If this was the case he would have been traded in the off season just like Trouba and PLD were when Chevy knew they would play out the season on the way to UFA status.

Not at all. I just think he's ready for a new chapter. You can be proud of what you've accomplished in one place and love the people you've done it with, while still wanting a new challenge and new opportunity.
Unless he couldn't find a deal. It takes two to tango.

I said eastern conference, not east coast, so that constitutes 16 teams. Of those, there are only a few with LWs who produce more (points/game) than Nik. Those that do, are given considerably more ice time. In fact, somewhat surprisingly, Ehlers still ranks only 44th in TOI/G for left wingers.

Chevy could be in a tough spot when it comes to Ehlers. Let’s say Nik is offer sheeted $ 10 mil, or its deemed by other players, he’s worth that.
It be very hard for Chevy to pay him $ 9.5 mil or higher, when Helle and Scheifele are only making $ 8.5 mil. It could turn out to be a very difficult deal to make, and not upset other star players.

Point per game always seemed like a faulty stat as it doesn’t take into account the ability to stay healthy is huge.
Either way love what I see from him look forward to the real test which is playoffs.

Ehlers is not going to get offer sheeted because he is not an RFA and it's unlikely Chevy waits until free agency period before offering Ehlers a new contract if he hasn't already (they may just be waiting to see what the new salary cap will be before finalizing)
If I had to guess, I think he is offered something like an 8x8m or possibly even matching Scheifs and Helly, then KFC will come in later at around 9-10m or maybe with luck also signs for the same because he loves us so much.

One of the Joys of being a Jets fan is finding peace in knowing I have zero idea what Chevy is going to do most of the time. The Schiefele Hellybuyck suprise deals were the finish line for me as a phatom GM and where I felt fully emancipated from my imaginary role.

He’s about a 5 minute Seadoo ride from my place so maybe I will swing over this summer, I’m sure he would love the pop in lol.

I don't think they trade him. I think A) They let him walk after the play offs or B) The re-sign him. I think he is essentially a self rental.
Ehlers doesn't seem like a wise self rental, due to his history of disappearing in the playoffs. I think it is much more likely that something happens before the TDL. A signing or a trade.
Jets will definitely push hard to get him re-signed before the deadline. May even have to use the threat of a deal to help expedite a decision... still optimistic we can get him signed around then like Buff was back in the day.
The Jets have always shown loyalty to a fault to their players. I can't see Chevy not giving him something he is willing to sign. Ehlers has always been a team first guy I can't see him leaving if he has a good offer and some assurances in his favour.
Chevy did say fairly clearly that he's not had any contract discussions.
Apparently Friedman or someone said the Jets were going to review their situation during the 4 Nations break, when they have more clarity about the future cap levels.
I think the Jets are willing to pay him, but, if he is like his fans who think he is capable of 90-100 points if he got top line minutes then why would he stay? So how does he feel about his situation? Is he okay not being on the top line and being the man? Does he care about the stats? Does he feel disrespected, as the players who showed loyalty to the Jets, possibly never felt as underutilized as he does. The Jets want to be loyal, but, they have their pecking order and have shown that they view other players ahead of him. They have shown they will give Stanley and KFC the cream of usage whether they deserve it or not and not him.

if ehlers is traded, id think itd be for a similar fwd of similar contract status aka pending ufa so the same spot we're in now essentially. if that's the case, i think the Jets keep the guy they have and have had familiarity with. i can see a contract signed/announcement after the PO before UFA, however personally don't think they do anything in-season.
Friedman indicated that the Avs had offered Rantanen around $12M and it was too low. So he might have been okay with a discount, but it still seemed too rich for the Avs who don't want to tie up so much in 3 players.
This might have implications for the Jets. Teams that miss out on Rantanen or Marner might go hard after Ehlers, who is likely going to be a much more economical option. That could include the Avs, Leafs, Canes, Habs, etc.

He is a guy who will score a point a game or more when he is healthy And plays top line and PP1. Maybe more if he was with the right center?
Has injury history and has disappeared in the playoffs more than any star should. So adds risk for sure.
The fact he would be Tampa's #1 LW was my first cause for alarm... could tune out all the BS, take a discount (comparatively) to make the same take home, and play on a team with a cup winning pedigree. That was the first pretty appealing marriage I saw.
Carolina if they miss out on signing Rantanen may be another nice fit where the weather is milder and the team is good and values him for what he is.
He definitely has some options, just hoping he wants to be a part of winning a cup here.
Chevy's leverage is now. He can offer Ehlers an 8th year of term, if he wants. Also, with so many Eastern teams likely interested, I wonder if he could work on a sign and trade to give a team a leg up. Of course, Ehlers would need to want to play in that market. The 8th year would be part of the enticement, if the other team wants to snag Ehlers.
Jets don't need to get a roster player, because they could flip future assets to get the type of player they want to fill the line-up.
I wonder if Dubas and the Pens might have an interest in one more push. Ehlers via trade and then Marner as a UFA in the summer? That's just an example if Chevy doesn't have plans or optimism to re-sign Ehlers.
