Weird rebuttal. Wings just had a coaching change since then are the hottest team in the entire NHL.

Yzerman fixed two issues:
- Traded away cancer (Walman) while not losing a pick - freebie/throw in from upgrading to a better prospect trade.
- Hired a great coach (TM most likely wins coach of the year if DRWs make the playoffs)
That's just delusional. They were the hottest team for a hot minute, but have since come down to earth and the standings reflect that. On top of that, just because the pick was gained from another trade, one where both teams believed to be upgrading their prospect, doesn't mean that the very same pick wasn't lost in moving Wallman.

There is absolutely nothing that refutes that Yzerman paid to get rid of the guy that just netted a first round pick for SJ. Even if Yzerman would've got rid of Wallman via waivers, that in itself would ALSO be bad considering the return now but at least that COULD be justified in that he had to get rid of him for uh...reasons.

And I'm saying this as a Detroit fan who's favorite player of all time is Yzerman.

Everyone was very confused why Detroit would pay a 2nd to dump him. They didn't even ask around the League, just quickly rushed into dumping him.
Yes very strange indeed. There were reports that most GMs didn't even know he was available and even anonymous quotes from GMs that they would have paid a good price to get him instead of taking him for free with a 2nd round pick to boot.

Holy cherry picking. Now look at their record since the coaching change after Christmas so you can get a real picture.

You are crazy if you think CBJ coach wins coach of the year after Todd Mclellan revives the team from the dead and brings them to the playoffs. Sure Evason will be an honorable mention, I'll give you that. What the DRWs have done since christmas break has been nothing short of amazing.
McLellan is an effing moron. Get ready for the team to collapse.

I know the Oilers are in win-now mode but the cupboard is going to be bare for a while.
I mean that's the whole point isn't it? Build around McDavid and Draisaitl as long as you can and then go back into a rebuild. They didn't give up any of their prospects this deadline that might actually help the team in the next 3 years.

Since Christmas, Detroit is 17-10. Columbus is 15-10. Montreal is 16-9. *shrug*

None of those are amazing.

Holy crap, a 1st? I remember at the start of the season when the Wings traded him WITH a 2nd and thinking I wished the Ducks had jumped on that opportunity to take that contract. But to think he returned a 1st, 2nd, + prospect? What a HUGE return! San Jose has been the best at obtaining picks during their rebuild and are doing a great job.

Yzerman must be shooting himself in the foot... but also, REALLY OILERS? Frederic + Walman is the strategy? What about goaltending?

I don't even care if that's objectively true; No team that lost 4 in a row can be considered "hottest in the nhl". Maybe "hottest garbage in the nhl"
still not even in a playoff spot. Brutal!

Somebody tell me how this is going to relate to my fantasy team. Should I just dump Walman now?

Walman can run a PP just as good as Bouchard, so whomever is cheaper to sign this summer I bet will be kept.
At least gives the Oilers options. Bouchard is a much better player but unbelievably awful without the puck in our end. Watch overtime last night.

Depending on what happens in the postseason, I'd wonder if the Oilers may balk at the (higher cap inflated) asking price and if they do, at least they have someone who can PP QB if Bouchard needs to be moved.

This could help our 2nd unit PP by the sounds of it.

Hopefully there is some potential for him to be even better surrounded by a better team

Understood, but if it's a difference of 10m per vs 6m per.

You go with Walman and get a few cheaper top 4 RHD guys.

I think you are under-rating Bouchard.

Dude broke a 40 year old playoff record for defensemen last year. And before you say McDrai, that 40 year old record was set by a guy playing with prime Gretzky and Messier (so yeah, of course it helps to have talent around you).

He also scored 6, very timely goals, including 3 GWG and had the biggest positive impact of either team in that Vancouver series.

I've always suspected that the Sharks getting Walman + 2nd (inexplicably good value for SJ) was somehow connected to the Sharks also picking up Goodrow from waivers (inexplicably bad value for SJ) related to (in effect) circumventing Goodrow's NTC. I don't quite see a connection between Yzerman, Drury, and Grier, but, I don't think Yzerman is stupid and one has to assume there is some extra info we are not privy too (be it Goodrow related or not).

Yzerman paid a 2nd to rid him out of the locker-room immediately. Something toxic happened and Yzerman had to cure the cancer, he paid a 2nd for the cure.

DRWs captain, Dylan Larkin, talked about this in an interview.
Yzerman traded him to the Sharks in June, there is no “locker room” during the offseason. The comment he made following the trade alluded to having some trades lined up that he needed the cap space to complete. I believe that Walman had created friction with DET due to being healthy scratched late in the season, but the trade timing and circumstances (e.g. not shopped, just hastily traded - even though other GM’s said they would have traded positive value for him if they knew he was available) don’t line up with it being purely due to locker room issues.

Timing ain’t weird at all.

And that 1st can be packaged up. Think different.

I think the timing is weird considering Walman's been the Sharks' best D man, is not impacting the tank this season, and is signed through next season at a fair price. You bring up a fair point with the packaging but again, I don't want this team to be in rebuild mode forever. Teams like the Oilers (of old) and the Blackhawks (of now) have highlighted the importance of insulating your young, franchise players with solid veterans and actually putting some wins together.
