Tough to lose after Helle made some key saves but we played terrible that game.

I’m happy the team was frustrated, I hope it sits with them over the break so they come back hungry and salivating

Overall though, a few years ago we would have been happy to have 4 game win streaks like this. Team has come a long way let’s not dwell on the negatives too much

  • Jets are a good team but as we've seen with too many teams in the NHL these days, none are good enough to play only 20 minutes to play 'inspired' hockey. Let's not forget after a decent third period that the first two were awful by most accounts as Maurice probably deservedly laid into them during the intermission for going on their break too early. They're still a top team in the NHL but you can't have that bad an off-night.
  • Hellebuyck as a result had been dealing with obscured vision and deflections through the middle all game, and in the first two periods let in 3 in a barrage of Stars' dominated play. In the 3rd, he had to deal with breakaway after breakaway when the ice opened up and Jets players took more risks and kept them all out, with the exception of yet another tipped knuckler that bounced over his glove as he reached to grab where it was going before the puck began to flutter. I don't envy the goalie position when dealing with that kind of game.
  • Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler were getting pushed and bruised all night and have been for the past little while, and probably have been waiting for this player's and all-star break forever to get some recovery. That being said, even if they did pick it up and started to break even in the third period, it wasn't nearly enough to move the needle in terms of xGF, which is where you'd expect it to move the most with the caliber of players on the ice. Hopefully the break does good for them.
  • Laine-Little-Roslovic were the only ones really generating any real offense during the lifeless first period and parade to the penalty box the second and continued that for an extended effort in the third. Laine seems to be a few inches off getting his game back as Little quietly keeps grooving along what he does well, but lost many faceoffs tonight when they needed them to drive the offense more. That being said, it's no secret that Laine works much better with someone else doing the play driving, and even if he started showing a little more of it the previous few games, he's at his best with your Scheifele's and Stastny's versus your Little's. Chevy has work to do here if Maurice isn't going to solve it internally.
  • Perreault-Lowry-Tanev had another off-game for the second game in a row, and yet again the problem seems to be that they aren't generating offense as much as they were preventing against their competition. They're so quiet on the ice most of the time that I honestly am not visually by my sightings for what is going on here.
  • Appleton-Copp-Lemieux - the 4th line is often known as the energy line, and they certainly tried bringing the energy tonight to the bored Jets in the 3rd. Lemieux skated around the Stars players that were standing too still and made Bishop move too much laterally to leave the fivehole wide open - good on him. The problem now is: which is the real Lemieux? Appleton skated around in a fury and Copp was quietly the best centre the Jets had tonight in faceoffs and xG, and second-best for generating shots towards the net.
  • Morrissey-Trouba did their jobs tonight, carrying most of the load in terms of offense (xG) as well. While neither of them are individually all-stars, together they certainly are an all-star pairing - but luckily they don't need to go sign autographs and play meaningless skill-games, so they can take a well-deserved break.
  • Kulikov-Myers... oof. Kulikov usually does a tiny bit better than Myers as he gets time away from Myers after the PP2 is on the ice and often prevents chances against in terms of xG, but both of them were pretty disastrous all night long. Myers was on the ice for all four goals against as well. His presence on the penalty kill, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired for - he's not using his size.
  • Morrow-Niku - after Morrow's terrific game the previous night, he reverted to the game previous to that and led many of the Jets questionable calls against. Niku seems to be growing in Maurice's trust as he gets more minutes in quirky situations (4v4) but hard to play a game when you've nearly sat the entire 2nd because of penalty trouble. He deserves to stay in the lineup and I hope he gets time with Byfuglien as a second-pairing to show his worth.
  • The powerplay has lost it's creativity from last year and lost its spark from this year (read: Wheeler). Back to the drawing board for Jamie Kompon for the next week or two.
Chief's final eyetest says: does anyone even know what truly is a penalty these days? Oof, some of those calls were more than questionable. I appreciate the effort to talk it out with the players after, but yikes. EDIT: To clarify, they were questionable for both teams.

0.897, to be consistent.

Horrible first 2 periods, decent 3rd. Not enough. But I'm reasonably happy to say the 4th line showed life and that's what we're going to need in the postseason.

I'm off to enjoy more of the Banff nightlife.

