Confirmed Signing with Link: [EDM] D John Klingberg signs with the Oilers (1 year, $1M prorated salary + $350k signing bonus)

Nice depth add, see if he has any game left after his hip resurfacing. If not, not much of a loss.

so 1 million;... very good signing. No issues with it.

350K bonus.. please tell me we're not paying that next year against the cap?

No, we have cap space right now. And if we send Josh Brown down (which we should) its essentially a wash.

I'm guessing the bonus is GP, so we'll see how that goes

Signing what is likely to be a league minimum contract for a depth puck moving defenceman who will play limited minutes is what sewers the Oilers this post season?
Don't expect high brow hockey analysis from the HF trolls

...so, if Kling proves he can still play at a level somewhat close to he did in Big D, the playoff picture might be:

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Klingberg
Kulak - Emberson/Stecher

...could be worse...

acting like we need him to carry 23+mins a night vs top line talent

his role is bottom pair playing vs depth, he's a better skater than majority of bottom pairing players in the league

And you know this how of a guy coming off a surgery known to impede players skating abilities?

By the sounds of local chatter the Oilers brass want to also add an "Ekholm" level D to the group this deadline as well. Klingberg likely the 6 or 7. Emberson will also certainly get minutes over Stetcher

I don’t see a way it works out, unless they expect to trade Emberson in whatever deal for a D is being discussed:

Ek-Bouch
Nurse-Mystery D
Kulak-Klingberg
Stecher

Otherwise we are keeping Klingberg around as a #7 and what Stan is paying for that privilege is way too much (especially with the bonus).

Exactly. Klingberg is just free depth on a cheap contract. And depth that could play on our PP2 if needed, or replace Bouchard if injuries happen. There's literally no risk to this.

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Deadline Pickup
Kulak - Emberson

Klingberg
Stecher

We’re talking about a guy who was paid over 11 million dollars over the last 2 years and who, despite the injury, managed 38 points over his last 81 games. He’s making barely above league minimum (so can be buried if it doesn’t pan out) and there’s a chance he could bounce back. Aside from people hate the Oilers, there’s no reason for this not being a great signing

This is either going to be great for the Oilers or extremely entertaining for everyone else. There is no in between.

Please, please put Klingberg together with Nurse. That needs to happen at least once.

What are you talking about?

Or he just doesn't play? Lol

Also you haven't watched much Nurse this year have you? Playing the best hockey of his career and some of the best advanced metrics of any D in the league with Kulak.

...is there even an "Ekholm-level" Dman out there on the block right now??...:dunno:
No. But there are 2nd pair defensemen out there, which is what we thought we were getting in Ekholm. I think expecting an Ekholm - a legitimate top pairing defenseman - is foolish. That's also why this move is a good move. It's a no risk trial on a guy who used to be a top pair defenseman.
