Confirmed Signing with Link: [EDM] D John Klingberg signs with the Oilers (1 year, $1M prorated salary + $350k signing bonus)

He will be sheltered because the entire team has total buy-in on a defensive system that proving extremely effective. Seriously the Oilers are making everyone on the team look great defensively. If Klingberg is physically able to fit in the system in terms of skating and able to fight for pucks, then he will be a success here
He doesn't fight for pucks, at least in the defensive zone. He is talented in the O zone, though. I mean, I've seen worse defenders, but not many.

At the price it's not a big deal, though.

Has Ryan been that bad this year? Seemed to always be a serviceable bottom 6 center.

He's been serviceable in spurts, and is still an absolute wizard in the faceoff dot; but his speed and strength are completely shot. It's been his hockey IQ carrying him, as he looks what you'd expect a 38 year old, 5'10 player with a bad back to look like.

If he got a month off and a chance to recover, I think you could squeeze a little more out of him. But the Oil have been running a bare-bones roster this season and he was forced to be an everyday player. Thus that gas tank is completely empty.

maybe outside of the Atlantic they would.

Edmonton faired exactly the same as toronto. It was errie.

Go down big to the Atlantic team. Force a game 7 then the stars choke.
No reason to believe Edmonton would win a round against the Atlantic teams of 2017-2024.

At least Toronto beat one. 1-7 ain’t that bad
This might be the dumbest thing I've read on this site

We are spending next to nothing for a productive experienced player. Awesome.

Now we need another bottom 6 center. Whatever else we add is just gravy.

Hyman and Barrie were better in Edmonton, the others neutral or better in Toronto tbh
Hyman was just as good in Toronto. The difference is that Edmonton's coaches saw the upside of giving him more minutes with star players.

When did Toronto "choke" in an SCF? Was this during the current century?

I don’t see much downside to this. You get a guy that is a 6/7 Dman but can play the Bouchard role if he ever goes down with injury. It’s at worst an insurance policy. At best, we see him regain some of his former ability as a result of the hip surgery. We have no idea how much it hindered his play. I’m not saying I expect 67 point Klingberg, but I don’t think he’ll be as bad as he was in Toronto either.

Will gladly take something in the middle of that.

the second Edmonton played an Atlantic team they became leafs west. Choked in game 7 against the first Atlantic opponent they face.

Which appears to be the goal based on their player acquisition

I'm asking how you made the connection between a team who got to game 7 of the SCF last year and Toronto. How are they equal again, in this millennium?

There is if they only focus on him. Is he an upgrade over anyone else we have?

Oilers keep hiring these brain dead dinosaur GMs .
Josh Brown, potentially Stetcher. Also obviously a better option if anybody gets banged up; the Oilers are in trouble if any of their D get hurt in the playoffs.

Still expecting them to get another D at the deadline anyways.

Surprised anyone gave him more than league min.

He's had two horrible years in a row, and he's coming off surgery where he hasn't played hockey for over a year.

This. Exactly this.

Klingberg doesn't have to play like he did 3-4 years ago. He just has to outplay Stecher and Brown. Brown should be an automatic waiver transaction shortly.

The Oilers are still likely to go after a 3-4 RHD.

Because they finally played the Atlantic and got Destroyed.
You can win as many as you want against the pacific. The second they played the best division from 2017-2024 they got destroyed

Finally saw what half of Canada has to put up with.

Ceci was better in Edmonton than in Toronto.

But I will give you that the #8 D-men, a.k.a as the others, were better in Toronto, but who cares....

They got "destroyed" losing by two goals in SCF Game 7? Is that the definition of destroyed now?

So what you're saying is no, the Leafs bowing out in the first two rounds (really the first minus one "good" year) is not the same as reaching the Finals. Gotcha.

And let me guess, your definition of Destroyed is "they outshot and outscored them", right?

Also, is there any reason to try to derail any thread towards how great are the leafs and their one series win in seven tries? What does this have to do with this signing?