Observations:

Dallas with 2 PP goals. Both high tips. Traffic to the net can be just as effective as big shots. We don't have that wrinkle in our PP. Kind of night where sticking Lemieux in the goalie's kitchen might have given us a chance. He can tip pucks better than anyone. Can't say he didn't earn a shot... Trouba is not a replacement for Buff, on the top unit. If anything him being out there, is making Scheifele less of an option because tonight Dallas had two guys on either side of him. I think Myers is much more of a threat to shoot, and will attack too. Credit to Dallas though. If I remember Montgomery as a player, he was a defensive one.
Laine killed the PP more than anyone. Just terrible with his puck control. More practice less Fortnite kid. A lot more practice to become multidimensional. Still, the guy doesn't play well and could have scored a couple. He's pushing too hard to score. Someone should tell him to just go to the net and get and ugly one.

I noticed Maurice tried Copp with Scheifele for a kill on their first shift. A chance to rest Wheeler? Gave up a goal, so you know what Jay and Dan would say...
It's unfortunate because you could see the energy level wasn't high in Wheeler tonight, and being able to rest him on the kill would help. Connor on the other hand looks like a real threat on the PK, which is positive.

Lemieux was fantastic. He's becoming more of a power forward every game played. Making a case to stay in the lineup. He was the player who matched the intensity of the game, which we sorely needed. He and Appleton were all over the boards.

Lowry's line a bit of a dud. Lowry was pretty good. Perreault was not impressive to me, at all. Yet he and Little have something together, which I wish Maurice would try to get going.

Defensively I liked Kulikov's game. Just watching how smart he is.
Niku had good jump. I thought he would be worse paired with Myers, which Maurice went to a few times, and they did give up 2 breakaways I think, but there was some positives.
Maybe not Myers best game, but the forwards weren't smart positionally tonight, at times, which exposed our defense a bit. Morrissey had some jump too.

Fell short on the comeback, but at least battled. Dallas needed this game more than we did, and I think it showed at times. I will say that the bad ice negated a lot of skill with the puck, and that's something this team has to adapt to, the game in the trenches.

The reffing at the end was pretty bad. Wish they had just ate the whistle. That's how she goes though.

I’m just so frustrated with Hellebuyck. Sure he makes some saves but what’s the point when you let in three stoppable goals. I have no confidence when he’s playing. A goal can go in on any shot from anywhere.

Post-game audio:

Players: Wheeler, Scheifele & Hellebuyck.

Coach Maurice scrum topics: Assessment of the first 40 minutes. Why did the Stars have the advantage in the first 40 minutes? The mileage they got out of Tyler Myers. On the power play calls against. Where did that start come from? Happy with Hellebuyck's game going into the break?

QT....

Terrible game by the Jets, despite the push-back in the 3rd. Seemed like they were already on their break.

CSW - Awful first two periods by Scheifele and Wheeler. They looked distracted and disinterested. If they are supposed to "drive the bus", they left it in park tonight.

LLR - I thought Laine had a decent game overall, but he's really fumbling the puck at inopportune times. He's clearly frustrated and needs a break, I guess. Little tried hard, but the details of his game were off. Missed on a number of passes. Roslovic didn't do much.

PLT - Uncharacteristically poor game from Perreault. I hardly noticed him, except when he was making a head-scratching play. He was a mess on the PP. I thought Lowry had a decent game, and Tanev kept working hard.

LCA - Another really good game for this line. The only line that seemed ready to play. Lemieux is showing a bit more poise, at least in the offensive zone. He still struggles with decision making in his own zone. Appleton forechecked really well, and Copp was generally good in all three zones.

44-8 Trouba was really bad on the PP. He looked a bit sluggish, and didn't deal with pressure very well. Morrissey with another solid effort.

5-57 Meh game for this pair. Interesting to see Niku paired with Myers. Makes you wonder if Maurice was thinking about trying this combo as a third pair in the future. Certainly seemed that Niku was getting the nod over Morrow in the third, maybe to generate some offense.

83-70 Okay game, I guess. Niku got pushed around a bit in the D zone, but he's really smart with the puck and moves it well. Morrow continues to underwhelm in his own zone - just no intensity.

Hellebuyck was under seige most of the first two periods, and I thought he kept the Jets in the game at times. Couldn't really blame him on any of the goals except maybe Comeau's (but Scheifele just stood around on that one and game him a free pass to the crease).

Overall, I think the Jets have handled this tough stretch without Buff and Ehlers rather well. Looking forward to the stretch drive.

Yup ... I don't get upset when the Jets lose now a days. I know they have a good team and if they lose no big deal. I only saw the second half of the game and it was clear they get not get the bounces ... **** happens. I know in a 7 game series Stars have no chance.

Interesting post-game presser by PoMo. Seems like he wants the team to go off into the break on a positive note.
