points hierarchy of the team, he's where you want to see him as the third leading point scorer of the team. But almost to a man, the points are less than expected. We definitely need to see more from Lindholm, especially with getting pucks on the net. He's averaging over 18 minutes a game over 26 games and only has 35 shots on the season. That is not good. Hopefully the philosophy change from Monty to Sacco will see an increase on shots on goal ( I think it has for the team as a whole ). His defensive work is very good and he's reliable enough at the dot.

Happy to see him getting his point a game sort of pace.

But I was really disappointed in his d zone coverage on one of the goals last night. He's not supposed to make that mistake. I'm expecting by year's end, he won't.

Elias, can you kindly step up your game a little bit. We are all loving you and supporting you we got your back bro.

We want the Stanley cup

I've never considered Lindholm to be an offense player, but more of a solid two way 200 foot player strong in all zones, more along the pace of about .75 - .90 point per game average. He brings a stabilizing presence to the center ice position and will not hurt the team with his play.
Those who expect him to be an offensive juggernaut are going to be disappointed, it's not his game,he's not going to 'wow' anybody.
What he lacks in offense he more than makes up for in other areas of his game.
However, his game does translate very well into playoff hockey where checking is very tight and making the smart play is always important.
He does not get overmatched very easily.

Not sure why they ever envisioned him with Pasta. They're both volume shooters. Funny enough, I think Lindholm would've worked well on the wing with Krejci.

I think they envisioned a net front guy who could help them get out of their own zone easily. That's what I pictured anyway.

I watched a lot of Vancouver in the playoffs and he was super competitive, won battles along the walls, scored on tips and rebounds, made smart, short passes around the goal... those qualities are what made Bertuzzi effective on that line, but Bert was weak defensively and that was his achilles heel. I thought Lindholm would help them in both zones.

Obviously it didn't work out in reality.

I'm not worried, he's snake bitten right now but working hard and smart. Yup he's not flashy but he's dependable in all zones. It'll click offensively at some point. I'm sure it's eating him up somewhat, he'll settle. Was a beast last playoffs for Vancouver,

Coming in peace as a Flames fan after a Boston fan was gauging interest from Flames fans about trading Lindholm to us.

Unfortunately, that .75-.90 ppg pace has never been his average. He's a guy who has broken 50 points in the league 4 times in his career (and 60 points 3 times). His two good years (74 points, and 82 points) both came when the rest of his line also had career years, and both years he was the lowest scorer on the line (When he had 74 points, Gaudreau had 99 points and Monahan had 82 points. When he had 82 points, Gaudreau had 115 points, and Tkachuk had 104 points).

The key to getting him going would be pairing him with an offensive focused player, and a guy who is incredibly good within 10 feet of the net (Monahan did his best work close in despite not really being a "crash and bang" netfront guy, while Tkachuk would create absolute chaos in front of the net consistently). Every time he doesn't play with those kind of guys, he puts up closer to 45 points. BUT he is generally really strong defensively and doesn't hurt the team when he's playing with high-skill guys.

Thanks for the replies on your board.

Unfortunately, that's what we've been doing. He plays with Marchand (offense focused player) and Brazeau (who is really good around the net) but the offense still isn't there.

If he's just going to be a defensive, 40 point forward then we're using him wrong and that contract is a problem.
