Confirmed Signing with Link: [EDM] D John Klingberg signs with the Oilers (1 year, $1M prorated salary + $350k signing bonus)

Well considering Ekholms name was nowhere close to being mentioned before we acquired him, I have no idea.
That’s not true. It was mentioned as early as November that year. Oilers nation had frank serivalli on discussing it a few weeks ago ( he appears every Wednesday on oilersnation) and they were specifically mentioning it during the unveiling of his trade target list.

You described everything , except hes a dman who cant play defensively
Have you seen the oilers defensive numbers? Among top of the league.

the old stereotype of the oilers doesn’t hold weight anymore. They aren’t a 1 line defensive black hole team. It’s not 2021 anymore.

Crying about contracts that can either be completely buried in the minors or buried with a slight penalty is comical.

Crawl back to HF Oil with all the other homers who are satisfied with the team finishing 2nd and squandering McDrai's peak.

Apparently a bunch of different teams showed interest. Including the Leafs, Senators, Stars, Avalanche.

One team's trash is another team's treasure. Unfortunately, he's trash to the Oilers and at this stage in his career the only advantage he brings over Stecher is his height.

We're hearing from basically everyone who has seen him play that the guy is a defensive sieve and another Jeff Skinner, and that's when he was healthy...so he's just costing money that can go to getting a better fit, such as Dumoulin.

It's funny because, despite our defense ranking so high and goaltending still ranking in the bottom half, the Oiler-friendly media seems to really be pushing that "goaltending is totally fine, nothing to see here folks..." I get that Stecher is small and weak, and Josh Brown is an ECHLer, so I agree that the Oilers need an upgrade there, but there isn't so much as a whisper that the team is looking for help in net. That concerns me.

My first reaction.. this is stupid.
My second reaction after seeing 1 mill cap hit... great signing low risk and nice move. Hope it works out, if not bury him. He'll be great in the 5/6/7 carrousel.
My third reaction after a day and reading a lot of articles and reports is this is stupid.

Here's why I don't like it.

it's being explained as a free asset and we all need to calm down. But the cap hit could be over 1.6 in one scenario (800 in another one). 1.6 is way too big a caphit for this. The second thing is that I'm reading a lot about how he will slot into the Top 4. This is not the guy we need in our Top 4 beside Nurse. That is a bad idea and not because of Nurse... Nurse has been awesome. This is nothing like the 2RD we need and what scares me is that this is what Bowman is thinking. Let's go to Valu Village and buy day old meat at a discount and pretend it's filet mignon.

So yeah, if this is a 1 mill cap hit to compete with Josh Brown - hat's off and great move. If this is because they are thinking 2RD and 20 TOI a night then I just don't see it working at all. I do see the argument for him though.. he's a great passer and, paired with Nurse, he will help our 5 on 5 game with high end passes to release our very good forward group. So both pairs have a passer and both pairs have a responsible D man. I get it and maybe it works but I don't like it one bit. I wanted something like a Larsson in our 2RD (yes, I know he won't play for us.. talking about a style of player). This is Nurse - Barrie all over again.

So now it's wait and see for me... where do they envision him because I think they think they solved the 2RD and are corking champagne bottles and I hope I'm dead wrong.lol Our solution to 2RD is a player in the NHL right now and not a guy sitting at home. But, maybe it works and I'm wrong (like I was about Podz).

There’s no intention of him being the solve for the 2d position.

My only concern now that’s he signed is why aren’t the type of organization that will bury a bad vet contract in the minors. At least we haven’t shown to be. So I think Klingberg is up with us until the end good of bad.

Ha. Nurse has been awesome this year and a huge reason why the dcore has been so good and what the Oilers are the best team in the league since Nov.

If you don't think so...go watch last nites game. He was a monster defensively
Some guys new years resolutions were to be even more full of shit in 2025. Doing well 18 days in.

I hope you're right but a lot of the articles and tweets I'm seeing from Oiler Media (not my fav media.lol) seem to be thinking he's a tall, smooth skating 2RD to help out our offence. Time will tell. I have all day for him beating out Josh Brown at 800k. That is brilliant.

That's not completely true. They aren't putting all their eggs in this basket but they are certainly intending him to be Nurse's partner if all goes to plan. Its a low risk move that may or may not work.

This could be decent, or downright disastrous for the Oil. Klingberg is a BAD defender... one of the absolute worst defenders in the NHL per minute played. He can maybe provide an offensive spark in a sheltered role, but IMO the Oil actually overpaid here and might have tied their hands to actually get a real improvement on D at the deadline.

If anyone, the organization including thinks that Klingberg and 32 year old who hasn’t played in 2 years will take the 2d spot… they are mistaken. Like you said, he’s a josh brown replacement.

No risk signing. He's coming in to upgrade the 6/7D position, meaning his competition is Josh Brown, and Troy Stecher. He will be paired with either Kulak, or Emberson, depending on his quality. If he looks unreal, then maybe he gets paired with Nurse, but that will only happen if he looks great.

His contract is fully buriable, so there's no risk.

he'll be fine man you're over-analyzing, if we acquired the same talent on deadline day for a 3rd and had some NPC name like Jack Barbosa to help with depth RD, you'd be head over heels.

the only risk with this signing is his health and helping him return to form which we have plenty of runway to do

If he can't play, he's gone. This is the same team healthy scratching a player they gave a full NMC too. If Skinner had no trade protection he would have likely been moved out already.

Disatrous is huge hyperbole.

If he sucks, his contract is 95% buriable while not in LTIR and they can just send him the other way in the eventual trade for a defenseman if they don't want to bury him.

As long as his skating looks good after the surgery this should be a solid pick up. He was still a 0.5ppg dman as recent as 2022-23. Oilers needed another puck moving D to push Stetcher to 7D where he's better fit as a competent injury fill in. This is a no risk move and gives the Oil 6 weeks to evaluate if he's a solution at 4D and if not he could be a very good depth option and they trade for one.

At worst he is organizational depth improvement over Josh Brown. His contract doesn't tie their hands to do anything.
