How many superstars have we had that have stayed for their careers?
Just Nuge as our closest. It's a nice story. But nice stories don't field competitive rosters, cap management does. We're up against it now with very little relief from the hometown discounts we were always going to need to continue being a Cup contender.

Yes very tight. I might get skewered for this but I think that to make it work then Kane gets bought out and Jeff Skinner is replaced with a cheaper player.

Of course, if the cap is moving up to 92M then that makes it a lot easier. Its obviously tied to revenue projections but projections are just that- you can't put too much faith in them.

Can't buy out Kane, cannot have any more dead cap. Have to pay to get rid of Kane, I would suggest offloading him in a deal that brings back a D.

1 of Henrique or Kulak have to go next off-season too, if you sign Bouchard long term to like 11 per, maybe both of them have to go on *top* of Kane.

I listened to The Cult of Hockey podcast for like 10 minutes before Staples was whining about the Draisaitl contract saying it's like the Nurse contract in that.... and then I tuned out because there's no way you can justify that statement with any reasonable follow up to the beginning of that sentence.

I happen to think the number is a bit high but what exactly did these guys expect? Drai wasn't taking less than Matthews even though the terms didn't match up so it was never going to be less than $13.5m. Would that have been nice? Sure, but I doubt that .5m/yr cap savings even over 8 years is make or break for winning a Cup. The other alternative was trading him or letting him walk and magically finding a way to replace Leon Draisaitl not only on ice production but just his presence in general on and off the ice.

The reality is that the Oilers were always going to be in tough with the cap with these new superstar contracts especially in the early years of the contracts before the bigger cap rise, such is life when you have superstars. Thank Kenny Holland for the Nurse contract for creating this impending cap crunch.

A superstar for the first time in history choosing Edmonton for their entire career isn’t a huge win because of 500k? Please.

Well, we are a bit off topic here so I won't go on too long but its interesting how having 4 long term (assumed) very high priced contracts (Nurse, Bouchard, Mc-D, Drai) doesn't take too long before it has a profound impact on the rest of the lineup. Without a significant cap increase it becomes even more profound. This is not to say that there won't be significant cap increases but again, revenue projections are just that and nothing more.

If Bouchard wants $11M then that might be his exit point.

Does anyone even take Staples serious anymore?

I wonder if that idiot realizes that if we move on from draisaitl, we’re also moving on from McDavid.

A Hometown Discount would have been nice. Still a win, could have been a huger win. I stand by the statement. But yes, also nice to have a Superstar here for the long haul, maybe I'm getting greedy as the Decade of Darkness goes further away in our rear view mirror. But practically, we want a Cup and this is a competitive League, hard to do that without Cap.

It’s a good day. Hopefully draisaitl doesn’t regret signing for such an amount.

Hard to do it without cap, probably impossible to do it without Drai.

It would be 11 maybe more to get him long term. He'd be stupid to take an 8 year deal for only 750k more than Nurse (10).

The other recourse which is what I suspect will happen is Bouchard gets bridged 2 years in the 8.5 mill range and they kick the can down the road but then the price will likely be even higher for an 8 year deal.

So glad we got him signed and for that long, but certainly that is not exactly a team friendly contract. He deserves a huge raise and he certainly got one. I fully expect McDavid to get at least 16. With Bouch's coming up soon as well. we are going to desperately need some young players and UFA's to outproduce their contracts to have any chance at a cup or some cups. We've seen in the past how being top heavy with 2 or 3 guys and not much else can't get it done. That Nurse contract (and Campbell's to a lesser extent) is going to be the downfall if they can't do it. The margins and window is so tight now, that you can't have any mistakes or any passengers.

Guess my hometown discounts hope will lie with Bouch and McD. There's still hope.

Official. Nice

Thought he was going to Boston and I thought we wouldn’t be able to re-sign superstars here lol

Guess that means McD will probably re-sign as well
I knew he wasn’t going anywhere, despite what eastern conference fans were hoping would happen! Listening to some of the posts online over the years about how he (and Connor) “can’t wait” to leave Edmonton were absolutely laughable!!:laugh::laugh:
