Longer the season goes and their is no extension I think the writing will be on the wall and Chevy needs to move him, this organization cannot afford to let UFA's like Ehlers walk for free. I prefer we re sign him but if he wants out he wants out
On the other hand, it's unlikely the Jets go very far in this promising season without Ehlers contribution at 5v5 and now on PP1.

He is in a very strong bargaining position; the rumours are just going to escalate over the year but so will his value if he stays healthy. Good on him--he has handled himself with class over his entire tenure here and deserves the opportunity to play on a team that will utilize his full potential. The Jets can finally make a better case that they are doing so, but is it too little, too late?

Is he in the driver's seat? How many teams want a player who can't stay healthy? Vs if he had just signed at beginning of season team is willing to pay a bit more as they have less questions about his health.

Peaked my attention listening to Bowness on HNIC talk about Ehlers past frustration with ice time, pp time and linemates. Will this season with Arniel change anything in that respect and keep him a Jet. I am on “Can’t lose him for nothing side” but that’s a tough one for Chevy.
He's career low in mins/gp but is on pp1. I can't see the Jets trading him in-season, and the Jets have signed pending UFA late in the year, so hoping for that. If he leaves for ufa it is what it is. It wouldn't be the Jets have had a player leave for ufa.

Chevy has never let a player as valuable as Ehlers walk out the door of free agency. I’m guessing there is a plan in place to sign him by a certain date or he will make a hockey trade. I think the option of a TDL futures only package unlikely and an own rental even less likely.

Yup, I also think that Chevy already knows if Nik wants to be here long term and if he does will get a deal done, if he doesn't then will look for the best deal possible before the deadline.

Agreed.

I'm not sure the Jets see Ehlers in their long term plans. They have always seemed to have a love/hate relationship with him for whatever reason.

It's really to bad because he is a very good player for this team but if he doesn't want to be here then cut the cord and move on.

Chevy makes trades when the player doesn’t want be here. Ehlers never says he wants out and seems to a player that wants to play with the Jets I’m sure Chevy going to do his best to sign him but I’m prepared that he may walk into UFA We do have Lambert and Chib to take his place if that happens
How much value are you getting in a trading a player going to UFA ? We not sellers at TD We can use Ehlers as our own rental if that’s the case

There is no hard an fast line before July 1 - but I think that if he isn't signed by mid Jan it isn't going to happen.

Yeah Ehlers isn't going anywhere, the team is in first place.

If there was some kind of wild hockey trade like the CGY-FLA Tkachuk trade then maybe. But the team isn't selling him odd when we are first place in the NHL.

I think there will be a big push to extend him before the trade deadline. Like you said though Mort, end of June is the true deadline.

The real question would be how would we be able to fit both Connor and Ehlers under the cap, I dont see a realistic outlook on that.

Ehlers will warrant $8M per year Minimum.
Connor $9-10+M per year, maybe more?

Haven't read anything in this thread but Ehlers is my Fav but I don't care You don't lose a player like that for nothing, trade at deadline if we can't keep him. Period.

I agree - but I see very slim chances of that happening unless they can flip him for a 2C with term. No point in trading a rental for a rental so there has to be team control. I would prefer a top 4 RHD, but I'm pretty sure Chevy will want a 2C, just based on history.

RFA vs UFA in terms of the comparison to Tkaachuk player's rights for UFA doesn't really garner much at all. ehlers is really carrying the load offensively for his line this year.

I hope you're right but it looks more and more like own rental to me.

Agreed. But also feels like one of those January trades if he won't sign, rather than a deadline deal. Gives Chevy a chance to line up related moves.

I feel if he was going to sign it would of happened already, he seems happy enough here but he might want to play elsewhere for reasons only he would know about. For some players playing for the best team in the league is not enough.

Someone already said it, but not signing Pionk gets you 3/4 of the way there.

Iafallo likely too pricey to keep for a 4th line role. That's $10M for two guys that combined don't give you as much value as 60 games of Ehlers.

Not even a debate for me which is more valuable, but I'm sure others may feel differently.

I'm sorry but people who think this team will be better without Pionk are out to lunch. All the Ehlers hype after a 3 point night. But how did that comeback goal happen? That was Pionk leading the rush putting the puck behind the Sens net that started that play. Take away his work on the PK that game and tell me that's easily replaceable. 22 minutes a night is a lot of ice time to replace.

Pionk at $2m fine. At whatever he is going to ask for? Forget about. you are the one that is out to lunch.

I'd have to think Chevy is chewing on this dilemma as we speak.
It gets you thinking - maybe this is why Ville is slotting in on his off wing.
I'm just spit ballin' here because I'm bored - if they were to let Pionk walk, they need to replace him and hoping they can find a top 4 RHD via the open market is a long shot.
Ehlers drives that second line - and probably will continue to drive it even if we pick up another center - and he's good at it.

Look at other teams with their big contracts, some of them already several years old. Accommodating those contracts really won't be all that hard. It might mean parting with some mid sized contracts to make a little room. Pionk and Iafallo spring to mind.

It means promoting prospects on ELCs or bridge deals.

Don't disagree there. There will be some hard choices.

Pionk has been better this year then he has been since his last contract year. If we keep him, I hope he keeps it up.
