You should of course parse that as Baz Luhrman reference to connect my intended tone to his song, and from there, the tone of the underlying Desiderata.
So the next time Scheifele gets slashed in the face and Wheeler is given a high sticking penalty for it we should all be fine with it ?
Alright, so here's my likely star-crossed effort to be the voice of reason against the hounding mob:
Two road games against the #2 and #3 teams in the division and we split, beating the better of the two and even finishing with a positive goal differential.
Fun fact: even if you're a 70:30 favorite against each team, you're still likelier to NOT win them both than you are to sweep them both.
So yes, this game -- sordid tragedy it clearly was -- represented part of going 4 out of our last 5 and 7-3-0 in our last ten, all while still missing some pretty big f'n pieces.
The team is doing fine. Very well, in fact. Many more ups than downs.
Success in an individual event cannot be assured through force of will alone. That's why "he HAS to make that save" is bunk.
Success in an individual game cannot be assured through force of will alone. That's why "this is a MUST WIN game" is bunk.
Success in an individual series cannot be assured through force of will alone. That's why "there's no way the '82 Oilers could lose to the Kings" is bunk.
Success in an individual tournament cannot be assured through force of will alone. That's why "failing to win the Cup makes a good team bad" is bunk.
To make a save on a breakaway requires luck, even as a favorite.
To win a game requires luck, even as the favorite.
To win a playoff series requires luck, even as a favorite.
To win the cup requires luck, even as a favorite.
The Jets team that played Dallas was almost exactly the same Jets team that played Nashville, just as surely as the same poker player who made his flush draw yesterday could be almost exactly the same player that missed one today. But variance was on our side against Nashville and it wasn't on our side against Dallas. Such is life in a non-deterministic event, even an athletic one.
Neither game we played was perfect. No NHL team plays a perfect game. The perfect game is a myth.
We did some things right in both games, things that can be built on.
We did some things wrong in both games, things that can be learned from.
Yesterday was a setback, not the End Times.
This team is still very good, and when the championship tournament runs around, we will be one of the top contenders.
Chances are high we won't win the Cup, as a function of the chances being high that ANY individual team won't win the Cup.
And we need to be at peace with why that is: because so much is beyond our control.
But if we can't be at peace with the fact that so much is beyond our control in ONE game, how will we come to peace with the fact that so much will be beyond our control in the most gruelling tournament in sports?
.. but trust me about the sunscreen.
Wait,Yeah it seems like the few games the Jets lose are the statement games.
I thought it was obvious that I was jokingWait,
So the statement games are not the Lightning and Preds games?
OK.

Needed a couple more periods to convey the sarcasm .I thought it was obvious that I was joking
Sorry - that's what happens when you hop in and out like I doI thought it was obvious that I was joking
Probably the post of the year
Hmmm... Jets beat Vegas and Nashville and lose to the Stars. I'll take that at the end of a 9 in 16 stretch with a couple of elite players out.I agree with you on most things Ducky10 but I disagree that this is the most half empty glass post. I just think the Jets could have made a statement with that game against Dallas. Why give the Stars confidence that they can beat them. That's 2 out of 3 games so far this season.
In regards to Calgary and Tampa Bay, the Flames could have taken the night off against the Oilers and the Lightning could have done the same against the Sharks but instead they both had convincing wins. Both of them knew the All-star break was coming up and could have mailed it in like the Jets did. I'm not sure why excuses always have to be made for the Jets in these situations.
I do agree with you about heading into the break winning 4 of 5 as that is a good thing. It just would have been nice if the 4th was the last one against Dallas that's all.

Yup I heard that all the time about the Jets here in Vancouver.Just got back from Denver and watched the game at a sports bar , the people there thought the refing was bad as well . The Jets didn't show up until the 3rd period and that's why we lost , still i'm pretty happy how we are playing especially without Buff and Ehlers in the lineup . Just a side note , the people we were talking to at the pub were all talking very highly about the Jets and would love if their Avalanche could one day be as good , outside perspectives can be really good to listen to , especially when they are the same as mine .
