If we want to get out of rebuilding mode, Walman can't be our #1. At that point, best case scenario is that he's a solid 2nd pairing guy with a year left. Is that guy worth passing up a late 1st round pick? This is when we will have decent odds of developing a 2nd pairing LHD in the next year or two. As for Walman's veteran status, yeah he's got a good chunk of NHL games to his credit but he's been in one playoff game. This chance for him in Edmonton is where he gets to show he knows how to contribute to a winning team. I think the team is fine with what they have to insulate the younger players. We picked up Desharnais who has about 50 less games than Walman did when he started here but with substantially more playoff experience. I don't think whatever losing happens between now and the end of the season will have some lasting impact on the young players. As bad as it may be, they're still trending towards being slightly better than last season while being much younger and with a lot more room to grow.
