Well maybe not Anaheim but Seattle sure will have better D than the Oilers
Maybe. Edmonton has the best dman overall on the two teams, by far, and the best offensive dman, by far.

Seattle’s defence is pretty low-event.

Really no idea what Edmonton is doing this offseason. First signing Hyman for 7 years at 5.5M(!!), and re-signing Barrie(good offence, terrible D), and Ceci(he's terrible in every way), and trading away Bear.

Geez.

It's kind of weird that the Oilers get a rep of having bad goaltending and D, for a long time now, and yet it has been at least average. I think this year will be no different and if anything the D will take a step forward due to the much improved forward depth. Ceci will be fine. It's not like he's the centerpiece of the D

I bet Bear turns into another Justin Faulk in Carolina. Not a star dman but a decent one over time. If he plays with Slavin, he will be able to carry Bears corpse and make him look like a legit top 4 dman.

I like the forwards Edmonton signed even if they overpaid Hyman.
On D they took a step back swapping Keith for Larsson.
But imo goaltending will be their Achilles heel. Banking on Smith to repeat last years performance and to stay healthy in a full season at his age seems like a poor gamble. And Koskinen is well below average by any metric.
So overall I see them at best as staying at the same level subject to the caveat that they could improve if they upgrade in net.

Seattle has Edmonton best defensive D man...a former norris winner and more capable D in their own zone. The very idea of us debating who between the Oilers and an expansion team tells us what's wrong here

It does? If you think that’s true, you’ve misunderstood the expansion draft rules, even after the fact.

Yes of course it does...your debating an embattled team in Edmonton containing the 2 best offensive players in world and their below average D core to a team that has yet to ooay a single NHL game and the worst part is the team from Seattle has a slightly better D core already. Better suited for defending

Exactly.

This is a worse D than those years that drafted Hall, RNH, and Yak. This is just epically bad D.

As a pens fan I disagree I think ceci plays great positional defense and he knows what he can do well at and trys his best to avoid the awkward bad situations.

Yea he was horrible on the first defensive pairing. Who would have thought that.

As a 5th defenseman this guy brings what you expect.

4 years for Ceci us just ridiculous especially since every penny needs to go to nurse. If Seth Jones and werenski get 9.5, nurse is gonna be a bank breaker too.

Right, whichever pairing he is on, will probably leak odd man scoring chances like a sieve. Barrie won't do much in his own zone either, probably would be like minis 50 or something over the season. Keith is done, mailed it in, he's just there to collect a check now. The you have Russel and the rookies. Seriously, has anyone ever seen rotten, decaying shack like the Oilers' D next year?

The opposition would probably have a high danger scoring chance every other shift. Goodness helps when Smith is in goal. The thought is almost comical.

I’ve seen worse, they are called the Buffalo Sabres.

We are bad for sure.

You know what's worse, being bad while hiding your head in the sand.

Thankfully, next year, we will only have the second worst D I. The league, maybe Anaheim the 3rd worst.

keep telling yourself that, doesn’t make it true though.

Edmonton next year basically will have 1 NHL caliber D on the team, and another forward floater that likes to play pretend by lining up as D. Everything else that belongs in Retirement village, the minors,, or in Europe.. Not exactly hard to beat.

Barrie was top of the league in points and put up more points than your top forward.

Your best floater, Jeff Skinner takes up 9M in cap hit and played in the 4th line at one point. Barrie is only half that.

Buffalo will still be a dumpster fire of an organization. Hopefully Eichel gets moved out quick so he doesn't have to endure more suffering there. Same with Dahlin.

He’s the definition of inconsistent. One game he looks like a legitimate second pair defensemen and the next he’s a livability who’s mind can’t keep up with the game. I wanted to like him during his tenure with the Leafs but at the end of the day the bad games outnumbered the good. He’s still a decent body given limited availability. That being said, I wouldn’t want him playing anything but bottom pairing/insurance in the event of an injury.
